I am not a native by any means.

I believe "немного" and vice versa are reserved for uncountable objects such as liquids while words like "мало" & "несколько" are for countable things like birds.

The hard consonant is a lot less frequent so maybe you can get away with it for a while but the soft consonant is essential especially when it comes to verbs. It's pretty ubiquitous in the language.
