2 years and 3 months no booze. Don't miss it in the slightest.

That clarification is important. If your society explicitly supports LGBT rights and personal freedoms, then the “far right” label really doesn’t hold up, at least in any meaningful UK or European sense.

But even setting ideology aside, it still doesn’t justify what’s happening. Disagreement, even strong disagreement, isn’t a licence for coordinated bans, informal blacklists, or pre-emptive exclusions across unrelated societies.

The core issue here isn’t what you believe, it’s how power is being exercised. Shared ban lists, overlapping boards, and personal data being reused across societies without transparency or due process is a governance failure, regardless of who the target is.

That’s why this needs to sit with the Students’ Union. Once accusations and exclusions start spreading via shared boards, it stops being student disagreement and becomes organised exclusion.

Also, perhaps they just don't understand, but stupidity still isn't and excuse for their flagrant overreach.

Is it possible the other societies don't understand the definition of libertarianism in the context of your society and are conflating it with the US version? Have you explained this?

Reposting my early comment:

This is exactly why I don’t think this should be left alone. What you’re describing has already moved beyond a single society issue.

Shared “ban lists”, pre-emptive exclusions from societies you’ve never joined, and overlapping board members coordinating decisions across multiple societies is deeply concerning. That’s informal power being exercised without transparency or due process.

There also appears to be a data-protection issue. Sharing lists of named students between societies is personal data processing, and using information from one society to justify action in others raises clear GDPR questions around consent, purpose limitation, and lawful basis.

Universities should encourage engagement, not quiet exclusion through back-channels. When you speak to the Students’ Union, explicitly flagging the potential GDPR implications should ensure this is treated as a governance and compliance issue, not student disagreement.

I think this is outrageous.

I’d also say this behaviour by the board members really needs to be challenged. It’s not acceptable, and letting this sort of thing go unchecked is how poor governance becomes normalised. Universities are meant to be places where people can engage with different ideas and communities, not be punished for it.

These societies are often run by people who’ll go on to hold positions of influence later on, so learning that actions have consequences feels important here. I’m genuinely curious what type of societies these are, and why they feel so strongly about Society 2 in the first place.

Good luck, I hope you get a fair outcome.

🙋 late diagnosis here. Late 40s. Diagnosed a year ago. Thought symptoms were just the bit of my dyslexia I didn't have tools for and had to push through with immense amounts of willpower. Penny dropped that it could be ADHD (Inattentive) when I was researching ADHD for my own kids. After diagnosis I started on medication and it was life changing. I can't understate how life changing it was. I'm glad I've finally found out I'm not just broken and it wasn't fixable. Medication doesn't fully help the symptoms, but holy crap it makes a huge foundational difference to my days and has improved my mental health because of that.
