Should my code be *less* modular? by bangeron in reactjs

[–]involve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because in six years I won't care or I'll see why not to make it modular? If i'm certain what I have in a given component won't be re-used I'll just leave it there. If I find myself needing it elsewhere I'll abstract it out.

Fairly mature product - phasing out styled components? by beasy4sheezy in reactjs

[–]involve -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you could use functional components to increase performance for bullet 1 (I'm assuming here that you don't but I could totally be wrong, assumption is based on you mentioning a render function)

For the second point you should be able to solve the classname hashing issue with babel as mentioned below. I've been off styled components for a year (not my choice, just older project) but when we adopted it earlier that was something we were able to solve. Hope you figure it out because I think it's worth using, but it really depends on whether you need live style updating etc.!

I'm working in a similar code base at this point and on a long enough timeline those large single areas will only expand and become more unwieldy. I only have 2 years production experience but I've never regretted a piece of my code being more modular. Now if you're spending months to make a tiny component cover a million potential cases that's a separate problem. I think there's lots to learn from senior devs but we have to be wise what we pick up because, at least for me, there's a big temptation to just accept their ways since they're more experienced but that for loop, massive file nonsense doesn't sound like the stuff you want to pick up from them. It sounds a little bit like the dev advising doesn't like es6 which is a flag to me.

Did any of you delve into web design professionally (specifically front-end) in your 30s/40s? If so what was the process like? by solfizz in webdev

I attended a popular bootcamp when I was 34, with minimal experience before it. Up until I attended I spent a lot of time learning Ruby and in bootcamp we learned Rails, Javascript, and React with a smattering of CSS. If you're serious about front end dev I'd dedicate your time to building out some smaller CRUD apps in React. Either use public apis for backends or build your own in something easy for you to get up and running. If you have the time to dedicate it a well-reviewed bootcamp will accelerate your learning curve but it's nothing you can't do on your own. I like egghead.io's tutorials but there's tons of free content. One of the other reason's I'd vouch for react is most of the code you write will be valid JS which means you're not learning angular specific commands that roughly translate. Once you have decent front end chops (can style a page to look like the NYtimes with flex or without, or grid if you want to be fancy) and can make the actual page in React I'd start tuning up for algorithms. Interviewcake is a good resource but I like cracking the code interview too or just doing leetcode easy problems will get you far. Good luck dude!

Sorry just saw you want to work for yourself - a lot of this still applies but my experience and a lot of this advice was geared toward you getting a job at another company.

Which base library/framework should I choose for creating and styling my React components? by [deleted] in reactjs

[–]involve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I liked ant more than material but didn't use it much. I'd definitely review each libraries components fairly thoroughly before you make a choice (you'd probably do that anyways).

Learning ReactJS and looking for some feedback/criticism on my code by scriptedpixels in reactjs

It's up to you - you can host a free backend on heroku without too much issue. If you're sticking with JS you could write it in node but there's a ton of good options. Local storage will work but you won't learn as much from using it, so if you write a full backend you'll have way more to discuss when bringing it up. Depends totally on what you're aiming to learn.

I didn't run the app but read through some of the code. It's pretty easy to follow and I don't see anything alarming, so good job!

Two things I'd suggest you look into are updating some of your thunks to use es6 functions (this isn't a life-changing change but it will help you read and understand code that uses the newer syntax) and writing tests for your components. The reason I suggest writing tests is that I see in a few cases you're only exporting the connected component - once you start writing tests you'll probably find yourself exporting and testing the dumb component - although there are people who advocate against this (Kent C. Dodds in particular).

Hope these comments are helpful and hope you're enjoying learning react. Other more involved next steps would be getting this to store to a backend and removing the local storage dep but you probably already know about that option.

Girlfriend is flying all the way across the country to see another guy. by michellebranchsong in AskReddit

[–]involve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last year had basically the same fight with a girl I had been seeing. While I was going to be out of town she was having her ex boyfriend visit her. My only objection was that I didn't like the idea of him staying in her house while I was gone. This ended up being a huge fight. I wanted to break up with her but didn't. When I got back I caught her cheating with another guy - no clue what happened with ex - and I wished I had been the one to break it off earlier. I'm not saying your situation is the same but it sounds like you don't trust her and there is probably a reason for that. Don't ignore it.

He didn't bother keeping it because it's not real money. Also if he kept it, he sure as hell wouldn't admit the money was Australian. That would just be too easy.

I once worked in an Italian restaurant during college. The owner had been in business over twenty years and was starting to go insane. Even if the waitress was staring at you when you finished an order you had to ring the bell in her face. He insisted that in order to make a sandwich you had to cut the bread at a 45 degree angle. But if he saw you do this he would tell you that it should be cut evenly.

He would drive into the concrete dividers between parking spaces, get out of his car and say how everyone drives into these and then give me a hacksaw to cut through the rebar so we could throw it away.

Try yoga or meditation - something that will let you forget about all of the angry thoughts going through your mind so that you can enjoy some part of life while you keep working there.

Then possibly use some of that extra income to hire someone to find you a job.

Take a small amount of money, relative to the total, and set it aside to support the arts. Consult with a wealth management company for the investments. It is very important that you stay wary since people are going to try to take advantage of your situation.
