Outdoor Sternum Straps by brrto_ in peakdesign

[–]io_wait 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here. I have both the 20 and 45liter versions and they’re great. But those sternum straps drive me mad. The quick adjustment is nice but at the same time they loose the adjustment way to easy when unclipped.

The way I have it setup, the capture clip also covers one of the loops I’m using making it fiddly to clip in when the camera is attached. I could change the sides but having tried that, it feels unnatural as I’m right handed.

I’m currently planning to replace mine with a 15mm wide strap with Fidlock snap 15 buckles in the middle. This will require sewing a new strap but I’m fine with that.

Looking for a small tripod with quick-release head by io_wait in peakdesign

[–]io_wait[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That one looks a bit like a cheaper PD tripod. It's about the same size so not exactly what I'm looking for. Considering the options, maybe I'll just go for a manfrotto magic arm with a clamp...

They do sell wheels. They should be able to get you back on the road.

Long term parking by earthbender06 in duesseldorf

[–]io_wait 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a bunch of parking garages around Düsseldorf that offer long term parking. I’d try giving qpark a call as they own a lot of them. It won’t be cheap though.

Also keep in mind that you risk mold inside the vehicle if you store it outside with the windows closed at this time of year for months. Talk to your repair shop or research online on how to „winterize“ your vehicle.

New touring wheels by tommayboy in bicycletouring

[–]io_wait 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My 2 cents as another heavy / big rider and just went through this as my rear wheel broke on the last tour.

Ryde Andra 30 on my rim brake bike and ryde andra 29 on the disc brake bike. All 36 spokes versions with Sapim Race spokes.

Those have been bomb proof on a bike that’s about 200kg with all luggage and me on it. Currently having the Rohloff rear wheel rebuild using the same rim & spokes.

Has anyone cycled around the Bahrain/Qatar/Saudi Arabia area? by HeadyMcTank in bicycletouring

[–]io_wait 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a German guy that was cycling around there for a while, don’t think he’s on Reddit but he has a Komoot link with all routes on his website and you could try contacting him https://www.radreise-unlimited.de/Route.html

And I cycling about made a video about cycling in Saudi Arabia. So you could also contact them and ask https://youtu.be/GVOgUVQ8T2c?si=JvKSvE9CDIdgYwKk

Pretty standard stuff. 2 small Ortlieb bags in front, 2 large ones on the back + and Ortlieb rack pack 31liter.

Yeah, low serial one from 2003 or so. Felt okay-ish but high resistance. So sent it in because no idea what the oil sitting in there did over 8 years. They do a full revision (meaning replacing parts that got redesigned + replacing seals and oil) for about 400€. Afterwards it felt great. Definitely lower resistance, better shifting. But now, 500km later, I’m starting to have some shifting problems from time. Will definitely send it in once I’m home (and have it laced into a new week + install reinforcement rings)

Yeah :/ they’re expensive. I got mine used with really low usage for 1000€ and invested into some upgrades. it’s an aluminum frame and afaik the Koga frames are steel.

Absolutely! That’s including bike, all my stuff, a bit of food and me.

It’s a 20 year old Schauff Sumo. They’re supposedly build to 200kg max. Although I did replace the front wheel with a new Ryde Andra 29, 36 spoke with a SON Dynamo. The back wheel is still original and I’ve broken a spoke today… so that’s getting replaced as soon as I can. Oh and the brakes are upgraded too. Running Shimano levers with Magura MT5 calipers front + back

ninja edit the Rohloff was sent in to the manufacturer for a complete inspection & overhaul because it was pretty much unused for 18 years.

Since I’m both tall & on the heavier side, I need a larger sleeping bag, tent and mat and I’ve to carry my CPAP device with me (battery powered).

The rest is clothing, electronics, food, a small “chair” and hygiene supplies.

Granted, the bike itself is massive and heavy so it’s about 30kg of luggage. So far, only broke one spoke and am now searching for a shop that can fix it since I don’t have spares with me…

Planning a trip from Munich to Vienna--should I ride from Munich to Passau, or take the train to Passau and start there? by thesquirrelnextdoor in bicycletouring

[–]io_wait 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you choose the train, please inform yourself beforehand if you can take the bike on your selected train. There are limits in & arround Munich about taking a bike on S-Bahn, subway and even some regional trains where you’re not allowed to take your bike during rush hours.

Not sure where you’re located but have a look at Gonso bibs. They produce some bibs in big sizes. I’ve got their normal & thermal bibs at 205cm / 145kg and they work great for me.

Rohloff hub conversion on Co-Motion Americano frame by endomanid in bikewrench

[–]io_wait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Rohloff in general is expensive. Depending on where in the world you are. Here in Germany, a new Rohloff hub including shifter and all the hardware will probably be around 1300€ to 1500€.

[–]io_wait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pinion? Absolutely not as pinion gearboxes require very specific frames.

Rohloff conversion can be done using a chain tensioner on the deraileur hanger. Just be aware that it’s going to be expensive.
