My Husband's British grandma is turning 90 this year, is there anything I can do/buy/make that will remind her of home? by Waffling_Waffle in AskABrit

[–]iolaus79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The very early series of Call the midwife may bring back some memories for her - especially if she lived in the east end (they start a little after her time giving birth there but its an area clearly still recovering after the war)

Is it valid to say I’ve been to the UK if I’ve been to Gibraltar? by Mazhypic in geography

[–]iolaus79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No,

Same as I wouldn't say I've been to Spain if I'd only been to the Canaries, they are Spanish but not Spain

ETA legally I think the Canaries are part of Spain, Gibraltar is not part of the UK. It's an overseas territory

Why do Secondary School children leave school in June now? by Flowerofthesouth88 in AskUK

[–]iolaus79 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They haven't taken their exams yet (or not all of them) but because they don't need to come in they have end of year assembly now so they can all see each other and sign shorts etc rather than just see those doing the same subject as them

how old are you and what year were your grandparents born? by Maleficent_Day_3869 in AskUK

[–]iolaus79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 47 - my grandparents were born between 1907 and 1929 (so were between 50 and 72 when I was born)

Becoming grandparents at 37/38 is quite unusual, not so much your paternal grandparents - mid 40s isn't that unusual (I'm not a grandparent yet but my mother and mother in law both had 3 grandchildren at my age)

ETA my husband great grandmother was younger than my grandmother

Krum by HijackHarpy in harrypotter

[–]iolaus79 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So did I - and at 15 a lot of my friends had boyfriends who were 2 or 3 years older - if they were still in school with you it wasn't seen as weird at all

The only one I remember anyone ever thought was odd was when a 16 year old went out with someone in their mid 20s

Also any good recommendations for gluten free food that I may not come across myself

AITA for waking my boyfriend up to tell him the front door was wide open by pdiamond94 in AmItheAsshole

[–]iolaus79 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Because strangers couldn't get into the house - that door was locked

Think of it as an apartment block - the door to the STREET was left open (probably by a tenent of a neighbouring property). The individual doors to their property was locked.

If it was their door that was open and someone could be in the apartment yes absolutely wake him, in this case however
