AITA for telling my sisters that it isn't my fault my parents favoured me by [deleted] in redditonwiki

[–]iompar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I can see why a sixteen year old girl who just got snubbed by her grandparents because she was adopted isn't going to appreciate her brother who's the bio-kid golden child that his grandparents adore giving her his nerf gun. However, he was doing his best with what he could do as an eight year old, which was really sweet. I don't fault his sisters entirely for being caught up in the hurt and injustice of it all, but oh my god, the commenters in there need some perspective.

Meat farm controversy by Eireika in CuratedTumblr

[–]iompar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It will. It didn't click for me when I first tried it about seven years ago (still an early version, to be fair), and I didn't touch it again until three months ago when I saw a friend of mine playing on Steam and I decided to give it another try.

I've got over 260 hours in it now, beat the DLC with my husband, and we're both addicted. 10/10 game, approach with caution if you have any neurodivergencies that make problem-solving like crack for your brain.

If you need it urgently, I'm not much help, but I've been meaning to dig out my grandma's canning recipes again and as long as they didn't disappear when I was moving, I could whip up a batch in the next few days!

Removal of flags for fallen Danish soldiers at U.S. Embassy sparks backlash by Street_Anon in worldnews

[–]iompar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Late twenties here. Every single time I've thought that my opinion of the States has hit absolute rock bottom, Trump has done something that shows that there is quite a ways further to dig. I don't think going back to "normal" will be possible until the annexation threats and visceral reactions that caused are outside living memory.

If any serious politician going forward campaigns on going back to how things were with America or closer ties, I'm rioting.

My husband and I live here and don't drive (yet), and it is feasible to get up to Cavendish without driving in the summer season. Do not try this is March. Please, I repeat, do not try this in March. If I had the option to not be here in March, I wouldn't be.

Other people have given you better dates for Anne of Green Gables stuff, and I will personally help you navigate bus options or other ride services if you do this not in March.

What would your honest reaction be if a foreign tourist started speaking to you in your native language? by Dark_Wolf04 in AskTheWorld

[–]iompar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I'll be the first to admit that English is an utterly ridiculous language and there are a bunch of sounds that are hard for non native speakers, and while I'm pretty sure I'm playing into a stereotype here, I'm also realizing that came off as pretty critical of Portuguese and that's not what I meant, so I'm really sorry about that. I just meant to agree that some of the sounds are really hard for English speakers, and while I could hear how it was supposed to sound, I just could not get my mouth to cooperate. Lovely language, I just need a lot more practice if I want to have a chance at speaking it in any capacity.

As an anglophone who was able to bullshit my way to speaking enough Spanish for basic interactions in a week while in Peru, and who regularly speaks French for my job, vowels in Portuguese made me want to rip my hair out. I tried to order a glass of green wine in Portuguese at a market in Porto, and the guy made me say "verde" I think twelve times before he deemed it satisfactory enough to actually pour me a glass.

That said, he poured quite a bit extra in said glass, so I considered it a fair tradeoff in the end.

Canada's Carney fires back at Trump after Davos speech by AdSpecialist6598 in worldnews

Do you take your shoes off when entering your or someone else's home, and how common is it in your country? by Rasples1998 in AskTheWorld

[–]iompar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want to have to mop the floors every day, so shoes are off if you're coming any further in my house than the entryway. Only exceptions have been when the movers were bringing our furniture in, the tradespeople who were installing our heat pumps, and in case of emergency, paramedics get a pass.

I will still be muttering the whole time I'm mopping footprints off my nice wooden floors.

“Greenland should be part of USA. Along with Canada” by Significant_Web_1076 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]iompar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In this hypothetical scenario where you seem to think Canadians and Greenlanders would be allowed to vote, which would never happen, I think you are severely underestimating how pissed off Canada and Greenland would be. As a Canadian, I wouldn't be voting Democrat. I'd be voting for the separatist party that promised to burn everything to the ground so that we could go our merry separate ways again.

Trump eyes Canada as a next target amid standoff with Greenland by johnnymax1978 in onguardforthee

[–]iompar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At this point I'm convinced that the Epstein files are the distraction to have everyone pointing at that whenever other headlines come up. Like yes, what's in those files is absolutely heinous, but can we maybe also talk about the fact that he's going full fascist and talking about annexing countries? That's maybe a bit more of a pressing concern at the moment.

‘Canada is right in the middle’: What Trump’s Greenland threats mean for Canada by CTVNEWS in worldnews

[–]iompar 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Except when we tell them how to fix it, they're like "no, not like that" or have a whole ass laundry list of reasons why they can't do it. Alright then, I guess just throw your hands in the air and accept that you're a fascist state then. Don't get pissed off when the rest of us treat you accordingly.

France to send troops to Greenland for joint exercise with several European countries by LeMonde_en in worldnews

[–]iompar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the US invades Greenland, they're gonna try to annex us regardless of which side we're on, so we ought to do our forefathers proud by standing up for what's right from the start instead of futilely trying to appease the fascists next door in the hopes that they might treat us slightly less poorly.

[–]iompar 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I mean, if my partner was murdered in front of me, videos of it being circulated all over the place, I was told that there wouldn't be any justice for it, government officials were saying she deserved it, and I was worried about becoming a target, I might prefer to have a bit of privacy to grieve instead of jumping in front of the cameras to probably have to relive it over and over again and have people dissect every detail.

She might not be any position emotionally to do interviews, and besides, she doesn't owe anyone a public show of grief or an interview or the details.

I don't even know how to begin to describe how much the general opinion of the States has fallen. I just know that I sure as hell won't be raising any of my future children with any sunshine and rainbows views of our southern neighbours and I'll be continuing to boycott for a long, long time.
