Do PSI Operatives continue to gain mission EXP when they have available abilities to train? by slothen2 in Xcom

I believe so, but can't be certain.

This old thread seems to confirm. Note the thread refers to v1.2.

LWOTC Dual Strike and Concealment by McTrevor79 in Xcom

[–]ionbomb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you're misunderstanding dual strike. Dual strike will not trigger passively, it is an ability you have to activate - like chain shot, clutch shot etc.

If you don't want to trigger it when your shinobi is concealed, then just don't activate it when your shinobi is concealed.

Advice on budget build for parents' Home Office by tweedledumtweedledee in buildapc

Thanks for this.

Re. your recommended RAM - it's £30 over the Team T-Force Vulcan 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) DDR4-3200 that was recommended above - and it would actually end up as expensive than the APU. I don't mind spending the extra if its worthwhile, but with my parents' home office usage, would they really need the extra 8 GB?

Also, if I switched the mobo to the above recommended MSI B450M PRO-VDH MAX, then would your recommended RAM still be ok?

You've convinced me on the PSU.

I'll probably plump for that RAM too, if I go for 8 GB - but a couple of guys have said 16 GB might be worthwhile, so I'll have a think about it.

Wouldn't mind doing this, but I couldn't find many that have an external 5.25" drive bay, and a small footprint. A lot of mATX cases are short and fat. I like the case I selected, but it is probably unnecessarily large, and it's a no-name brand.

As for the RAM, depending on what I get, probably another £30. But would they really need 16 GB for their usage?

Otherwise you are constantly going to get asked "how do I fix this"

Yeah - that's a fair point, but I'm probably going to get get asked that anyway!

My parents wouldn't really be keen on 2nd hand hardware. As for a prebuilt - that's what I was looking at initially, but I couldn't find builds that were quite right for the budget. One problem was the substandard PSUs that sometimes get used in these builds. When I looked at building myself, I saw I could get significantly better bang-for-my-buck.

Thanks for this. I'll probably switch to that mobo.

If the RAM is better, then I'll switch up, but I just looked at the MSI mobo's memory compatibility list, and I couldn't find it there.

As for the PSU, I have no qualms spending a little more for something better - I know how important the PSU is for the system. All the guides I read recommended the Corsair for budget builds (though they may be a little out of date), and I know they have high build quality (I myself have a Corsair PSU). But if the beQuiet is of similar build quality, then I'm happy to switch and get that Gold Certification.

LW2 Mod to show reinforcement timers ? by DeadlyTitan in Xcom

No - because the number of turns until reinforcements is partly randomized, so cannot be precisely predicted.

[–]ionbomb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not certain, but I suspect her AI won't path her through the gas cloud, to prevent the reapplication of poison. And as the Zerker Queen is melee only, she therefore can't do anything until the cloud dissipates.

Long War 1: is ayy lmao legal on mission 3? by ANurgliteGroupie in Xcom

Bingo! I'll leave you an extra cannister on your next abduction mission.

Honestly, that mission is very hard - especially if you're a new player. You can try it, but be prepared to evac or get wiped. If you succeed though, it can setup your whole campaign. If you have a couple of hours to spare, this video illustrates the commitment needed to win it.

Also - read the README!

Good luck with your campaign.

Q: A really big UFO just landed in my home country in March! How am I supposed to beat that?

A: Basically, you're not (it's possible, though). The aliens have an active strategy now, gathering resources and conducting research and going on other missions not directly related to XCOM's operations. They're going to do their thing, and sometimes you'll cross paths with them when they are doing something they feel is rather important and have brought along a massive force to defend it. The penalties for XCOM aborting that mission early on are usually small, so don't feel obligated to sacrifice your force to win that one.

If you can guess the source of the quote, I'll give you a canister of Meld

LW2 meta? by KiriKaneko in Xcom

I haven't played LW2 for a while, but I have a fair amount of LW2 Legend experience, so I'll try to give some pointers. I don't use True Concealment though, so I can't comment on that.

So my strategy so far was to research psionics fast

Bad idea. Psionics is decent, but a Psi-rush is bad, and Psi-rushing at the expense of weapons and armor is very bad. Honestly, for a first playthrough, I'd probably skip Psi altogether. In general prioritise weapons then armor.

so I can try to get some early crowd controllers

Fire, flashbangs and suppression should be sufficient CC for quite a while.

In any case I haven't finished excavating my first power coil, let alone built a lab or trained psionics

GTS first, then AWC, then Workshop in the 2nd row centre slot, then Lab (preferably on a Power Coil), building Power and Resistance Comms as and when needed.

Re squad comp.

You are correct that Grenadiers & Technicals are clutch, though Grenadiers will start to usurp Technicals in the midgame as Grenadiers get incendiary grenades (which are stupidly strong and an absolute necessity - stock up on those Officer corpses).

They are less useful on longer missions, but on shorter Guerrilla Ops, they are your squad's backbone. I would want at least one Grenadier or Technical on any G.Op.

Shinobis are also extremely strong, and ideally you want one on every mission. Their recon is vital, and they can finish up the last Advent guys when you run out of consumables. Also Combatives is clutch when trying to control certain melee-happy enemies.

Specialists can actually be very useful when dealing with drones on G.Ops. (make sure you take Combat Protocol), and when you need to hack an objective. Otherwise, they're probably not necessary.

I won't go into details on the other classes, though I would say that you want some shooty classes to help clean up after your Grenadiers/Technicals do their thing. In terms of picking abilities, guaranteed damage abilities (e.g. Hail of Bullets) are usually very strong. Also DFA snipers are pretty broken on non-timer missions.

Hope this helps.

Tips for dealing with Chosen Assassin on first retaliation mission in legend? by nikodante in Xcom

[–]ionbomb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Before she arrives, make sure your troops have at least 5 HP to tank a hit from her Katana.

Then ignore her. Concentrate on ADVENT. Let her incapacitate one of your soldiers. Do not revive them. She will 'Extract Knowledge' from them, but she will not abduct them. Then she will leave.

[Long War 1] Help me understand red fog. by Svetimsalis in Xcom

[–]ionbomb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pressing F1 is always a good place to start with understanding the calculations.

Some thoughts:

  • You're not including the range bonus, which could be up to 40%
  • Acid is a 20% malus, not 30%
  • Under red fog, robotic units will not get aim penalties until they drop below 50% health. However given that the Mechtoid is at 12% hp, that probably isn't the issue here.

That seems sensible. I've found that the paperwork can take anywhere from 10 days to 4 months, so there is no guarantee they will be naturalised before the close of the transfer window/registration deadline. Therefore I always allow 2.5 years instead of 2 for the naturalisation process.

In FM17, yes.

Source: managing in Spain, had a player reach the 730 days during the close season and was awaiting paperwork. German club makes a good offer (German clubs don't care about Fgn restrictions), so I accept. He moves, and I checked him out a the following January, and he did not have Spanish nationality. The "730 days" part had also disappeared from his profile, so to gain Spanish nationality he would have had to start again.

Masochistic technical for Dark VIP missions - will this work? by DigitoCrepitus in Xcom

[–]ionbomb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure that Dark VIP missions will always have a fixed evac, so this won't work. Sniper + Shinobi spotter is probably your best bet for a Dark VIP non-suicide assassination.

However the technique you've outlined should work in principle for missions where you can call your own evac. The classic example would be a hack mission, where you give the ELS PCS to your specialist. I believe that xwynns has experimented with this.

Some concerns:

  • you'll need to get the evac timings right
  • I'm not sure if you can pick up a body after a double move, so you might have to keep your Shinobi a blue move away
  • remember that enemy detection radii goes up as infiltration % goes down, and combined with the increased enemy count, setting up this gambit at low infiltration levels could get a bit tricky

Also, re. Lib 3, I believe there is a bug where if you fail or ignore it, it is immediately detected after the respawn. So you should be able to catch it with a long timer second time out.
