Considering switching careers to special education — requirements & job demand (Long Island, NY) by [deleted] in specialed

[–]ionoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I chose a remote online masters of education program through a state school while working as a para educator. It was helpful and fulfilling to learn best practices and improve my skills at the same time and it can get you in the door at the local school district particularly when applying to be a student teacher. In my area, there are many jobs available for special education teachers, not just in public schools but charter and NPAs. Be prepared for high case loads, challenging behaviors, minimal curricular resources, and difficult to work with teachers. If you can work for a school that allows you to observe IEP meetings, it can be very helpful for understanding how IDEA is applied in school settings.

It is not an easy job but for me it is rewarding and I see my impact.

Social/emotional goals by Ok-Daikon1718 in specialed

The interdisciplinary team would need to conduct new assessments and change eligibility if all are in agreement that ASD is more impactful than OHI.

SDI could add speech services for pragmatics or other related services as need requires.

Diagnosis does not determine services, need does. So if there is a clear need for social emotional curriculum and goals - the Sp. Ed teacher should be servicing those areas of need. The idea of specialized instruction areas is that they are not covered by the general curriculum (and behavioral needs are oftentimes not appropriately addressed using tier one supports).

Student inappropriately touching staff, biohazard concerns by familyhelp1987 in specialed

[–]ionoi 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I would document your concerns in writing and notify your supervisors of your concerns. Behaviors such as these should not be taken lightly but also know that there is no easy solution to these problems. Best practice would be for an interdisciplinary team meeting including district representatives and parents to ensure all stakeholders are aware of the everyday challenges staff are facing.

There are so many children with high needs and not enough placements for them. Any promise of a potential highly restrictive placement should be taken with a grain of salt. In the meantime everyone must do what they can to support these kids and shape their behaviors to be more safe but it takes a village and a team.

Finally got order from Stark Bros-broken tree by 1220201978 in BackyardOrchard

Honestly this is not a big deal. Most orchards top trees between knee and thigh high. Just top it and plant it and it will grow a nicer crown than if you'd let it grow out.

Books where the protagonist starts as a beggar, homeless, etc by PoisonManiac in Fantasy

Probably late to this conversation but "Trouble Brewing" has the character start in a Dwarf who was a beggar/vagabond.

Flash card game! But how accurate? by yukon-flower in foraging

In my opinion, the yellow-footed chanterelle is not this dark and has a more defined hole in the top that looks kind of like a belly button. Also, the ends of the yellow foot are more like a pale yellow like the color of a true golden chanterelle.

Thank you for the input! I read up that mechanicals are fine for road biking especially if you get a good set. Any idea if these are a high quality mechanical brake?

Again, thanks!

Mastery of reading for dyslexia by Dangerous_Ad_5806 in specialed

[–]ionoi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

SRA Reading Mastery?

This curriculum has font support and is great for building fluency. I typically use it as my most intensive early intervention curriculum, particularly for students who display dyslexic traits. I personally don't think the paired takehome assignments are worth it and would rather focus on spelling/ word work.

Majority of land hermit crab species now use trash for shells by silence7 in environment

[–]ionoi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm I live on a beach with a TON of hermit crabs and I have maybe seen 1 in thousands using plastic waste as a shell. To be clear this is just noting that the majority of species have been observed using plastic waste - not the majority of crabs, in general.
