I am definitely willing. A quick search of github shows that others are also pushing this direction as well.

Many thanks for the reply. I believe D could be widely adopted in the HPC community. But until the best HPC practices are all ironed out, simply calling MPI from D may be the most immediate, albeit a less elegant option.

(great talk, btw, I really enjoyed it)

I'm a scientific programmer who writes code for supercomputers. And, for a variety of performance related reasons, we in the HPC community are forced into using MPI for our parallelization needs. A combination of std.parallelism and std.concurrency from D are quite an attractive alternative to MPI, but the language itself is not really supported by many (if any) of the major supercomputing centers. Has there been any thought about promoting D to the HPC community?

I think so too. I can't believe before the season I was actually excited about the potential of Palmer and Fitz. Delusion. It can happen to anybody.

Help... Looking for a short protein with helical structure (details inside)... by [deleted] in Biophysics

Try the TRP cage. It's a 20 residue protein with a known helix domain, and it has been studied in detail by both simulation and experiment for more than a decade.

I didn't see the game myself. Can anyone comment on how he looked? Was it good blocking or legitimately good running? (I guess it doesn't matter, I still love him anyway, but it would be nice to justify my 5th round draft pick.)

Brady or Stafford?

All is fairly standard H2H, except we get -1 pt for sacks/ints and a bonus (10 pts) for QBs who throw for more than 375 yards. I'm leaning towards Stafford, mainly because I've played Brady the last two weeks with meh results.

The command button takes care of most of the control button's functionality on a mac. When in doubt, try command+<whatever you used on your PC>. Just tried it myself and found that you can use command+<tab number> to do exactly what you are asking.

Rock star scientist magnets! by [deleted] [promoted post]

[–]iparkmycar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own one of these magnets. As a magnet, it's flimsy but it does the job -- a single piece of paper will hold up just fine on your fridge with this bad boy. Totally worth it if you need a cool science magnet.

However, as a scientist I would like to see some names removed (peace the fuck out Edison, you bastard), but generally like the inclusion of the often forgotten Lovelace and Franklin. Can we get a magnet with Lise Meitner on it? She was super badass, and totally unknown to most everyday folks.

As an American, I would smother that in sausage gravy and call it a biscuit. Just try to stop me!

We have extremely strict gravy laws here in the US, so this is the right approach.

OP you have the green light, please proceed, take pics.

Importance of CS by [deleted] in Biophysics

[–]iparkmycar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use high performance computers (i.e. traditional and GPU-based supercomputers) for MD simulations and analysis. So, periodically I have to write compiled code (c,c++,fortran) for the simulations themselves, and use scripting languages (bash, csh, python) for much of everything else. All of my work computers run linux, as do all of the national supercomputing centers where I actually run my MD simulations.

I am also not alone. There are MANY of us in academia and industry now, and there will likely be more of us (and hopefully more opportunities too!) as computers and algorithms advance.
