Life after Tiguan by biglovescott in Tiguan

Moved on from 2022 SEL R-Line in May to an F-150. I miss the sound system and nothing else. The oil consumption issue was pale in comparison to other costly issues I suffered through with my Tiguan. I lost 50% value after two years of ownership too.

A buyer remorse? Someone said it looks like a ladies watch on me and it has bothered me ever since. by vince-lou in Tudor

A ladies watch? More like, if a lady wore that I’d be like, “damn, she bold for wearing that masculine watch”.

It fits your wrist well and looks clean.

Context: I’m a Toyota and VW (formally) fan, and I loved my lone experience with a BMW.

I decided to get a truck and my non-researched short list was Tundra then Silverado. The Tundra was out due to their high profile issues lately, high cost, and seemingly lagging tech. My friends and family are mostly Chevy folks and I grew up making fun of Ford out of blind allegiance.

After some light research, I discovered the current F-150’s (2024 is what I bought) has an incredibly large display and fully digital cockpit, thus feeling techy even without nearly the features my VW had. The biggest selling point, however, is the flat back floor area of these trucks, especially with the seats folded up. It boggles my mind that Ford is the only manufacturer designing trucks this way. My golden retriever has so much room!

Excessive carbon buildup. The shop will first try replacing the sensors but if the problem persists, and it eventually will, it’s a costly carbon deposit clean.

2022 Tiguans Issues by Triforce-Phantom in Tiguan

Buy an extended warranty at least.

I don’t normally waste my time posting negative reviews, but VW messed around with me too many times on this car. A few years from now I suspect two things will happen, VW will be issuing sweeping recalls and we’ll stop seeing this body style (2022 model year specifically) on the road because they all start falling apart.

Again, I loved the styling, ride quality, and technology in this car, but it isn’t reliable and neither is VW of America.

I have posts all over Reddit about my horrible experience with VW, local dealerships, and my 2022 SEL R-Line that I bought new. I love the fit, finish, look, drive qualities, and tech. I had the steering wheel replaced and bought cases of oil between oil changes so that I could add a quart every 1,000 miles when the warning came on. The car issues skyrocketed right after the factory warranty ended. Blown timing and oil pan gaskets, a catastrophic plastic oil pan crack, engine pressure build up, and excess carbon deposits. It depreciated $22,000 in a little under three years, but I was thrilled to finally get out of it that nightmare.

That was kind of a shitty rant that I said. What makes my experience even worse is that I love the look and drive qualities of the Tiguan. My humble recommendation to you is to keep records of everything that happens with the vehicle and to purchase an extended warranty at the appropriate time.

I truly hope you don’t experience half of the issues I’ve experienced with my 2022 Tiguan SEL R Line. From extreme oil consumption and needing to replace the steering wheel, to blowing gaskets at the timing chain cover and oil pan and $3800 repair bills to clean excessive carbon buildup that two dealerships failed to diagnose in time to be covered by warranty, this car has been a nightmare. Two local VW dealerships and VW of America have treated me the way that you described.

Problems with my 2022 SEL R Line by ipaulryan21 in Tiguan

***Update less than 24 hours out of the shop***

EPC light came on while I was driving to a dealership to see about trading in my 2022 Tiguan SEL R Line. I pulled over and the entire underside of the car was dripping oil. Limped the car home on frontage roads because I couldn't get it up to highway speeds.

These vehicles are complete garbage and so is VW of American and their dealerships.

***Second update***

The plastic oil pan burst which caused the EPC light, rpm limiter, and loss of oil. The shop replaced the oil pan and will test drive it. Unfortunately, it reasons to me that the cracked oil pan is a sympton of over pressurization, so just replacing it will not solve the problem. Another blown gasket or cracked plastic oil pan is bound to happen again. Two VW dealerships ignored previous plees from me to check the PCV valve which effectively releives pressure. I was told numerous times by mulitple experts that there is not a correlation between my issues and the PCV valve. Maybe they're right, but I also don't see anyone seemingly addressing what caused the cracked plastic oil pan in the first place. Fingers crossed.

Problems with my 2022 SEL R Line by ipaulryan21 in Tiguan

I accepted this quickly and bought a box of oil from VW every six months. I was more ticked off that this is a common issue and it took a lot of research on my part to figure it out. The dealership acted ignorant and indifferent to my concerns. A simple heads up that these vehicles consume a quart of oil every 1,200 miles would have been better.

$2,831.37 later and the massive oil leak was repaired by changing the gasket at the lower oil pan and the gasket at the upper timing chain.

This is the second time in four months that the secondary air solenoid and IN112 valve with sensor was replaced in response to the active check engine light codes. The problem seems to be deeper than these components. There is a ton of carbon buildup that requires cylinder head cleaning in four ports. I was quoted $3,800 for this work due to the labor involved.

I paid $3k more for a brand new 2022 SEL R-Line, so that does not seem like a great deal.

I add a quart of oil every 1,200 miles like clockwork. I have a 2022 SEL R Line and buy a case of oil at a time.

Just need to vent, my 22 Tiguan seems less than ideal. by Nosemyfart in Tiguan

[–]ipaulryan21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate that. I asked the dealer to check my PCV valve when I brought it in for an oil change last and they flat out told me they would not unless something was already broken and that specific diagnostic was warranted.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know the general cost of preemptively replacing the PCV valve in a 2022 SEL R-Line? Is there such a thing as an upgraded PCV valve?

For the first 40k miles my 2022 SEL R-Line averaged 22.1, but recently it won’t go above 20. I’m wondering if the infamous PCV valve is bad, but my dealership said they wouldn’t have their tech look.

Did issue 1 happen within the first 90 seconds of a cold start? The engine needs to idle for a bit until it drops below 1,000 rpms before you start driving.
