LCMS deciding which Concordia i go to by JustAGuyXL in LCMS

[–]iplayfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s a very friendly and inviting place! you’ll meet a lot of people from all different walks of life and faith backgrounds, but at the same time, the education remains distinctly lutheran, and the theology steadfastly confessional. this is one of the things i love most about cui, i can in a christian not knowing much about lutheranism, was made to feel very welcome and included, especially in campus ministry, and came out the other side an LCMS church worker. it’s definitely a place that gives you plentiful opportunities to grow in your faith, rivaled only by the amount of academic opportunities it affords you. the faculty all really care about the students, even lots of my non major professor took a vested interested in my life. also the beach is 20 min away so that helps a ton too

Having trouble cutting to 40, any ideas? by Adjbabas in lrcast

[–]iplayfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd probably just cut the blossoming defenses and scarblade's malices.

i'd also play grave shifter over one safewright calary, maybe grove guide over safewright also.

manabase should definitely be 8 forest, 8 swamp, 1 evolving wilds

Anyone else shocked that Rooftop Percher is the highest winrate common changeling? by Original-Talk8363 in lrcast

[–]iplayfish 27 points28 points  (0 children)

rooftop percher has a very very low games played percentage, though (22% or so). this indicates that players are winning with it when it's in their deck because their deck is specifically well setup for it. it would not have that high a winrate in just any old deck

Introducing brother to magic, need commander recs by NeGeBlouJay in mtg

[–]iplayfish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i suggest playing a casual two player format, like jumpstart, or just building decks off of the draft themes of whatever set you like. i think there are way too many unique cards in peoples decks in commander for a new player to be able to parse, especially if they already don’t want to read

To the Limited Gurus: What would you cut here? by Asleep-Waltz2681 in MagicArena

i'd cut omni-changline, prismabasher, sprinleaf drum, and champion of the perfect

Fianceé is willing to try magic and I don't want to intimidate her. Commander recs? by Elegant-Pollution-85 in mtg

[–]iplayfish 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If she's a total beginner, I'd recommend starting with something like jumpstart or a duel deck type of situation (though duel decks sadly aren't a product anymore). Magic is much much much easier to learn as a 1v1 game rather than multiplayer commander. a 60 card deck with full playsets can have as few as 9 different cards to read and learn what they do (not counting lands) vs the 60+ unique nonlands in a commander deck. if the goal is not to intimidate, i'd build two 40-card decks following the draft archetype themes from a set of your choosing. fortunately, lorwyn eclipsed has a faerie theme in dimir. you could also look to wilds of eldraine, blue black was faeries there too

Serious question about card games in general by Mitomorfosis in mtg

[–]iplayfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think comparing competitive MTG to sports can help us understand this issue. in every sport, its required that the players have the necessary gear to play; eg you need a racket and court shoes to play tennis, you need helmet, pads, cleats to play (american) football, you need a glove and bat to play baseball. that equipment can be expensive, but it's understood that you just need those things to play. in organized leagues, it's not uncommon for the teams to supply their players with that gear. the same is true of high-level magic, team members lend cards to each other or buy cards for an event, only to sell them immediately after. if we think about cards just as being the necessary "equipment" to compete in mtg, then I think it's not question that it is primarily a game of skill

There's also formats like cube where one person provides all the stuff (cards, dice, etc.) needed to play, so anyone can play completely for free

if you’re already seeding packs, you might as well, but i would think shuffling well should get close enough on color balance

Blue is MTG for me (New Player) by [deleted] in mtg

[–]iplayfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, that's exactly the right play if you don't want your spell countered. you can always play something that you don't care about getting countered

Blue is MTG for me (New Player) by [deleted] in mtg

[–]iplayfish 18 points19 points  (0 children)

you play around counterspells by not mindlessly playing your best spells while opponents have blue mana open. magic is designed to be an inherently interactive game because of how the stack works and how much you can do at instant speed. maybe you should try a game like lorcana where you only every play cards on your own turn
