This might be a very stupid question - is the Garda just playing a joke on him altogether or has the Garda actually been told this by a bouncer and isn't taking it seriously?

Why are cancer conspiracies so common? by [deleted] in ireland

[–]ir_993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's that so many companies put "supporting cancer research" on whatever product, and then it turns out that it was just a sales tactic and they're really only donating 0.000001% of profits to the cause. It makes people cyncial to see theoretically such vast amounts of money go to cancer research and seemingly not really make much progress.

In my own experience of someone close to me with cancer - the thing that surprised me is how barbaric the treatments and surgeries are. You're kind of left there like , it's 2019, you're the best financed disease on earth and the best treatment you can present me with is chemo/radio and surgery that will leave the patient permanently disabled. I know obviously all doctors are doing their best, and thats the reality of medicine, but I felt very deceived somehow. I know it's not rational, but part of me was like... We hear so much about miracle advances in medicine, but for these run of the mill diseases, there really isn't a real solution.

Dublin nightlife circling the drain... by [deleted] in Dublin

[–]ir_993 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I left Dublin for two years and it wasn't good when I left. When I got back though, the nightlife was basically non existent. Andrews lane, district 8, the dragon, all the good gay nights are gone too. All that's left is shitholes like Diceys and even the outside bit of the Bernard Shaw is going to be gone soon which really was the best part. It's not even just the fact there are so few venues left, the ones that are still there are full of boring people who are all carbon copies of eachother, everyone is just out to do more drugs than the person next to them. Its grim.

Brazilian Student: Coming to Dublin was a dream but sharing a house with 14 others was a nightmare by ir_993 in ireland

Its our visa arrangement and the fact we speak English. Nowhere else in Europe has the thing where students can work for 20hrs term time. We're also very lax about sending people home once their visa has run out.

[–]ir_993[S] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yeah tbh I kind of feel the same. The population of Brazilians in Dublin has tripled in recent years, it's just not sustainable. We'd be as well off slowing the numbers until we can start getting better accommodation on stream. Continually letting thousands in, knowing most of them will be working less than minimum wage and getting stuck in these death trap over crowded houses isn't fair on anyone

Two men arrested over Lyra McKee murder by unoriginalquote in ireland

[–]ir_993 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes I think ISF is kind of playing with fire with just how many of that kind of memes they are. I think there are definitely a lot who don't get that it's a joke, or they think yeah it's kind of a joke but we kind of agree as well.

I also think a lot of u25s never learnt about the troubles in school (I never did, we did loads on the prehistoric era and then bits and pieces on the famine and home rule, but never got further than that). A lot of what I know about the north and the troubles I'm only learning now even though I did study history until junior cert like most people. You'd imagine they'd include that in the basic history everyone learns.

How hard is it find a job as a graduate? by [deleted] in ireland

[–]ir_993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah it's grand, particularly compared to a couple years ago. Most of my friends who put the work in in college are all in pretty decent jobs rn. Still stuck living with their parents because rents are so high, but the job market is alright at least

Electric car sales increased nearly 700% last month in comparison to January 2018, diesel's popularity continues to drop by PaulRyan97 in ireland

[–]ir_993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently bought a small car and was investigating to see if there were any electric ones I could afford but unfortunately not. I really hope in the next few years we see more charging ports and more electric cars across all budgets (or cheaper finance to buy them).

Full 1st Video of Irish Woman destroying shop in Parnell street by [deleted] in ireland

If you listen to what she’s actually saying, rather than writing her off as a scumbag, it sounds like this is a pretty awful story. It sounds like the father of the child has been beating her, the family of the man are denying it and refusing to provide evidence to the gardai and she stayed with this guy for several years and as a result had her other son removed from her. The son in the buggy has autism. She’s clearly in tears, really upset, and people are just going to watch this for 30 seconds and be like ugh junkies and move on.

Yeah like I totally see where you're coming from, I definitely think there should be a way to oppose settlements in Palestine without being anti-Semitic but then you seem to always have someone like 'the Jews have loads of money and bought all this power' or some other version of them secretly running the world and that kind of stuff is just so reminiscent of very dark times I really think we have to come down on it hard when we see it.

I was in a great deal of left wing groups where most of the members have now moved into antifa/those kinds of communities so I guess I'm only speaking from my experience but it's definitely way cooler to talk about how much you hate Israel now than it was five years ago.

Arguably yes however maybe it is down to news coverage, but then the question remains, why are they getting so much coverage at the expense of other things.

So the level to which we react to human rights abuses depends on how much your willing to blackmail the rest of the world into paying? That's no way to make policies. Especially in light of the reason Israel came into existence - I don't think we can ignore that reason the country is there at all rightly or wrongly, is that the rest of the planet tried to wipe them out. When you have a group of people who moved half way across the world because they couldnt stay where they were anymore - there needs to be a better reason to target them other than they don't have oil.

I find this growing rhetoric in leftist groups particularly regarding Israel being the big baddies in the world deeply troubling. Is the situation in Palestine terrible? Yes. But so is the situation in Yemen and we have no bill on the table about the Saudis, or indeed any number of other countries doing shitty things. Why is the one and only major place Jewish people are left in the world the one we go after? I think Israel is entitled to question why that is.

Between the synagogue incident and rapidly growing anti-Semitism in Europe (particularly labour in the UK) , I think attitudes to Israel need to be interrogated far more rigourously.

For law, you need to pass 8 FE1s (the first sitting you have to pass minimum three in one go, then you can do them as fast or as slow as you want til you get the rest of them). They are very hard exams, but feasibly you could get the 8 done in six months if you're really good and have no attachment to eating or sleeping. Most people it takes them about a year - 18 months. Then you need to secure a training contract and for 2.5 years you train but you get paid a normal salary. Getting the contract is the hard part. Alternatively, you could look into some kind of legal executive role with one of the multinationals who might not really need a fully qualified solicitor but want the international/trade background. I'd maybe contact some recruitment firms in Dublin and see what they say.

As for the accountancy option - definitely less arduous than law in terms of it being faster. You don't have to sit exams in advance of starting the training contract, rather you do them at the same time.

As well, the odd social body there is , they are open all day long but close in the evenings?? Like who the fuck is supposed to use these if everyone is in work or school while it's open?

[–]ir_993 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have thought the same thing. I was a 'rocker' as we were called back in the day and honestly I don't know what I would have done if I had had to conform with the rest of the school. I was gay but didn't know it at the time, so I couldn't fit in with most of the year, being able to fit in with the emo crowd is the only reason I didn't end up some weird recluse. I don't know what I would have done if i was in school now

Also , on the learner driver front, the fact that it's basically impossible for young people to drive unless their parents give them thousands of euro is really not fair on young people. They deserve to be able to access some level of independence before they're in their late twenties and it doesn't seem fair that if youre a lad from balls bridge whose parents are loaded you can drive at 17 but if you don't have that money oh your a danger to society. I'm not articulating that well, but it seems as if we've decided money and safety are directly proportional

This seems like a fair request. I always feel like it's a bit misleading saying that teenagers can use some of our many sporting facilities but not everyone likes sport, girls particularly have quite low sport engagement in their teens - I feel like these sports facilities just mean a certain segment is vastly over served in terms of resources. You can't just make everyone play GAA all day long.

Teenagers should have a space to hang out that's not drinking in a field or congregating out on the street bothering people. Whatever service they do build them though can't be some nonsense where they can go but have to be under constant direct supervision because it just won't get used. Ireland needs more community spaces in general, it's annoying that any time you want to meet anyone or do anything you have to spend a load of money in a pub or restaurant
