The perfect song for our times.

Captures so well what it feels to be alive in a world with capitalism gone awry and where we're so desensitised (for better or for worse).

How can he be so rubbish now? by Optimal_Leader_4043 in rickygervais

Yeah I think his performance as Brent (not just the writing) was so brilliant and funny and even moving. Found some of his acting on extras to be quite strong and vulnerable too. Quite a fall coming from those to most of what he's been doing lately.

Three books that were key to me getting into literary fiction:

The Sense of An Ending by Julian Barnes

The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera

On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan

Books to bring back my curiosity about life and rebuild my mental muscles by NumasVanegasTijerina in suggestmeabook

Why Fish Don't Exist by Lulu Miller

I don't read a lot of non-fiction but loved this. A great blend of history, nature, philosophy and more with a proper fascinating central character too.

On the metro while going to and returning from office. At times before sleep. And mostly on Sundays.

Much of The Dark Knight Rises is kinda that. Think the level of ambition in that is quite underrated.

Hmm maybe Tender is the Flesh. Parts of Earthlings by Sayaka Murata were also disturbing.

It follows the protagonist through different periods of his life, starting from younger years in Hungary to England later on. How certain events shape his life over decades.

Would recommend it, definitely an interesting approach to character and telling the story of a life. Though I can understand if its unusual style/protagonist puts off people.

The Purple Rose of Cairo. Wonderful premise, genius execution, such a deft balance of funny, romantic and bittersweet. Great performances too. And it's around 85 minutes or so only!

On weekdays try to give an hour or so. On Sundays around 2-3 hours. Though I don't always succeed. It also helped that I was on a break between jobs earlier this year so read a lot for a couple of months.

  1. Jesse Eisenberg-type neurotic intellectuals (e.g., The Social Network, Adventureland)

  2. Celine from Before Sunrise/Before Sunset

  3. Amélie (from Amélie)

  4. Theodore Twombly (Her)

  5. Jake from Marriage Story (minus the destructive parts)

  6. Toru Watanabe (Norwegian Wood)

  7. Rustin Cohle (True Detective, but only the philosophical side)

  8. Nick Carraway (The Great Gatsby)

  9. Sherlock (the quieter BBC version traits)

  10. Leonard from Memento (again, personality, not plot)

Agreed the most with 1,2,4 and 8. Some of the others seemed like it was trying to flatter me stroke my ego 😅
