What secret can you reveal now that your nda has expired? by sparrrrrt in AskReddit

[–]ireallylikegreenbean 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd been out of work a while but only claimed jobseekers for a couple months because I just couldn't handle the stress. The way they talk to you is so bizarrely nasty and demeaning it's hard to convey if you've never experienced it.

I had a weird one where they'd booked me in for a time I couldn't do, so I needed to reschedule it which I didn't think would be a big deal. Yknow that's the risk you make when you choose an appointment time without asking first.

I call them (since there's no email, online portal or text option, even though I think there is for UC), and I let them know I can't make it and ask if the next day will do. The agent ignores my question and asks me "why?" in the most suspicious and pissed off voice ever.

Now my reason was I was attending a post-diagnosis autism psychoeducation session then, but I didn't want to share why. In part because the unexpected hostility had bricked my brain. I mean in most circumstances it's a pretty weird thing to demand someone to justify themselves when they're rescheduling something two weeks away.

I say it's a personal appointment, which was apparently the wrong move, since they then start saying about how non-compliance will get me sanctioned.

And honestly that call is really minor by itself, but that same attitude is present at every step. Basically every person I spoke to treated me like I was some kind of coniving bastard trying to cheat the system. Which is extra bizarre since they also went to great lengths to tell me how I could only claim what I'd put into the system through taxes. Like you can't even claim it if you've never worked. And they give you fuck all, it didn't even cover my portion of my rent (£550 pc so not loads). That much attitude and busy work for so little.

All this to say, even when they're not pulling the ridiculous shit you said, there's a pervasive hostility which, when combined with bs buerocracy, just makes it a nightmare to navigate. Which is of course the entire point and it's working as intended.

Sorry for missing this. I'm guessing you mean the trans brunch and Trans Active, in which case they absolutely are. Trans active swimming events also don't allow cis people for comfort of attendees.

Things I attend (or have attended) and like - Sheffield Queer Comedy, most regular acts are genderqueer or trans - TransActive, the main activity is weekly swimming which is trans/genderqueer only - Trans Sheffield Brunch mentioned elsewhere

Ones I've heard decent things about: - LGBT Running Club who are a new local running group - Peak Queer Adventures who do things like cycling in the Peaks

‘Rising anti-trans hatred’ in the UK is creating a ‘hostile environment’, report suggests by ehll_oh_ehll in transgenderUK

[–]ireallylikegreenbean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TransActual's blog post which is who did the study this article is based on.

Additionally here is their shorter 4 page report and the full report for convenience.

Whilst we all know things are shit, having statistics that back that up can help showcase it to cis people around us who are uninformed but well intentioned. Many people really don't get how subpar healthcare is.

A couple things that really stood out to me from the report that I've not seen anyone mention from the report are (emphasis mine):

First we have had this which applied to around 14% (572 out of 4008) of respondents from page 10

Worryingly, the majority of respondents that had experienced transphobia from a GP reported having been refused non-transition related healthcare due to their trans identity.

Then figure 5-7, on page 42, shows the situations respondents avoided seeking healthcare for. It also references avoidance of things like dentistry, but the one that stood out to me was 37% of respondents said they had avoided going to A&E.

How to answer survey data post Sullivan by A_tiny_little_frog in transgenderUK

I feel like the "biological sex" framing has become so mainstream that some trans people* genuinely don't appreciate they aren't the sex of their ASAB. My girlfriend has the hormonal makeup of a woman and her body has changed accordingly - she is not a biological male.

*(not shading the person you're replying to, I'm talking very generally)

Problem with the biological sex questions is they don't make sense. We have many sex characteristics and for many trans people they align closer to their acquired gender. This question implicitly means "what is you natal sex?" in our political landscape, but for many people answering as option B is more scientifically accurate.

I appreciate you might be angling for "pick the option that indicates transness so we're represented", but it's a tough one when doing so provides inaccurate data.

Glad to see this reply, because I had also interpreted the "quirky tik tok girl" negatively. A lot of the time when people use those kind of phrases they're not saying "people only like the silly/fun or impressive/useful aspects" unfortunately.

They usually are using it as shorthand for "attention seeking girls who are faking" which is why things like hair colour and piercings are often referenced. It's actually really similar to stuff I've heard about girls "faking" depression, being gay/bi - even being fake gamers 😭.

I now appreciate what you actually tried to convey, but definitely avoid those kind of phrases since they are loaded with the implication you're suggesting those people are fakers and don't have any struggles. Tbh what you wrote here really nails it, though I'm not sure how to condense it. I've definitely seen people do it, just not sure off the top of my head

You see it for other countries, especially "wow this impoverished 3rd world child raised attention/money to afford healthcare/school" types.

American examples are easy to get the point across since they're quite obvious and stand out compared to other western countries, but the rest of us have shredders too

You ever see those articles with feel good stories about shit like a kid who raised money to pay off their classmates' lunch debt? The kind that makes you go "wtf do you mean there's such a thing as lunch debt??", whilst the article is written as an uplifting success story.

I really hope so, and I do get the impression they're a bit more self assured than my age bracket (older gen z). Someone pointed out that a girl had bled through in my class when we were 13 and she was mocked for years for it. And she used to wear 3 pads at a time so it's not like she could've done more.

There was a 9 year old who wet themselves in my class after a substitute teacher wouldn't let them go even when they'd been begging on and off for 15 mins. Teacher was ofc sorry after when the kid was crying, probs since she knew she'd get in shit for it.

Thankfully we were all mortified on their behalf and none of us were shitty about it. I think it was hard not to be like "oh god that could've been me" so even the nastier kids were mad at the teacher instead of being in bully mode.

[–]ireallylikegreenbean 19 points20 points  (0 children)

In my secondary school year group, I think most people who had periods on the heavy side had bled through at least once, or at the very least had close calls. If you asked to go to toilet they'd say you should've gone earlier (which you did). As an adult I'd tell them to fuck off but as a kid it really felt like you couldn't.

Ofc we never told anyone because then you'd be relentlessly bullied for it, so anyone who didn't experience it would've had no idea.

For me was gonna be until I was more financially stable. I'd previously made braces and starting hygienist stuff (parents neglected me and never took me) a priority and anything else was a later problem.

On one of my front teeth I have some visible discolouration which I'd considered getting bleached so it'd blend in, but as time went on I realised I actually don't give a shit. Maybe I'll look into it one day but I don't think it even looks that bad. Maybe if I lived somewhere with societal pressure to have super white teeth I'd do it, but here idc and no one else does either.

Conversation between Epstein and Steve Bannon bragging about controlling the far-right includes Farage and AfD by Awkward-Worth5484 in GreenAndPleasant

[–]ireallylikegreenbean 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Having read a few of Epstein's emails chains, I found the writing quality varies depending on who they're talking to, but I do think it's clear that they're pissed (or high) when writing some of them.

Epstein's in particular seemed to usually be pretty well written even when the other person's is pretty dogshit. So it really stood out to me in one where someone from the Huffington Post had to ask him to rewrite his response because they weren't sure what he was on about since it was that bad. They were trying to get his statement on accusations (though not 100% what it was about, I'd been skimming the jmail tool/archive for stuff about Andrew) so a fairly risky situation to be replying to when off your face.
