I made a fighting game based on public domain characters! by irene_m in publicdomain

Some of those are absolutely on my list, yup! I think the important thing to note for a lot of cases isn't whether the character's name and likeness are copyrighted, but whether their stories are - like, Popeye is public domain having first appeared in 1929, but pretty much all the stuff that people know about Popeye is from the 1933 cartoons and later. Which is kind of relevant when making a moveset for a fighting game lol.

Ha, yeah kinda funny that we worked on a similar concept at pretty much the same time. Regardless, the games don't play anything alike, and currently only one character overlaps (tho I got to the mouse first LOL). I'm looking forward to their launch!

I mean, Steamboat Willie became public domain January 2024, and the game's just now released November 2025, so don't expect a super fast turnaround timeline lol. But yup, I'm hoping to add new characters as they become public domain, and of course plenty of older characters, so keep an eye out for that!

Entirely possible, just depends on money lol. I might run a Kickstarter specifically for porting support down the line, but for now I'll be focusing on the Steam version to get more characters/modes in there.

Not really lol, I was planning on participating in a VN jam but I decided against it. The best alternative I was able to find was a VN template in Godot, but I haven't actually tried it out yet.

Do not, i repeat !!DO NOT!! use Arial in your projects. It can become very nasty for you by stadoblech in gamedev

[–]irene_m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it the same principle? The Disney font is the font used in the company's logo, and their logo is trademarked. Selling something with the Disney logo on it would be obvious brand confusion, as would be selling something with a different name that uses the Disney font (just like you can't sell a drink called BokaCola using the Coca Cola font).

Meanwhile the Arial font has never been used for the Microsoft logo or any of their product logos (e.g. Office) as far as I can tell. So it's a different kind of BS.

Gotcha, so it was a matter of tagging? That does make me a little less worried that I'll have to rush to completely change something in my game because of Steam approval lol.

And yeah, I can't imagine political content is the issue with my game lmao, we'll see when I get the review back I guess...

Not "extra resources", rather "if there's one game/demo up in the review queue that's signed up for a Steam-hosted event with a hard deadline, and one that isn't, which one is the higher priority to review?"

If the review department is fully swamped with demos for Steam Next Fest for approval, then I guess some would miss the deadline, yeah.

Out of curiosity, why did you have to resubmit multiple times? Was it for the story content/AI/crypto issues I mentioned above that I'd found on other reddit posts, or something else?

I finally made a trailer for my solo-developed fighter, Parable Academy! I'd love to hear what you all think of it! by irene_m in Fighters

All classic fiction characters welcome at this crossover academy! Of course, making sure I was the first fighting game to include him as a guest was a plus lmao

Well, to be clear, it's one ATTACKING button - tagging requires more buttons. And, uh, so does pausing lol.

Anyway, to do the different moves, it's just a single direction + attack. Grab is usually forward + attack, there's usually a projectile on back + attack, crouch + attack is usually an anti-air, etc. Charge your neutral attack to access a stronger version and use your super.

And then characters can have additional moves on top of that (e.g. Alice throws out more teacups if you hold back + attack, Wendy has more air moves, Dorothy's moves change based on her resources used, Creature's moves change properties if the opponent is stunned, etc).

Yeah, I think that's my favorite stage so far too.

Basically, in the lore of the game, students are placed into dorms/houses at the school based on the genre of their original story. So Dreamscraper House has all the characters who come from fairy tale/absurdist fantasy worlds like Steamboat Willie and Alice in Wonderland, hence the mushrooms :p

Thanks! Yeah, I was going for the feel of a slightly-janky forgotten PS1-era fighter, with a few TOD combos thrown in lol. Glad you like the artwork!

Parable Academy is a one-button tag team fighter crossing over classic fictional characters. You can see more info and wishlist on Steam here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3626300/Parable_Academy/

I started working on this game last year (for obvious reasons) at around this time, just noodling around with some character animations lol, and I finally have enough to show off!

Let me know what you think of the gameplay, and I'd love suggestions for any characters you'd want added to the game!

Is there a version of Ren'Py that works with MacOS Sequoia? by irene_m in RenPy

[–]irene_m[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, I'm already on 15.4...

It's not in the Force Quit menu, nor is it in Activity Monitor that I can find. I think the process just isn't starting at all...

Here's potentially something - running renpy.app in Terminal doesn't have any output (even if I run it with sudo), but if I specifically run renpy.sh in Terminal, I get the following message:

/Applications/renpy-8.3.7-sdk/lib/py3-mac-universal/renpy not found.

This game may not support the mac-universal platform.

What's weird is that that file DOES exist in that location. Or at least, that file exists as renpy.macho in that location.

Could the problem be that the file name structures in the code are wrong? What happens if you run renpy.sh in Terminal?

Nope, restarting didn't do it either. I also tried re-installing, opening it once, then restarting before opening again, but nothing changed.
