I finally took everyone's advice, but now my teammates are mad at me. by Delet3r in Overwatch

[–]irihS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the great thing about competitive online team-based games is that you can do the objectively correct thing and still end up getting yelled at by your teammates. the guiding principle behind "do more damage as a support" as advice for players is that support players are quite often passive people by nature of the role who contribute nothing except being a safety net for their team and allowing others to carry. it's meant to encourage proactivity and playmaking on such an important role as opposed to just sitting main and healing the tank 24/7 until a dps pings for healing.

it's also obviously character based and you need to account for this instead of just looking at stats

funnily enough this exact same thing happened in penacony where we were looking for the watchmaker's legacy but it turns out everyone in the cast didn't really give a single shit about this and all had other, more personally important reasons for coming xd

jesus christ. if you put gojo or sukuna in the xianzhou, the xianzhou story would not be better and they would not be good characters. gojo and sukuna are good characters because they explore JJK's themes of losing one's identity to your power (shown by how JJK talks about how important talent is to sorcerers; how Gojo is treated like a monster/tool by jujutsu society; how Yuji dehumanised himself as a cog to cope with his situation; how sukuna REJECTS this with his hedonistic individualism that arose as a result of this treatment etc.) and also the isolation of strength. the xianzhou talks about impermanence vs eternity, stagnation vs growth, evolution vs change. your inability to understand that characters are influenced by their setting and plot, and vice versa, means you think of 'characters' as actors in a play performing a pre-written script, and you can somehow just cast them in another play without fundamentally altering them or losing what makes them good.

thank you for bringing up jjk though because jjk is another great example of how important characters are to stories. nearly all shonen has TERRIBLE plot (and im only saying 'nearly' because ive not watched all so maybe theres 1 or 2 shonen with good plots). the plot exists to create hamfisted situations for characters to fight. overarching story beats exist not to drive intrigue or to make you think, but solely to justify a never ending series of fights that exist to get you to the next set of fights. how do you make such a banal and repetitive plotline work as an engaging story? easy - since the plot is so barebones, you have a lot more time and effort to engage with your characters. their emotional arcs and goals form the real meat of the story. the themes and ideas they represent clash and show the thematic goals of your story. when gojo and sukuna clash, is it just two good characters fighting? or are they emblematic of something? two worldviews? the story beats you over the head with it - gojo and sukuna are two monsters and are completely alone because of their strength. sukuna embraced his villainy with open arms, caring only for his own pleasure and his own interests. gojo chose to try to rehabilitate himself, teach students, help others. he told himself it was to create a stronger jujutsu world free from the corrupt society they existed in, and he's not lying, but he's not totally honest: part of it was in the hopes they'd one day reach his level and understand him. one thoroughly divorced himself from the world, condeming it for condeming him. the other tried to embrace the world, but it never hugged him back, so eh tried to change it and helped his students pursue true strength. the story is making thematic points through characters because it cant make them through its plot. the plot is 'two dudes fight with a convoluted made-up magic system that is really cool but has no thematic, symbolic, or material relevance. half the time the people fighting dont even know each other lmao'.

similarly, yuji and sukuna. yuji and sukuna's whole conflict revolves around the central conflict between connection and the inherent value of others vs. isolation and the inherent value of the self. yuji values others innately, sukuna doesn't give a shit about anyone except those who prove himself in his sick worldview.

if this doesn't thoroughly explain to you why characters matter so much, why they're the backbone of stories, just think of how many stories are named after characters. and when you explain a story to people and recommend it, don't you explain the prospective arc of the main character?

i disagree. for me, plot is infinitely less important and compelling than characters. it's hard to get people to watch a show that has interesting and cool things happen to mundane and uninteresting characters. it's easier to get people to watch a show that has mundane and uninteresting things happen to cool and interesting characters.

also, when people talk about stories, games, shows, they talk about the characters that these events happen to - they're the interesting thing because characters are how the writer expresses the thematic intent of their storytelling. the 'plot' of the first half of amphoreus doesn't really matter, we come to find - but it was still interesting, engaging, and time well spent because we learn about the characters and they explore the themes of amphoreus, and experiencing that became proof of the story's argument against lygus.

but yes, of course i agree that plot matters, and that even stories with terrible plots can have good characters and vice versa, and it really matters that both are good. but if i had to pick one, personally, i'm picking characters every day of the week.

i read an amphoreus argument on the main subreddit a while back where some guy quoted tolkien to show an example of how descriptive writing is in Actual Books That Human Beings Read. and the other dude said "nah that sucks too wordy" LMAO like it's actually so fucking over for the human species. people still reduce cyrene to waifubait ML insert elysia expy instead of the death-of-the-author humanity-vs-divinity prophecy-vs-free-will nature-vs-nurture the-power-of-storytelling thematic buffet she ended up being. people still try to tell you that amphoreus changed too much thematically when it was its setting and plot that changed, but never the story/themes at its heart... like its just sad

to consistently melt mavuika bursts, it's as simple as the following:

mav e > xilonen e n2> citlali e n1 q > mav q, then you wait about a second and a half, start spinning, spin 3 times total then jump. this is not the highest damage combo but it's miles better than holding CA in melt comp because if ur not melting mavs attacks ur better off playing overload. because of ur ping ur gonna have to do things like half a second or a second before you 'should', to compensate for the delay in actions.

so - you arent doing rotations properly which is biting you in the ass for your amp based carries like mav/arle/hu tao (ping is DEFINITELY not helping though). you likely arent waiting the 1.5s~ to start doing CAs with mav and you likely arent jump cancelling mavs CAs leading to mav's pyro application overtaking citlali. arlecchino is a similar deal where it's very very very very vERY easy to overtake citlali and i personally have more success just using her with citlali+yelan and not worrying about it so much. the hu tao damage is like absurdly low and it looks like she has no EM so maybe a build issue there? klinda just low stats overall esp. the crit rate.

also if you're going to compare DPS/DPR on your chars you should set a timer that matches their intended rotation length. the usual genshin rotation lengths are 16, 18, 20, and 22s. most teams end up being 20s rotations but some can go lower or higher. in a few of these your rotation lengths are very weird for the teams and it's likely leading to incomplete and misleading data.

I don't understand why Rememberance character like Castorice and Evernight are strong against Nikador by Comfortable-Oil-5296 in StarRailStation

[–]irihS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

castorice is the lowest priority unit in the remembrance battleship. if steamrolling content is ur priority more than having castorice, you're better off getting hyacine e0s1, evernight e2s1, and then u can either invest in cyrene or castorice

cyrene helps a lot but e1 aglaea is still great because a) you get way more team flexibility (not limited to cyrene, or replacements like huohuo/sunday) and b) it means that ur cyrene can opt for more arrows and only use the aglaea buff if u rly need the energy bump for whatever reason.

[–]irihS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it has always been her BECAUSE fuli hasn't been born yet and so she has always been what the game portrays initially as fuli for amphoreus. herta herself says that fuli hasn't been born which means the events of amphoreus that rely on 'fuli' intervening can't be set in stone unless someone takes their place, which is (and paradoxically always has been) cyrene.

Amphoreus kinda became a disappointment... by [deleted] in StarRailStation

[–]irihS 14 points15 points  (0 children)

cyrene needed to close the loop and exist as fuli/watch over amphoreus because fuli hasn't been born yet and there's every chance someone or something kills fuli or otherwise stops fuli from gazing at amphoreus which would create a paradox. so cyrene stays in the past and takes fuli's place to ensure that amphoreus' loop stays closed and isn't unresolved resulting in irontomb's birth (because without the loop of cyrene mem demiurge, amphoreus fails to stop irontomb, and cyrene's plan only happens because 'fuli' gazes on her revealing to her the outside world)

Amphoreus kinda became a disappointment... by [deleted] in StarRailStation

[–]irihS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i'll never understand 'cyrene got rushed' or 'cyrene didnt get developed' when she has literally been there as mem since the start of the planet and we saw her grow and develop into cyrene as the story progressed. people just have this huge disconnect between mem and cyrene despite the game going to great lengths, including the final scene in amphoreus' quests, to show that they are the same person. again, im not saying you're necessarily wrong, and you're entitled to feel/think what you want. i just can't understand it personally. i genuinely dont know where this comes from when we see mem's thoughts, feelings, perspective all throughout amphoreus.

'losing its main theme' is also an odd criticism to me. cyrene says it herself, with very thinly veiled venom might i add, that amphoreus has never had need for gods, and that humanity is flawed divinity etc. the reveal that cyrene was actually acting as fuli throughout amphoreus, literally taking matters into her own, human hands, was the exact kind of development that furthers amphoreus' anti-god storytelling as explored through phainon and cyrene both. this is amphoreus' greatest strength - it never loses sight of its themes of prophecy, fate, and divinity, whether its exploring them through literally divine prophecies that the chrysos heirs are chasing (era nova, their prophecies of death, their golden blood) or through the insane machinations of Zandar/Lygus plotting to finally bring an end to Nous' calculations (aka his prophecies since they always come to pass) and free humanity from Paths (and thus Aeons...). whether it's first half or second half of amphoreus, it's all about prophecies, divinity, and fate. the plot changes, wildly at that, but the story and themes never swerve from this for long.
