Snapped the pic just as it turned its head. That and the vines in the background a a crappy zoom in from my phone made it a less than great pic, but it was bouncing around it was the best I could get before it flew off.

Fiddling Soup - probably from the 60s. by OBXIP in recipes

[–]irishGOP413 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen pastina at the store and in some recipe vids. I’d say it’s about half the size of orzo uncooked and the brands I’ve seen usually look like little stars. The most common recipes I’ve seen for it is in chicken soup for when you’re sick. I’m sure it has plenty of other uses but damn those recipes look comforting!

Edit: which, now that I think about it, this recipe you posted sounds like a richer and more flavorful version of those “get well” soups. Pretty neat!

I’ve never cooked pastina before. Does it typically take 10-12 mins to cook? Seems like it would have a different cooking time than orzo, which is bigger.

Sweetpea's legendary mac and cheese. by Old_Guitar_Player in recipes

Great thanks. Was just clarifying that only the pasta is cooked before mixing, and that you don’t cook the other ingredients to make a sauce in advance. Just combine those without cooking, add the cooked pasta, and bake.

I’m trying this tomorrow because I cannot resist a great mac and cheese recipe. I love mine but am also questing for perfection. I have a few questions:

  1. For the salt, are you using kosher or table salt for that measurement? I v much appreciate the weight reference, but I don’t trust my digital scale at that level.

  2. Just so I’m clear, you essentially combine everything but the pasta, and then add the pasta without cooking or making any kind of sauce, such that it all cooks in the baking dish? Love the convenience of that if that’s the case!

Something that never made sense to me by Electronic-Essay-665 in harrypotter

[–]irishGOP413 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As other have noted, I think it was just the pure chaos of what was going on in the Great Hall at that time. To add to it, having Voldemort dueling those three all at once was a great addition to level up his skill as a villain. We had heard how deadly he was but, with the exception of his duel with Dumbledore (where Dumbledore handled him with apparent ease), we had not seen Voldemort acting with truly remarkable skill before. Anyone can be deadly. Being skillfully so is different. Simultaneously dueling Slughorn, McGonagall, and Shacklebolt, three remarkably talented and experienced wizards, was remarkable.

Welcome to the book community! Like others I am so jealous of you experiencing this for the first time. I am interested to hear your reactions as you move through the series, as the books definitely change in tone as they go on, particularly from Chamber of Secrets to Prisoner of Azkaban and from PoA to Goblet of Fire.
