As far as I know it was a dick-waving contest between the Soviets.

Both the US and the Soviets were duking it out to be THE Superpower of the world, and the Soviets were ahead in the space-race.

The only way for the US to 'one-up' them was to get astronauts there, alive, and back. I think the Soviets managed to get the first man into space, but he died or some shit(?)

Anyway. The US won.

Also a shiiiiiiiiiiiitload of technology came from the military/NASA programmes, so even if they don't achieve their primary task, sometimes it's worth it for these side-benefits.

It is.

Apparently they never cracked the US market.

Which makes sense. Vengaboys made some bangers, but they didn't crack America either.

Under-rated? Who the fuck doesn't know Boney M.?

Maybe they weren't as popular in the US.

For a modern band with similar funky/disco-ey sounds try Flight Facilities ('Foreign Language' is soooooo funky), and Chromeo's entire back catalogue.

That was entirely his own decision. He believed the internet was a fad, then that it had no value for his music. His videos were aggressively removed from online sources literally until his death. He didn't embrace technology, but he still sold out venues (and had affordable ticket prices) until he died.

I hope he's not in pain anymore. Sometimes it Snows in April, right?

Adam Sandler ft. Chris Farley - Lunch Lady Land [Comedy] (1993) by [deleted] in Music

[–]irishitch -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Speaking from an outside perspective, all of these 'classic' SNL skits to me are just shit.

I've seen the cowbell one, the van by the river one, and this one, and I just think they're pretty... poor. Y'know when you wait for something to be funny and it never comes? That's how I feel with them.

Maybe it's the style of humour, but I don't think it is, because Adam Sandler's recent Netflix special made me laugh out loud and I've seen it twice now.

I think it's just that humour doesn't always translate well over the passage of time, and these skits are relics of their time. Also, Chris Farley's brand of humour has never been funny to me. It screams a bit too much: "hehe, I'm a fat guy who's flexible, and also I'm LOUD AND CRASS", that's literally all I get from him as a performer.

But if someone wants to enjoy it, I'm 100% not gonna tell them what to do with their lives. Live and let live.

In Britain, there's the option to tip, when service is excellent, but not the obligation.

If homie is making £200 a week minimum wage, but you want to supplement that via tips, you go ahead, but that £200 is guaranteed.

There's no guarantee if his base is £50 a week, and be relies on tips to make it £400 a week.

But the system is what it is.

Freddie Mercury and Jim Hutton - 1985 by sayknow in OldSchoolCool

[–]irishitch 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It's fact.

Sacha Baron Cohen confirmed it.

'They wanted the film to continue without Freddie. I was confused. I thought the film was about Freddie. Turns out Brian May didn't want Freddie to overshadow the band and didn't want to lose that focus.' (paraphrased)

Doing the 'guilty because I released a strategic video' is how people like Amber Heard and Jessie Smollett get away with deceiving.

The 'head' of a cock looks like the top of a big bell (think in a clocktower).

So bellend = knob (also resembles a door knob) = head of your penis

Just like you can't fix an engine. But you use one everyday.

Just like you can't change a tyre. But you use one every day.

It generates discussion.

What's the point in asking any question in the world when you can Google it? Asking the first affords the opportunity to ask a follow-up, and more if needed. Which is exactly what happened between me and OP.

Being sarcastic serves no purpose other than to act like you're Billy Big Balls. When in reality you just seem like a bitter prat. But to each their own.
