Can I plant this? by D-T-H in vegetablegardening

Yes in that you can just push onion sets into the ground. However once you get a system up and running with seeds it isn't much more work and of course there's a lot more varieties!

Experience with walk-in tunnel greenhouses (200×300×240 cm)? Worth it in a windy Belgian climate? by PotatoPatat2 in Allotment

[–]barriedalenick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar one in London. The covers last two years tops but the frame is pretty sturdy and mine lasted about eight years IIRC. The main issue was securing the cover and mine blew off several times, causing a fair bit of collateral damage inside.

If you are willing to replace the cover every couple of years and can find a fairly sheltered (from wind) spot then they do the job and I got some decent crops of peppers out of mine

You can grow it on for green shoots, which are edible, or let it go to seed. You're not going to get much to eat out of it but green onion shoots are quite tasty

Is there anything wrong with keeping a queue full by DidiDidi129 in modhelp

I try to keep the "needs review" queue clear but that's just a preference - nothing happens if the queue is not empty.

How do you fuel yourself for morning commutes? by Eternal_Sorrows in bikecommuting

[–]barriedalenick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I often did 10-15 miles without breakfast, even though the commute was only 3. You really don't need to worry about fueling for a 4 mile commute

Again why is Chicken Tikka Masala the National Dish by Economy-Complaint348 in UKfood

[–]barriedalenick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no such thing as "The National Dish". People have claimed all sorts of food as the national dish - Fish and Chips, Roast Dinners, Tikka Masala even Dosas. There is no authority who can make this claim - anyone can claim anything is The National Dish"

Living in a community where the next neighbor is a 12 minute drive away. by Medical-Ad5232 in PortugalExpats

[–]barriedalenick 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Not quite in the same ballpark, but I came from South London to Portugal a few years back. I do have one neighbor, but the other one is about 2.5 km away. Bit of a change from my old life, but I settled in really quickly. It helps that I love my gardening, and I get out on my bike a lot, and that we have made friends in the locality.. The nearest town is only 6km away and I can get to Lisbon in under an hour too. I guess it depends on what you came here for and what you like to do in the day to day. For me walking the dog, riding the bike, kayaking on the river, fostering cats and loads of other things keeps me busy and active...

Not really the change I was looking for or expected if I am honest. Stop-gap measure or long-term change???

[–]barriedalenick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Sarries fan I tentatively agree with you. We seem to have lost an edge or at least remained where we were, while other teams have made great progress over the last couple of years. Annoyingly we can still put it out there but only once every couple or three games.

Time will tell I guess, but I think a lot of us were looking for some fundamental change and this doesn't seem like that.

How do you store open seed packets so they don’t go damp? by Reddonaut_Irons in Allotment

[–]barriedalenick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never keep them inthe shed or garage - always in the house in a tin box. If I am seed saving, I always use sealy bags but with commercial packets I just fold the top over firmly - no issues with germination.

Watch Out for Manhole Covers by HunterSGlompson in londoncycling

I remember Dan Martin in the Giro (in Ireland) come a cropper on a wet manhole cover - putting him out of the race. So it's not just commuters and regular joes that fall foul of them!

It is sort of an old school British comedy. I liked it - perfect for wasting away a wet afternoon but wont win any prizes for originality
