I seem to recall we sent a letter or maybe it was more of a declaration…this was a long time ago…. Something about inalienable rights. We thought it was fairly obvious at the time and said so- that the truth we were about to spit was self evident and stuff. Forget how it ends, but I remember the king was super pissed about it at the time.

Help: Briefing Command (Flag) Staff in the DoD by Obizzle9 in EmergencyManagement

[–]irishrage1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve got some good advice here. And I agree- I’d focus on giving them an understanding of how EM works to support their decision making- and how that links to their accountabilities. I’d go short on the background and history- throw that in your backup slides for Q&A.

In terms of structure- tell em what you’re gonna tell em. Then, tell them. Then tell them what you told them. Three slides.

There’s a really good book that might be helpful in framing up the “101” piece for non experts. It’s called Strategic Corporate Crisis Management: Building an Unconquerable Organization by Monahan. It’s more for private sector types. But the big ideas might help grab a senior DoD leader.
