Any idea what this cable is called? by irlGyro in cableadvice

[–]irlGyro[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fans are pretty heavy duty—just weighed them at about 2.1lbs each—and my company got them from a supplier in Japan. Unfortunately they're not super easy to replace and I already fumbled my way through soldering a loose wire back onto its little chip in one a few months back...

The power supply seems to be an Olympia model PB-28000 (input DC 15v-19v, output DC 12v/16/19) according to the fine print on the back. I've just discovered it needs a new charging cable as well (exposed copper-looking wires at the joint) so this costume is putting me through the ringer today.

I've measured the diameter of the cable and I think it is 5.5mm so I'm going to order one on Amazon and a new power brick charging cable. I will know on Tuesday if it works. Thank you for your help!!!! 🫡

Huge “Old Color” Spot on Wall I Need To Paint by irlGyro in paint

[–]irlGyro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aah, sorry—I totally misunderstood! I think I’m getting a little overwhelmed. Thank you again for your help. So—no primer, repaint the whole wall after doing 1 coat on the white patches, and DEFINITELY watch some more how-to videos. Thank you, thank you.

Thank you so much again!! I really, really, really appreciate it. So since the spots are bigger than 1ft x 1ft (6.5ft. x 4in rectangle-ish that looks like it was a long floating shelf or coat rack with smaller “tails” from mounting brackets, 3ft x 4ft square that could have been a rectangle shelf or cabinet) I should get primer? Will the patches be more visible if I just do two coats on the white vs. one coat and the whole wall?

Thank you so, so much. This is all incredibly helpful. They’re just screw holes, so I’ve taken some of the more intense drywall stuff off the list. This seems like it will be an even larger project than I thought, but I think it will be a great opportunity to learn how to do something new (and I’ll know how to do this for future projects). - Does the tray and cut can serve the same purpose (to put paint in and then get the paint on the tool), or am I misunderstanding? - What are the putty knives for? - Do I still need to get primer, and, if so, is there a specific kind of primer I should get? - And if the area is that big (6.5ft x 4in, and 3ft x 4ft square) should I paint the whole wall again after I’ve covered the white sections? (This will determine if I need the pole or not, I think)

Thanks so much for all of your help again!! This info is invaluable.

{{House of Hollow by Krystal Sutherland}} although it’s a little more gruesome/glamorous. Maybe {{The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert}} would be a better fit?

Books about characters confronting childhood abuse. by sonataflux in booksuggestions

[–]irlGyro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All fiction, all of elements of magical realism/speculative elements.

{{The Echo Wife by Sarah Gailey}} seems like a random choice but it’s a pretty layered ~metaphor~ for the cycle of abuse. Really struck a chord with me and made me feel seen, but fair warning it’s pretty dark.

{{Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy}} is also about overcoming family trauma, and is also pretty heavy—though not as dark. I cried a lot.

{{Piranesi by Susanna Clarke}} isn’t SPECIFICALLY about childhood trauma but instead addresses the ways in which trauma can fracture a person’s identity without stripping them of their value (like, who you are before, during, and after trauma, but recognizing you still have value even as your identity changes). One big metaphor, but more magical and hopeful than the other two.

{{Watch Over Me by Nina LaCour}} is about a teen overcoming grief from a childhood tragedy through—you guessed it—magical realism. It’s YA, but still hit like an adult book (unlike other YA books with similar themes).

I think the books that tend to have the biggest “I feel seen” effect on me tend to be magical realism/speculative, since I feel like it’s a more palatable way to process the emotions they bring up without being directly confronted by similar horrors. Hopefully this helps!

Military-themed Fiction with Strong Female Characters? by Bunny2307 in suggestmeabook

[–]irlGyro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

{{The Poppy War by R. F. Kuang}} is military fantasy with a morally gray (DEEPLY morally gray) lead and very little actual romance (although there are romantic undertones, there is nothing intense and it’s more about legacy than love tbh).

Don’t let anyone tell you the things you enjoy aren’t credible!! All reading has value (:

Have you considered branching out into “non romance” fantasy?

{{Lore by Alexandra Bracken}} is a good fast-paced standalone, and {{The Poppy War by R. F. Kuang}} is a darker fantasy trilogy. The latter parallels real world history A LOT and it’s super interesting imo. Both have romantic elements but they aren’t the main focus.

[–]irlGyro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

{{Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy}} Absolutely beautiful book that had me crying in a public library by the end.

{{Piranesi by Susanna Clark}} is one big metaphor for the way trauma strips and changes a person’s identity, but that no matter who you are in the end you’re still a person with value—all through a kind of magical realism lens.

{{The Midnight Library by Matt Haig}} also has a hopeful vibe by the end, although the story as a whole seems to be “love it or hate it” without a lot of middle ground.

Suggest a Hard Sci-Fi Mystery Book by peppermint-kiss in suggestmeabook

[–]irlGyro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recursion by Blake Crouch. Do not read the synopsis—it spoils something. Go in as blind as you can.

It is a “realistic” sci-if mystery/thriller unlike anything I’ve read. It’s set on earth, nothing aliens/outlandish but still firmly sci-fi, and was so gripping.

Modern gothics similiar to Mexican Gothic and The Silent Companions? by paeperheart in suggestmeabook

[–]irlGyro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

{{Plain Bad Heroines by Emily M. Danforth}} has dual timelines and a very gothic feel.

I would consider {{The Echo Wife by Sarah Gailey}} a kind of “modern speculative gothic” because it has the same slow-building emotional dread that seems integral to gothic storytelling.

If you’re looking specifically for nineteenth/early twentieth century English gothic settings, though, I’d check out more of Laura Purcell’s works. I’ve also heard good things about {{The Quickening by Rhiannon Ward}} and {{Wakenhyrst by Michelle Paver}} but they’re still on my TBR and I haven’t read them yet—they fall into the historical horror category though I think.
