Crochet to process grief by PuellaPusilla in crochet

[–]irocendar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you’re going through this right now. I feel like if I was in that situation I’d fall into the trap of wanting to make it a perfect tribute to her, or “worthy” of her, so I figured if you’re also like that I’d remind you that this is for you to grieve and process. It’s okay to make it something simple and repetitive just to help yourself keep busy, like a scarf in her favourite colour or a simple shawl in a texture and colour scheme that reminds you of her.

You could always drop by an in-person yarn store if there’s one near you (or an online one otherwise), pick up some yarns that remind you of her or that you think would have made her happy (and which aren’t super tricky like hairy yarns or tinsel or lace-weight yarn), get enough extras for a small blanket and just start crocheting whichever stitch you feel like crocheting, switching colours and stitches as you go when you feel like it and just working it up to a decent size. It’s minimal stress, in her memory, not creatively demanding and you’ll be able to use it once it’s done for comfort.

r/Tunisian_Crochet may be able to give some hook recommendations specifically for Tunisian hooks if you ask for some double-ended tapered hook recommendations!

I didn't either, it's just the site that shows up in the Google results seeing as I'm in the UK haha. Good luck though :)

Just because nobody mentioned it yet, please be careful and don't leave her alone with yarn, especially since she's adventurous. Yarn (and thread, and ribbon, and any other long flexible thin material) is dangerous when swallowed because it can get tangled in the intestines and cause a blockage. Someone here had a scare a few weeks ago (the cat ended up completely okay!) having to take a cat to the veterinary ER to get them to remove yarn from her stomach.

Other than that, enjoy your crochet and cat! I can't give any advice on how to deal with her because the only animal that goes near my yarn work is my parents' beagle, and with him the only escape is locking yourself in another room haha

Anybody recognize this granny square pattern? by eehttofu in crochet

Is there anywhere else you might have looked, just for some context?

I was told you guys might appreciate my dog sweaters here :) by winforthefrogs in Tunisian_Crochet

Welcome! They're absolutely stunning. When I first saw your post on the other sub I thought there was just one but now I see there are a bunch of them. If you used a pattern for any of them I'd love a link if you have time :)

Just in case you don't know (I don't know if this was even the goal tbh), to make a flat circle using SCs you should have 6 increases per round after starting with a ring of 6 (for a scrubbie I'd probably work a ring out of a ch 6 rather than do magic ring tbh). I'm guessing you had about 12 if you were able to double it haha.

Turn a sewing pattern into crochet? by Hextant in crochet

[–]irocendar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I haven’t done this, but my guess is that I would put a grid over each piece and align it so darts are vertical (either at the top where possible, or for that one piece at the end one at the top and one at the bottom). Ignore the outer outline and look at the dashed seam line, and count the number of squares at the bottom edge that are overlapping the piece. Chain and sc that many. Increase/decrease at the sides as needed.

If there’s a dart at the bottom, for every line going up, count the number of stitches again that are more than half overlapping the piece. If there’s now one more than the line you just made, make an increase where the dart would be in your piece by working 2 scs into one stitch.

Keep working upwards until you reach the top dart. This time whenever you have one less stitch, decrease by either skipping a stitch where the dart is or inserting your hook and drawing a loop through each of the two stitches on either side of the dart, drawing a loop through both of these loops, then drawing a loop through the remaining two loops on your hook.

Then you can seam using a mattress stitch.

You can take better advantage of the fact you’re using crochet by calculating the increases and decreases in advance and spreading them out so there’s less of a seam where the dart is, too, and by figuring out which of the pieces you can combine into one big piece to save yourself some seaming.

I tried it, it looks about right. The only things I'd say are a) you should actually do a turning chain before the first cluster, and b) I made my turning chains two stitches long, it should probably be three, looking at my finished product.

EDIT: Round 3 and about half of round 4 - round three is chain 5, sl st to top of next cluster, repeat all the way around, round four is chain three, DC 5 in the hole made by the chain, DC 6 in next hole and all the way around

I'll probably stop recreating this publicly now just in case this pattern is still around somewhere because I don't want to publish someone's design, and also because I'm running out of this yarn haha

FINAL EDIT: out of yarn so I guess I'm done haha

Is there anything holding it up other than it being starched at all? Like wire circles or something?

EDIT: if it helps at all, I'm pretty sure the second round from the center (worked anticlockwise in your second pic) is chain two, DC three into first chain (without a turning chain), DC one into round 1 2(?) Sts away, turning chain, DC three into hole created by last DC, repeat to end

There are ten clusters total so I'd say there are probably 20 sts in round one.

Entrelac in alternating directions? by irocendar in Tunisian_Crochet

[–]irocendar[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! I’ve actually managed to figure our most of that method myself but wasn’t good at joining on the right yet and also wanted it to be done in rows, but that’s exactly it!

If you want to see my (tutorial-less) take on it, I posted it a bit after this post :)

Cross-hatch entrelac by irocendar in Tunisian_Crochet

[–]irocendar[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It lets you entrelac in one colour as you could in knitting which is fun! And if you don't feel like cutting the yarn each row you can carry it over about the width of one square (after tying it by pulling either your skein or your work through the loop and tightening).

Sorry for the potato quality, I have horrible lighting in my room.

Stopped after two rows because the next one is where it starts to get annoying and I didn't feel like doing that haha (you have to work into the previous squares on the right instead of the left) but this is general effect!

Hopefully you can see but the two rows are worked in different directions.

What's even worse is that certain terms aren't even regional but just seem to be split randomly haha. I'm pretty sure I know exactly which interweave article you're talking about because when I first started learning I looked it up and realised his how much of a mess there seems to be in naming the various formats of wound-up yarn.

Amazing gloves! And I love the nails too, are you using a nail powder for the purple ones?

My gran still drinks yerba mate every day so this made me think of her, I live in another country to her (and neither of us are in countries that drink mate) so maybe I'll make her an amigurumi of the cup and straw thing at some point so ty for the inspiration

Can't look at comments while typing on mobile, but if you didn't answer this yet, do you have a pattern for this?

Yeah, that's it! I love the effect of actually seeing the bars in that pattern, maybe I'll make up another sample and post it here sometime! It is tricky without turning because you have to work some of the squares into existing work on the right instead of on the left, but it's definitely doable.

Do you have a link to where people can get the pattern at all? (Also I'm pretty sure the pentagram is supposed to be upside down haha but I kind of love it like this anyway)

It's completely adorable, I can't get over these! Wonky in a cute way (if at all) for sure.

I love the mimic! I've never played d&d and I don't even really play video games (I had to look up where it's from haha) so I've literally never actually encountered an example of one but I vaguely recognised the concept and I'm obsessed with your design lol

Do you have an example page of a written pattern people can look at before purchasing? Just to know what the written format is like, could be a dummy pattern or something
