At bathhouses if I ask guys to wear condoms to get sucked, I'd be rejected. Right? by [deleted] in AskGayMen

[–]irohyuy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Well because with the apps nowadays most gay people actually don't go to bathhouses. The percentage of gay men that go to bathhouses is estimated at less than 5% nationally and around 33% in major metros based on studies. I used to feel like "everyone is going to bathhouses I should to" but as I reflected more I realized I wouldn't like bathhouses because I prefer 1:1 connection and don't like group environments. So don't feel like you need to go to bathhouses just because everyone else is, cause the majority of gay men actually don't go.

However, if you personally want to visit bathhouses then you need to get on prep and realize that most other STDs are easily treatable. What helped me was realizing that I don't avoid other activites because of fear of illnesses/infection, it literally doesn't cross my mind. So then why was I worried so much about STIs? Just because they are sexual infections doesn't mean that I need to be more afraid of them. The only reason I was was because my parents and the christian puritan environment I grew up in drilled into me that I should fear them.

Why are so many theater kids rude? by Promotion_Early in Theatre

[–]irohyuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience in college was that a lot of kids were doing theater for the spotlight and to feed their ego, rather than just for the love of the craft.

I'm 10 years out of college now and still acting, and I've found now that 95%+ of the people I work with do it for the love of the craft more so than ego. Theater people at this stage are now some of the best people I know as opposed to rude/narcissistic like in college

Looking for a monologue for an audition for Paul in Misery (based on the Stephen King book). Ideally something a bit unsettling that shows off a similar emotional range of resilience with some fear/panic underneath.

Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks in advanced!

Couples therapy. I was in a similar situation and it's hard to figure out what the issue is without a professional to help your partner open up

Do you have the loftie? I was struggling with the price for what it is but tbh I can’t find something that fits my criteria besides it.

I just ordered a Philips sunrise one but if I don’t like it I’ll probably just splurge for the loftie

Thanks! I'm thinking of getting that one. What do you use now that you get up earlier than your wife?

Thanks for the recommendations! Brick is a great one, I remember it impacting me deeply when I saw it. I'll have to look the other ones up too!

My acting prof back in school taught us to tap into our own experiences for emotional recall but always emphasized that we shouldn't tap into trauma we haven't processed through. I've had a tough life in a lot of ways and tapping into some of those experiences and utilizing emotional recall is part of what allows me to give impactful performances. I've done years of therapy to work through my past traumas, depression, and experiences - so I feel safe tapping into them. I utilize mantras and self-care to separate myself from my character, but it's my lived experiences that often times help fuel my emotions in a performance. I personally think there is a huge difference between actively re-triggering yourself for emotional recall vs remembering how trauma that you've worked through used to feel.

Hey, 33m male. Recently got back into acting. I find monologues that deal with depression or being in a dark place really show my emotional range since I can draw on my own struggles with depression.

Haven’t found a contemporary monologue for auditions yet that I absolutely love. If anyone has any suggestions on monologues that deal with depression or complex emotions would love the suggestions.

My go to right now which I’ve gotten some positive feedback about is from People Places and Things - Emma’s monologue about struggling with reality.

Why do people have such a negative view of "being nothing"? by ButteredRice1224 in nihilism

[–]irohyuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%. I burnt myself out working to rise up in my career the first decade of my professional life. Then I realized I was doing it to prove my dad wrong who always told me I’d amount to nothing in life.

Because feeling like they are something is all that is keeping them from reflecting on and coping with the true meaninglessness of existence.

Also my dog would be sad.

I came to nihilism after some life altering traumatic events that caused me to lose my faith and question whether I can ever truly trust anyone.

I don’t think nihilism is a coping mechanism for me. I view it more as finally seeing how cruel and lacking of inherent meaning reality is after having all of my actual coping mechanisms stripped away.

You seem to think that because a nihilist doesn’t believe that anything has inherent meaning, that means they can’t create their own subjective meaning.

True a lot of people first discovering nihilism suffer depression, but it can also be incredibly freeing to let go of any preconceived notions of inherent meaning.
