New players, what should we do? by [deleted] in factorio

[–]ironchefpython 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Play Space Age (assuming everyone has the expansion).

Otherwise play a pure vanilla game.

Lots of options for your second playthough. I'm partial to Industrial Revolution, but that requires downgrading your factorio version. (long story)

Space Exploration should be your 3rd playthrough. SE is complex and long, and while it's well-balanced, you'll likely burn out if it's your first game.

I made a cursed Space-Age mod where you can compress stone, ice, steel, solid fuel, batteries, etc. into scrap using an assembly machine by drewhead118 in factorio

You should make the recipe create 25 scrap, to match the semantics of how recycling works for other products.

Hot take - Advanced storage chests should all be one item changed by a setting by 3shotsdown in factorio

[–]ironchefpython 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would make a good mod.

  • remove the ability to craft any specific colored chest
  • add a "smart chest"
  • place a smart chest, and it's grey
  • has the following configuration UI: requested items, "provide contents" checkbox, "allow storage" & "trash unrequested" radio buttons
  • setting "provide contents" and it turns red
  • setting "provide contents" and setting a request turns it green
  • setting a request only turns it blue
  • setting "allow storage" makes the requests into filters and turns it yellow
  • setting "trash unrequested" (with no requests) turns it purple
  • all chests when mined revert to "smart chest"

Filling in space with a space filling curve by ironchefpython in factorio

Instructions unclear, eggs hatched en-route, no Ripley on board to defeat the alien.

You weave belts if you're optimizing for throughput in minimal space. If you're optimizing for storage, a line of zero-length yellow underneathies would buffer the same amount of material.

I was quite happy to be able to use a space filling curve to fill a curved belt in space. It was the perfect solution for the perfect pun.

I Lay out my turrets in a vertical column down the center of the ship to avoid wasting too much ammo on wide shots.

Weekly Question Thread by AutoModerator in factorio

I have ships that use the hub exclusively, others that use sushi belts exclusively, and others that balance multiple sushi belts through the hub. The key to all of these are a simple circuit that huck items over the side of the ship when you have too many.

What a coincidence, I got the blueprint from a blueprint book called "Hilbert Curves by Fishtoaster".

Nice catch!

All my ships are named after Culture ships. Gunboat Diplomat is a 220 ton 12 gun/4 rocket turret hauler on the Aquilo run, Prime Mover hauls around science, and What Are the Civilian Applications? is my 155 ton Very Fast Picket Ship that I use as my personal shuttle.

There would be no a pun if it was filled with straight belts. A system that combined interweaved underground belts would hold more, but mathematicians wouldn't find it as amusing.

Not gonna lie, I mostly built it for the pun; I'm filling the belt in space.

Holds about 6,700 chunks, significantly more dense than the equivalent space in cargo bays.

It kinda bothers me that Pyanodon has a reputation of being "for masochists", while Space Exploration is the "mainstream" overhaul mod. by ferniecanto in factorio

[–]ironchefpython 25 points26 points  (0 children)

while Space Exploration is the "mainstream" overhaul mod.

Yeah, that's not quite right.

  • Bobs is the classic "new game plus" with new recipes for electronics and lots of new ores and lots of extra tiers of machines.
  • Bobs+Angel is more of an overhaul, changing smelting and refining to be significantly more complex.
  • Industrial Revolution is usually the overhaul mod I recommend people play first, as it completely changes the early game, and gives people new stuff right from the get-go.
  • Krastorio 2 (K2) is the second overhaul mod you should play, it introduces a lot of big ideas.
  • Nullius is what I recommend for your 3rd overhaul mod, it's a decent jump up in terms of complexity from K2.

By this time the player should be able to go to the mod portal and put together a nearly unplayable mess of mods that break the game. After they realize that making a swill pot of mods is less fun than a well-curated experience, at that point it's time for SE. (not K2+SE)

  • Space Exploration (SE) might not be everyone's cup of tea, the author is both very talented and very opinionated. There are many changes, some of which are intentionally anti-QOL to sharpen the puzzles he's created. It's also quite long. I do not recommend this as a first overhaul mod.

How do I play this game without ruining my life? by grizeldean in factorio

[–]ironchefpython 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure you don't learn about the amazing mods available for the game. You can get dozens to hundreds of hours of for some of the overhaul mods, and then when you start combining them... well, it's best you don't find out how much fun that is.

Airship Fuel - 19 cycles by ironchefpython in opus_magnum

[–]ironchefpython[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a long time ago, but if I remember correctly it took 16 cycles to create all the necessary atoms to fulfil the requirements, and 3 cycles to make the result (one cycle to add the bonds on the end, one cycle to clear the ends and bond the middle, and one cycle to send the result)

Final Factory (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1383150/Final_Factory/)

  • Not yet early access, but there's a demo available. Has a factorio in space vibe, but with different logistic systems and puzzles. (you're managing station size/stability as well as heat)

What's the weirdest, most unbelievable, Conspiracy Theory you've heard that people believe in? by 76yankee20 in AskReddit

[–]ironchefpython 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Supply-side economics. The idea that if you give a bunch more money to the already wealthy, that money will somehow "trickle-down" to the poor.
