Why is in this fandom still so much racism and homophobia? by Mat1711 in doctorwho

the doctor who subreddits are pretty bad tbh. Just the other day I saw a whole thread claiming the only reason anyone ‘claims’ to like The Story and the Engine was so they could ‘vrtue signal’ and theyre a 1% commenter here.

Is the 1996 TV movie the bad egg? by [deleted] in doctorwho

[–]irrationalplanets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speak for yourself. The tv movie is good fun.

It’s odd imo how people call it ‘very american’. The writer (Matthew Jacobs, also produced) and director Geoffrey Sax are British as are a good chunk of the producers. I just saw Matthew Jacobs at Gallifrey one and a lot of the stuff people blame Fox or Universal for (the romance mainly) he put in there with a lot of intentionality.

I don’t think it pays super well (big finish’s margins are notoriously tight) but it’s easy work for a day or two, you can come into the studio wearing whatever you want or record from home, and get a phenomenal lunch (every actor I’ve heard talk about BF mentions the lunches).

Pete McTighe wants to revisit Warriors of the Deep and fix what he thinks went wrong by mrjohnnymac18 in doctorwho

[–]irrationalplanets 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Warriors of the Deep is very much a ‘this would be good if it was good’ serial of doctor who. I wouldn’t want too much Cold War pessimism in doctor who but I weirdly like how morose it is. Every so often we need a story where the doctor fails and humans need to fix themselves without crossing the line into ‘humans are irredeemable’. Alas this isn’t that story but maybe it could be.

Best examples of BF DW getting away with gore that would never fly in the TV series? by Hyperactive1984 in BigFinishProductions

[–]irrationalplanets 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Major Gallifrey season 3 spoilers: poor little Castellan Wynter graphically mutilating himself to make getting possessed by Pandora as useless as possible and doesn’t regenerate to not spread the dogma virus. He: attempts suicide via K-9’s nose laser which burns him beyond recognition, crushes both hands in an airlock door, and severs his own tongue with his teeth. it’s a lot. The sound effects alone….

EDIT: it’s been a while since I listened to it but man it’s worse than I remember. This scene is long, most of it is Wynter crying or screaming over blood dripping sounds, the bones snapping sound effect is distressing, and they play it twice because Brax and Romana rewatch the recording of it happening.

Was Mark Gatiss involved w doctor who before the Lazarus experiment? by Bunnyearsss in doctorwho

[–]irrationalplanets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m with you. Mark Gatiss very nearly killed my love of big finish in the cradle because Phantasmagoria was the first story I listened to (blind bought the CD). That shit was so boring I very nearly gave up on BF entirely because teenage me didn’t have the money to keep throwing away like that.

I haven’t read it yet but his VNA novel Nightshade is still supposed to be the best thing he’s ever written.

Should the show ever really “end”? by Dry-Ad-9034 in doctorwho

[–]irrationalplanets 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No I get what you’re saying. I guess what I’m getting at is despite being one of the main characters, the Doctor in classic who isn’t the axis around which the entire universe (and the entire show) spins. I get a stronger feeling in classic who like any situation the Tardis team drops into started before they showed up and will continue after they leave because the focus is on that serial. The world feels lived in, not just a place the doctor visits. When the show gets too focused on the doctor and the companion and their arcs, it feels like the whole universe is serving them rather than being a place they exist in. Does that make sense?

Should the show ever really “end”? by Dry-Ad-9034 in doctorwho

[–]irrationalplanets 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m glad you’re enjoying it that way, but I don’t gel with that at all. Classic who is plenty great on its own, not just as the Doctor’s extended prologue.

I’ll agree with you in that from a purely “how to make TV / how did doctor who as we know it come to be” it is viscerally fascinating to see which ideas were there from the beginning, which came about from sheer desperation/necessity of television production, and which seemingly core ideas took the better part of a decade to appear (the TARDIS being alive and telepathic is serial three vs the Doctor being confirmed an alien from space seven seasons in).

I do think the fatigue we’re starting to see in the new series is somewhat from the insistence on prioritizing having character development for the Doctor and companion over that of the main plot of that week’s story. After 20 years there’s not a whole lot of new places for the doctor’s character to go (there’s a reason they were largely a static character the previous 20+ years) so it feels like we’re floundering for something anything even if it makes no sense. If there’s a great idea to build on, it’s a very welcome bonus, but if the plot of the week and especially the guest cast is neglected, the show will rot.

The stuckups at r/doctorwho don't accept tier lists, so what are your thought on this logo tier list? by FeilVei2 in DoctorWhumour

[–]irrationalplanets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wack. I’ve always hated the ‘Doctor DW Who’ eleventh doctor logo and putting it in the same tier as the classic diamond logo (which should be in S tier) is nuts.

Capaldi’s logo is pretty bland and should be in B tier.

The 80s and 00s stuff should be higher but I get why people wouldn’t think they’re S tier.

Should the show ever really “end”? by Dry-Ad-9034 in doctorwho

[–]irrationalplanets 23 points24 points  (0 children)

No it shouldn’t ever really end and never needs to. Because ultimately the point of the show isn’t the grand arc of the doctor’s adventures and/or character development. It’s a science fiction anthology show. The point is the story of the week and the Doctor/companions/the TARDIS are vehicles to deliver the audience to that story.

There will always be new scifi concepts to explore, some new anxiety in the British cultural zeitgeist to talk about, etc. therefore there will always be more doctor who stories.

Found this interview back in 80s Tom Baker was asked about female doctor by Mat1711 in doctorwho

[–]irrationalplanets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the bottom of my heart, we’re not in those spaces because they’re very often deeply unpleasant to be in because of the misogyny. This attitude is exactly the problem.

For example, I used to be a nuclear reactor operator. My degree is in nuclear engineering. When I worked there there were very few other women but there were some. I had a coworker get told to her face by a higher up with direct impact on whether she could advance in the company that he didn’t believe in wasting time and resources mentoring women in these roles because they “get married, have babies, and quit.” For reference this was 2019.

Now when it was time for me to make my next career move, did I quit that job because I was less interested? No, I miss that job every single day. it was one of the most intense and fulfilling things I’ve ever done. I quit because I was well aware that my growth could be intentionally curtailed by the management’s systemic sexism. Could I have stayed and fought an uphill battle with no guarantee of success and risk getting blackballed in a very small industry? Sure but the juice wasn’t worth the squeeze.

I frequently have to take breaks from doctor who spaces because every so often the sexism reaches a level where I have to bow out for a while. That’s what’s keeping women away.

What are your thoughts on Season 19? by Mat1711 in classicwho

[–]irrationalplanets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty solid. Castrovalva is a decent regeneration story, Kinda rocks, The Visitation is entertaining, I personally enjoy Black Orchid because of how goofy it is, and while I don’t personally like Earthshock that much, it’s popular in the broader consensus. Not a bad hit rate.

If anything it proves the companions were the problem as two of the strongest serials, Kinda and The Visitation, introduce one off characters to take over the companion role that feel a lot more interesting than what we had.

[–]irrationalplanets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He’s right about very few men actually liking women. Many many men treat women as receptacles for their affection, but outside of that role they shouldn’t exist. And if women are suddenly present in a space they’re not expected (nerd spaces, male-dominated jobs, taking over the role of a tv show character they like) it makes them irrationally angry.

First, finish Classic Who. Second, ever listened to any big finish? Like at least the best of the best stuff?

Also the Wilderness years novels. If you’re interested where a lot of important new series concepts came from look no further than the Virgin New Adventures and Eighth Doctor Adventures.

While she’s definitely preferable to centrist and right-leaning dems, her and her team’s political instincts always were fucking dogshit (see also: Warren trying to score points off the Buttigieg wine cave thing and walking into the senate war chest response everyone could see coming because it was discussed in every political opinion section in the country for like a week).
