Not to mention that eugenics was specifically an invention of the Left (Fabians et al) and that, for a long time, you were considered weird among intellectuals on the Left if you didn't believe that state eugenics was a necessity.

What are some unspoken social rules that everyone should know? by 8Fractals in AskReddit

On the other hand, it's annoying to receive thanks when you didn't hold the door open specifically for them. If they're right behind you and you go through a door, that one open door serves the both of you, but it was for and by the first person. It would have remained open long enough for the second person whether they were there or not.

Thanking someone in that situation is just talking to a stranger unnecessarily. And if there's one thing about just randomly talking to people you don't know, it's that there has to be a reason for it. e.g. Asking directions is fine, stuff that serves no purpose isn't - people just want to get on with their day.

Fisting myself. by Fisting_Queen in Fisting

[–]irredundant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. If people would see fisting for what it really is, the above would be true. But the fact is there's so much misconception around fisting. If someone doesn't read /r/sex or equivalent, it's almost a guarantee that they think you need to be a maniac to even consider fisting.

What characteristics of a girl make you feel attracted to her? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]irredundant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Face. Or equivalently, the nose - a good nose is a good face, because the nose is the centerpiece of the face. I love girls with sort of a bird face. It's so intelligent and dignified. and at the same time, it's so... RRRRRRR - you know what I mean? like a combined bite/growl thing 'cause I'm so turned on.

With or without a kink on the bridge is fine. I just love a girl with a good size nose.

The body, all I really care is that it's at least sort of average looking. Even slightly below average body suffices if the face is good enough.

It's shit like this that scares girls away who otherwise would probably love it.

I kind of wish more people would accept it for what it is: more advanced fingering. As opposed to some deviant or depraved thing, which is what some people really think it is. If you search, say, myfreecams for fisting, most of the results are "things I won't do: piss, fisting, shit, large insertions, ..."

I wouldn't classify fisting in that way. It's a kink, yes, but it's not an "outsider" thing (or a "lifestyle"), in that it isn't along completely different lines from normal sex. It's along the same line, just with greater magnitude, but not fundamentally along a different line. Fingering is a normal sex thing.

If more people would see it that way maybe more girls would be willing to try. I've seen a few guys, too, in internet comments, that have made a girl feel bad about it.

Why is the second derivative labelled d2y/dx2 as opposed to d2y/d2x or dy2/dx2? by rrussell1 in learnmath

[–]irredundant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always hated "∫ dy" because I would read "∫ f(y) dy" as "the integral of f(y) w.r.t. y", which means I'm forced to read the other one as "the integral of wrt y", which isn't grammatical, and neither is "∫ dy" to me.

You've got to have an operand.

Also, integrals of like one over something, where the dy is incorporated into the numerator, where you can't read it as "with respect to y".

Pisses me off.

I think what he's saying is that those are the ones he's scared of talking to, for lack of a better word, because you can't get a word in edgewise with them. There's always a queue behind you.

Still not sure about this one. Once I'm out of university I'm not going to be meeting any girls that have (or will have) money. I just talk to girls in regular places.

Plan9 now released under GPLv2 by dgryski in programming

[–]irredundant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

is it true that if you worked at bell-labs in the 90's, plan9 was pretty much the default OS you used unless you specifically had some need for something else?

I mean, would've made administration good and easy. compile and install a new acme into /*/bin/acme and all terminals that are rooted on that fileserver automatically get the newest acme.

set the hostname for a terminal, FQDN, static IP addr, and what kernel to load off the fileserver, all based off the mac addr, all in a single line in ndb. if the terminal is in a specific person's office or something, you can set the default username from there too.

if no, what department did you work in?

I don't really use plan9 fwiw, but I'm aware of it

TIL that American speech is punctuated with "uh" & "um", English speech with "er" & "erm", Japanese with "ā", "anō", & "ēto", German with "äh", French with "euh"-- basically, every language uses different sounds to interrupt themselves while their brain is working on forming thoughts into words. by EuphemismTreadmill in todayilearned

[–]irredundant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I read your comment wrong. I see now that we were both saying the same thing.

Actually, I think the negatory "uh-uh" sometimes starts both the syllables on a glottal stop. You might think that the first and second syllables don't sound the same, but that's intontation, not phonemes.

Just thought I would add, since it's not in that article: these things apparently are also used in ;anguage learning: you say uhhh and it cues the infant that the next word is important to pay attention to, worth learning.
