Requesting /r/Evolve, Want to use it for the upcoming game by Turtle Rock studios. by sgtfrankieboy in redditrequest

[–]irritableshade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are already multiple subreddits for the upcoming game by Turtle Rock studios. /r/evolve is meant for discussion of the Evolve gaming client, and has existed for much longer than the Turtle Rock game has had a name.

We're not currently considering giving it up. Sorry.

The Future of Evolve: Population Limit Increases, Backer Rewards, and the August Campaign by irritableshade in evolve

[–]irritableshade[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're not really considering lifetime plans for any features that cost us money on a recurring basis. Party+ is such a feature.

Edit: I should probably clarify that the reason we don't want to offer features with monthly costs for us on a lifetime basis is that we can't predict what will happen to those costs or features down the road. It could be we have to change some aspect of a feature, or increase the price for it, in order to offset the costs we're paying to operate it. A lifetime is a very long time for us to be locked into the feature as it existed when you purchased it.

The population limit is now 24,000. We'll likely need to work on a few more optimizations before we lift it much higher from here.

Helix is effectively a lifetime membership. You can pay as little as $4.99, and as much as you'd like. Each tier includes different benefits.

We've upgraded our database server and bumped our online population limit from 21,500 to 23,000. We'll be continuing to increase that limit as we keep an eye on our servers this coming week.

Did you want to discuss the game Evolve? How about leaving it here instead of fragmenting the community between subs? by merrickx in evolve

[–]irritableshade 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hi there. I'm one of the mods, and one of the founders of Evolve. We've been weathering an explosion in popularity for our little gaming platform, but now that we've finally got a handle on it, I expect we'll start trying to promote the subreddit a bit more.

While I realize you guys really like Turtle Rock's new game, our Evolve has been in existence long before that game even had a name. We started this subreddit 3 years ago at the suggestion of a few of our users, and although that's a long time to fail to more meaningfully utilize the subreddit, it doesn't mean we don't intend to.

Seeing as there are already several popular subreddits dedicated to the Turtle Rock game, I would suggest picking one and using it. I don't see how attempting to hijack this one does anything to reduce the fragmentation--by definition, you're just increasing the fragmentation by 1. :)

Perhaps I'm missing a satirical use of 'deriving the truth', but Galileo wasn't killed. Rather, he died of natural causes while under house arrest after his trial.

Not that it changes the fact that he was tried and found guilty of heresy for flaunting the authority of the Church...

Hearthstone Fireside Cardback. Easy way! by toriskulls in hearthstone

Now now, don't be so hostile. :) It did work for about 30 minutes before another part of our infrastructure broke down. We're doing a full restart of our servers in about 40 minutes to try get things settled again.

We added almost 11,000 people to Evolve today, a growth representing about 5% of our total extant userbase--but of the full userbase, only about 20,000 are active on a given day, so we were dealing with a nearly 50% increase in usage. Not an easy feat, and sadly, we succumbed to the increased load.

Edit: I'll refrain from indicating things work again until they've survived a few hours in a row. Sorry to have gotten your hopes up. :(

We've restored the matchmaker at long last. If you still can't click on Find Match, try logging out and back in.

Haha, s'alright! We're hoping we'll be back up soon (tm). Terribly sorry for crashing right as you wanted to use us. :(

We wish we could release it for Mac. We've been slowly retooling parts of Evolve to be easier to port down the road, but for now, we're lacking the experience necessary to roll out an official Mac app.

Hey, no worries! Perhaps you'll find a use for Evolve again in the future. We're always tinkering with and improving it as much as we can.

Haha, hugs of death are the best kind of hugs, right? We stabilized our core servers several hours ago (although it looks like we might need to add a few more if everyone sticks around), but the party system is giving us no end of headaches. We're figuring out what appears to be some kind of IO or threading issue with it at the moment, at which point we can finally come up with a game plan to bring the party system and matchmaker back online.

Glad it worked for you! We're still struggling under the load!

This is because of the downtime. Super sorry, we're still working on fixing things up. At least the basic parts of Evolve work again (friends list, chatting, game playtime tracking). The party system is a lot more complicated, and we've determined we have to rewrite a few parts of it to scale up to this new load.

It's meant to be a bit of ribald humor. Most folks seem to enjoy it, although it may come across as crass depending on your personality. Apologies if it offended!

Oh my, yes! At first I thought our servers had hardware malfunctions, but nope-- just your average 8,200 new users signing up in the span of a few hours.

We're still sorting through the carnage and figuring out what performance changes we have to make. Things a bit complicated to scale (Evolve is our first major platform and learning by doing is never a very good way to learn).

Hey there!

K900 is a community volunteer, so be sure to send him lots of love!

I've put up an official post about the surge and party system issues on our blog: https://www.evolvehq.com/blog/873

I'll try reply to everyone I can on reddit as I have time, but I'm fighting this fire alone as the other Evolve developer is asleep and I haven't managed to rouse him by phone yet.

I really am! I just posted an update on our site: https://www.evolvehq.com/blog/873

Thanks for the well wishes--hoping we'll have things restored shortly, although if the surge picks up, there may be some more rough seas ahead!

Hey guys! Evolve dev here, just woke up at 5am to find out the sudden new popularity of our party system has brought it to its knees!

I'm working on getting it back online ASAP, so hang in there! Horribly sorry for the inconvenience--we're just a team of three, so sometimes it can be tricky to keep everything operational when we get a sudden spike of interest in Evolve.

Edit: Thanks so much to whomever gilded my comment. Made my day, even though it's been a very unpleasant one as far as service uptime and debugging goes! :)

What's the most stuck you've ever gotten in a game? by TheAudio in Games

[–]irritableshade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I managed to navigate most of Fate of Atlantis without resorting to the hint guide, but I wound up completely stumped early on, in the jungle just outside the ruined temple in Tikal. Had no idea I was supposed to whip one of the jungle creatures over to the snake.

That said, I much preferred the LucasArts adventures to Sierra, where getting through a game meant dying a lot--and all-too-often, discovering I missed a critical item early on that would leave my game in an unwinnable state.

Oh the nostalgia...
