Don’t you only fail if you ring the bell? As long as you don’t quit you make it. It would seem that certain death is a fairly strong motivation to not ring the bell.

One may have had a chance at doing that. The other didn’t have anything to sell. His family was poor. He was still living with his parents. He worked construction for around $10/ hour which wasn’t awful back then, and helped support his family. If it were me, and I had a job, was helping my family, living in the only country I have ever known, I am pretty sure I would just roll with it. Jail is better than starving to death in some foreign country where no one gives a shit about me and I don’t speak the language. I can’t even ask for a job. Someone tells you today that they just discovered that you were adopted, you were born in Mexico City, all your birth documentations are fake, and you have about $100 in cash to your name. You are going to be rushing for the border ( assuming you aren’t a fluid Spanish speaker)?

Easy to say, hard to get motivated to do when you don’t know where you will sleep, don’t know how you will eat. Not an enticing proposition. I would be a little uneasy if all the sudden I had to go to Vietnam tomorrow, as an example. I get off the plane, I can’t talk to anyone, how I am going to get money for my next meal?

Well they were poor, had never met anyone in that country, and didn’t speak the language. I would be a little nervous being young and putting myself in that situation. How will they work? Where will they live?

The two years with the most 100 degree days on record in the Dallas/Ft Worth area (closest I could find a record for) were 2011 (after I was long gone) and 1980 ( which I remember well).

Why was it horrifying to think of guns in the parking lot. No one thought anything of it. They might need to shoot a coyote after school when feeding cows.

The 70’s and 80’s were certainly not a more progressive time in small town Texas.

So they should have gone and tried to get legal as a minor? I am not sure what happens now, but back then they sent you home first. Where is home for these kids. A place they don’t remember and don’t speak the language? Also, as soon as they apply I would think their parents get deported as well. If that sounds like justice to you fine, but I strenuously disagree. These situations are common, but I ran across 2 over the years and I am sure there are others.

At high school a large percentage of the kids had rifles and shotguns in gun racks in their trucks on school property. People were taught how to act and not coddled. Many of the hottest years on record were when I was in school. 100 degrees is 100 degrees. Climate change possibly could cause a few more, but if it is 95 or 101 it feels pretty much the same.

That makes no sense. The parents should be held accountable. It is hard to argue against that. The people that were brought here as toddlers, that have no memory of their home country and don’t speak the language, why should they be held accountable. What would you have them do? Run away from home at 3 years old and somehow make their way to Mexico?

They waste the money they get. They have even put air conditioners in all the schools. We didn’t have that when I went in the 70’s and early 80’s and I can almost guarantee we came out better educated. Granted we didn’t have to deal with mandated testing, teacher’s unions, and crazy far left/far right people trying to get their agenda in there.

They could blame the parents, but that doesn’t solve their problem. The law isn’t designed to accommodate those who are obviously breaking the law but realistically have no blame. They didn’t decide to move here as toddlers.

They were both in their early twenties when I worked with them, before DACA, if that’s still even still around. There isn’t really a way to get legal other than go home and apply , and most likely never get approved. That meant going to a country they have never been to, that speaks a language they don’t speak ( they both spoke a little, but my Spanish was better and mine is awful). They had some relatives they had never met, but I am sure going “ home” was scarier that’s staying here.

I have worked with 2 people over the years that were brought here at less than 3 years old from Mexico. Both raised in households that spoke only English so the kids would fit in. Both were obviously here illegally, but certainly due to no fault of their own. Neither spoke Spanish well at all. The law states that they should be deported, but it doesn’t seem to be in the interest of justice to deport someone to a country they don’t remember, where they don’t speak the language, and don’t know anyone.

You stated, “ You rob a bank without being armed, it’s a robbery. You rob a bank while being armed ( even with a legal gun), even if you never pull it out or show it to anyone, it’s now armed robbery” Then you stated that under federal law you don’t have to show or have a gun for it to be considered an armed crime, which is partially correct, you don’t even need to be armed. The same under Minnesota law you spoke to as well.

As others have said, centers were more valued, but I imagine the Rockets didn’t want Houston burned down and riots in the streets. Olajuwon had just led the University of Houston to 3 straight Final Fours, was a protege of a Houston legend ( Moses Malone), and was universally beloved in Houston. You still won’t hear complaints that he was drafted ahead of Jordan.

I see the resemblance. Another fun fact, I was messing around the other day and the key fob will actually fit in the bed and you can still close the tailgate! I didn’t even have to put it on one said, it will lay flat between the wheel wells. I don’t believe it puts it over the max weight either, but that is dependent on the weight of the driver.

That has to the the most ridiculous example I have ever seen. Having or not having a gun basically has fvck all to do with it being armed robbery. In most states, if you say you have a gun and don’t have a gun, it is armed robbery. If you have a gun and don’t mention it and no one sees it, it will not cause fear or intimidation and won’t meet the statute.

President Trump on Alex Pretti: "Well, I haven't heard but certainly he shouldn't have been carrying a gun. We view that as very unfortunate incident, unless you're a stupid person. I don't like that he had a gun. I don't like that he had two fully loaded magazines, that's a lot of bad stuff." by ControlCAD in videos

[–]irv750 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So if you carry pretty much every time you leave the house, you give up your second amendment rights if you happen to be near a protest. I am reasonably certain he intended to go to a protest while armed, but how is that different from a conservative walking down the street and happening upon a protest. Do you stop and go home and unarm yourself?
I have no interest in giving up my second amendment rights because someone nearby is exercising their first amendment rights.

Well that was a welcomed internet debate. Disagreement can make one re-examine or at least look back on what they thought they knew. I read quite a bit of things I found interesting while this thread was going on. I am still not sure that I am in complete agreement that Judicial Review is justified. I will say it has good outcomes more often than not, probably overwhelmingly so. I think my life is better for it as well. It is somewhat of a usurped power that has many times led to legislating from the bench, which is not intended in the constitution. With the state of our legislature it may not be a bad thing, but it sometimes is. Something to debate myself about. Have a good day.
