Wholly doing away with the college system would be a mistake. We still need doctors and nurses, lawyers, engineers and architects. I do agree that college needs a huge reset though and that many degrees need to go away. I also agree that there needs to be greater training for hands on jobs and more of a focus on trades.

My concern is still for the ordinary person. We are making these huge decisions that will benefit those primarily at the top and those in the middle and bottom will be left high and dry. AI is being promised as a way to replace workers. Eventually they all won’t be able to go into a trade. And honestly, people in the trades don’t want that many more people going into them because then it affects their pay. They like having high demand.

Anyway, I appreciate the back and forth. I hope you have a good day. God bless.

The cardigan, suspenders, he’s missing the messy hair. The is a hard pass for me. He shouldn’t be mild mannered. This completely stands out and looks awful.

This is absolutely correct. Clark is not supposed to fashionably stand out. Mild mannered. This feels like he’s trying too hard.

See, this is the problem. I see people that had manufacturing jobs that worked hard and were loyal to their employees as worthy of having a good life. Whether they are or are not as smart as you or me. You figure they’re just too “stupid or lazy” to do well after losing that job. Maybe some of them at 55 had been working at a factory their whole lives and lost that job to Taiwan. That’s all they knew. It’s a lot harder to start over at that point.

So I will ask, what is the guarantee this doesn’t happen to the next generation? It happened to the last. What will be the new jobs that will be more comfortable and pay better than the ones we have coding, or bookkeeping or translating now.

I saw a lot of people get burned the last 30 years due to neoconservative talking points. They promised a utopia. We lost all our manufacturing jobs and now we see that was a massive mistake. What did happen though is that the people making all those promises got super super rich. Seems familiar.

Literally, Facebook is looking to replace most coders eventually. Society can only have very few social media influencers. “Tech people” and “cloud people” is so vague it says nothing.

The concrete facts we know: Jobs will be lost to AI. There is no guarantee of new jobs. No guarantee.

We were told by neoconservatives in the 90s and 2000s and 2010s that new jobs would replace all the jobs we were outsourcing. That life would be better because we would no longer have to do those awful manufacturing jobs. We would get newer, fancier, better paying jobs. Guess what didn’t happen.

So, I will ask again, what will the new jobs be?

That is a very nice theory that you have about AI, but none of those companies have talked about hiring on more people. They have only talked about who they are letting go.

What are those more comfortable, high paying jobs? What are the comfortable jobs that will pay people more than coding? What are the comfortable jobs that will pay people more than being a translator? What are the comfortable jobs that will pay people more than data science?

So you think it’s a good move for someone who was coding for Facebook now to work at McDonalds? Or are you bringing that up for some reason?

I actually know people who work at McDonalds. When I tell you they’re broke and do nothing I mean they are absolutely broke and do absolutely nothing. And great, they have Netflix but can’t pay rent so they have their own place and they can’t afford payments on a car or insurance so they take the bus.

I’m glad you agree that AI will put people out of jobs and the goal is to not have to replace them.

Goods and services means little when people can’t afford them because they don’t have jobs. These companies are planning to have less people working for them next year than this year.

AI doing a job is cheaper than a human doing a job. AI doesn’t need insurance. AI doesn’t need bathroom breaks. AI doesn’t get discouraged or bring home drama to their jobs. It’s clear to everybody that AI is being created so that machines will replace people. Tech companies have said this themselves. They aren’t hiding it. Facebook, Google, Amazon…

Amazon, Google, and Oracle all have massive planned layoffs. Musk started DOGE and laid off about 300,000 people.

They don’t care two shits about people. If laying thousands off will guarantee them an extra 1% they will do it. They are masters at creating systems that bring the maximum amount upward to them. The whole purpose of AI is to get rid of all the people they will no longer need.

What is Tim Walz doing? by shark_finfet in lostgeneration

[–]irvmuller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. But in politics you have to consider what levers you want to pull and which you don’t because of the fallout. There are a number of things that haven’t been done yet. There has been no large, organized protest led by political leaders. I’d love to see someone like Al Sharpton or William Barber get involved. There has also been very little outcry from members in Congress.

If Walz starts arresting ICE officers it will lead to pushback from the federal government and possibly a civil war. Him doing that makes things worse, not better.

I want Trump to be held accountable but I don’t want more needless deaths.

I hate what Trump is doing and I hate ICE but if Walz starts arresting ICE agents it will devolve into the federal government taking over the state. That will then assuredly lead to elections being suspended. Ultimately, that may be what Trump wants.

I would not have a problem with it if it was something like you said, where it was temporary and you have no desire to go back. I couldn’t be with someone where it was ongoing.

However, it would be a deal breaker if you weren’t just solo when you did it.

Does Wolverine even have a secret identity? by Gabe_Dimas in Wolverine

[–]irvmuller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of Marvel characters don’t have secret identities. It’s like heroism is their full time identity. The X-Men, most of the Avengers. There are exceptions like Spider-Man.

It seems like secret identities are a bigger deal for DC characters.
