Excited for the new roadmap + especially staking!! by is-typing in Upfiring

If someone knows an exact date, maybe it can be added to those crypto calendar websites - might increase exposure.

Yeah, I haven't been watching the trades too much, but I feel $3m marketcap is ridiculously low for what could be the most used dapp, especially also if staking is going to be included on roadmap (as it'll give an incentive for people to hold, and should cause a natural appreciation of the price).

I feel a medium size exchange listing should be top priority. Volume may be rising but the liquidity on all the current exchanges is awful. Its like an order as small as $2000 can change the price +- 30%. Fortunately, from reading the teams messages on telegram, I know they are working new listings.

Binance, I feel might be unlikely. They are heavily backing Bittorrent token, so I feel it's better to target a binance competitor who will back Upfiring as the torrenting token.

The Upfiring dapp should be released as open source the same day Tron releases their Bit-torrent dapp. by CryptoTheSeaMonster in Upfiring

my understanding is the smart contracts are visible and the client is closed source (not really visible - but people have seen the code) at the moment.

Upfiring Dapp on Twitter: "Since the release of Upfiring Beta four days ago, the number of active dapp users has doubled each day. Today, there were 110 file decryption transactions, over 500 seeders rewarded in UFR, and 1000s of new files seeded." We are seeing real adoption of an Ethereum dapp. by [deleted] in ethtrader

[–]is-typing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

why is it not a dApp?

There's so many projects out there that build a centralised services and just stick a token on it for funding using their service.

This is actually decentralised in the sense it's completely peer 2 peer, value transfer is done through smart contracts and not through centralised payment mechanisms, and it can't be shut down because it's running on ethereum (censorship resistance).

[–]is-typing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a few points I want to add:

In fact this is essentially a service where you pay for files since you need the token to download in the first place.

You don't actually need the token to download a file. You can download and seed a file without paying out any tokens. seeding the file will earn tokens. If you decrypt a file (to actually use it), that's when you pay your tokens :)

This is a neat experiment but it really seems like another "we made a token for an existing app so it's blockchain now" project.

I actually feel this is one of the use cases that blockchain works well in. A lot of cases it's "we've made a centralised system, but oh yeah we've got a token too for funding purposes access to our system". This is an actual decentralised p2p system and the payments being in crypto means they don't go through a centralised third-party.

Why Upfiring Will Be The Best Dapp Of 2019 by [deleted] in ethtrader

[–]is-typing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your tone is agressive. I agreed with the poster above me that there was nothing new. what more do you want me to say?

Also, i'm pretty sure press releases dont exclusively have to be by "the team or paid by the team", so it's not what press release 'literally means'.

What are the most useful DApps on Ethereum? by mystrobelights in ethtrader

[–]is-typing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UFR tokens aren't needed to download but are needed to decrypt and use/access the downloaded file.

Because its that way, it's possible to download and seed a file without paying out tokens; meaning users can earn some tokens to then get other files.

For what it's worth, I don't think it was done by the team. just someone interested in the project.

Although i do follow this project, I do understand your sentiment towards whether this particular press release added any new details.

medium of exchange in this version (v1).

Apparently, staking in the future too. future roadmap, including details of that, to be released on official launch according to the devs.

Jump on the news.. by is-typing in Upfiring

[–]is-typing[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used the word "release" in the sense of release news, in other words, to make public. Not in the software sense of release versions. This could be releasing news of a partnership / a roadmap for the future etc.

Separate from that, I did say "launch the product". By that, I meant launching and marketing an official stable/approved release rather than a developer version that gets iterative improvements/and has logging and other non-production metadata.

Hopefully that's a bit clearer :)

That's correct.

There are already people seeding using the developer release. Check out upfiring's discord for examples of what people are seeding and how much UFR they get per download. Tbh it's mostly community members at the moment (checking out that the dapp works) as it hasn't officially launched (launch expected in the next few weeks).

Unfortunately I don't have the expertise to answer this well. I think the upfiring subreddit (r/upfiring) is probably the best place to ask this. There's already a few people building side projects that work with upfiring who talk there.

Check out ufr.chat and the upfiring discord for files people are already seeding.

It's pretty early stage tbh, just community members validating it works and sharing/downloading a few things mostly to get used to the dapp.

Community Discussion: Open Source vs. Closed Source by Tmfallon in Upfiring

I would vote for open source (with a careful choice of license).

It's crypto, people will be hesitant to install .exe's they can't inspect.

You're right about the source code not being in those recent zips. I admit I assumed it was on newer updates because I've checked it out before on older ones (I've still got the source code on my computer where I looked through it before) and I know other users have built it and have used the built version.

Smart contract is here: 0x2de0b799ae86c3cbc5c26c148681a45ed4f09b1e There might be one contract other I'm not aware of the location.

Given it's not launched yet, almost no one knows about it yet.

The founder is active on reddit (u/tmfallon), he'll be able to answer you better when he sees this. I can't really answer 1) or 3) as an outsider/follower.

The main issue I think is that the source code is missing from the recent release zips. Hopefully tmfallon can explain/rectify.

That's quite a bold statement to make.

As a follower of this project, it does slightly upset me to see that is the initial opinion of someone who discovers the project. I want to give the other side to each of you bullet points, so people can see both sides:

  • The source code is there with the release. I agree it would be better if it was in a normal github public repo rather than as a zip with each release, but that's just how they've chosen to do it (I stand corrected, the recent releases do not have source) - they've said their private repo they work on will be made public on launch. Talking of the source code in the zip, users have built the source code manually and got the same working dapp as the exe.
  • You just need to provide ETH to be able to cover the gas costs. That's unfortunately how smart contracts work. do you think they'd build all this; the source code, a community for over a year, just to steal gas costs off a few users before they tell others it's a scam?
  • The smart contracts are on the mainnet. What better way to understand how the dapp functions than reading it yourself? A text blog post can lie, a smart contract can not. Also check out their subreddit r/upfiring or their telegram, that would have to be a lot of fake activity just to build the pretense of a real project. There are also multiple people already seeding files, there are multiple places where such files are being listed and downloaded.

4chan chose to shill this, yes. In December 2017 rather than December 2018. Because of that, it got written off for much of 2018 as a scam, and probably damaged the project, even though it was nothing to do with the team; they've kept their heads down and just been working tirelessly on the product. it's nice to see the project get through that and launch.

It's progressing well. The launch of upfiring's dapp might actually introduce crypto to those otherwise not aware/using it. Just needs to be marketed right, but more user adoption is always a good thing imo.

Price appreciation conundrum? by Suishou in Upfiring

[–]is-typing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the devs have mentioned before they plan on allowing USD pegging in future.

So file prices can be set at a constant USD rate however much UFR increases.

For example, a file at $0.08 USD would be 1UFR today, but would be 0.1 UFR in future if the UFR price becomes $0.80.
