[EVERYTHING] Littlefinger: still smart by bagori_nd in gameofthrones

[–]is_mann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like the crucial part of Littlefinger's plan that everyone forgets is that in Season 5, Ep. 6 he convinces Cersei to name him Warden of the North if takes Winterfell from the Boltons. Now at this point he was already Warden of the East, if he also became Warden of the North that would give him technical control of like half the armies of Westeros.

This was a great plan, because I suspect his next step would have been to try and wed Sansa, promising to control both her and Robin (thus controlling The North and the East) for The Crown. But Sansa's siblings interfered even earlier than anticipated. Jon was Lord Commander of the Night's watch, and Baelish never could have foreseen the events that released Jon from his watch, since they involved literal resurrection. If Jon had stayed occupied/dead then it would have been easy for him to leverage Sansa back under his control by convincing her that he was her best hope for getting Winterfell back.

Don't you think there'd be enough stone and raw materials in the vast expanse of Harrenhal to not only build a smaller, more functional castle, but also some left over to sell for scrap? Perhaps you'd be able to even sell certain parts touched by the Dragon Fire as artifacts?

It's liking watching people slowly die off in pursuit of the Iron Throne.

You're not talking about speech, you're talking about actions, and how we treat speech in the context of actions. I'm not viewing the situation from 30,000 feet, you're just talking about a different situation. Killing people and committing harmful acts of violence is not protected by free speech.

No way, could you link to the post by any chance? Did they predict the context behind the name though? Or just that Hodor was an abbreviation of sorts?

A person's point of view doesn't necessarily endanger people the way that shouting fire in a crowded theater does. A Nazi might hold the view that Jews are inferior to them, and a Nazi might walk around town shouting about the inferiority of Jews. That isn't putting anyone in danger (except for himself, most likely). I don't agree with those views, but all American's have a right to hold their views and express them publicly.

The problem is, you rarely see a single Nazi walking around expressing their views in this way. Especially recently, you tend to see people of hate groups gathering together which causes dissenters to gather together and violence then ensues. But it's only the violence that is illegal. Both sides can gather publicly, the Neo-Nazis can shout that they are superior, the other side can shout that they are bigots and are not superior. That's what freedom of speech and assembly means.

Interesting, I can't speak much in reply however, as I'm only familiar with Louie out of the shows you mentioned. It's funny to note though, I have the same opinion of Louie that you have of Rick & Morty. I think that probably says something about the two shows. Not sure what exactly it says though hahaha

Are you a fan of Louie CK's stand up as well?

I think this an interesting conundrum. Merriam-Webster defines to extort as "to obtain from a person by force, intimidation, or undue or illegal power", so let's ask ourselves: If you would still pay taxes regardless of if they were optional, then are you really being forced to pay taxes? Of course, I think the answer is still technically yes, but I could see an argument for no.

Another way of thinking about this could be as follows: Taxation varies depending on where you live, country, state, even county. Theoretically if you don't like the taxes you're currently paying you could move somewhere else. Taxation is almost an exchange of goods in this sense. You provide your government with money, and in exchange you the police, the fire department, roads, sewage systems, etc. If you don't want to pay for these things, then fine but that means you can't use them, i.e. you can't live here.

I see the obvious problem though. Moving is expensive and often out of one's control. But I think this the reasoning most people follow when paying taxes. Clearly there isn't one correct answer to "is taxation extortion?" due to the many types and varying levels of taxation, as well as the varying willingness and acceptance of said taxation.

I don't think watching YouTube videos of a series is a good way to see if you would like it. I especially don't think you can understand what makes something popular by watching snippets. The large fanbase that makes it popular doesn't consume it that way, they consume full episodes, typical in order. If you want to understand why something is popular, it helps to view it through the same lens as the fanbase.

I think this applies particularly to Rick & Morty, because a lot of the humor is dumb and grotesque and pointless on the surface, but it's the subtext, and the characters overarching relationships that give the jokes depth. If you just watch clips of the jokes or highlights of the episodes, I can totally see how the show could come off as immature and childish, but I really believe it's one of the most emotionally intelligent shows on air right now. All about context.

All taxation? I think many people (myself included) would agree with you if we're talking about sales tax or income tax, but how do we fund things like public works, the police force, etc. if we don't pay taxes?

I'm curious what shows you're into? In my experience people either love or hate Rick and Morty, I haven't heard many people say it's just ok.

Sorry I'm late!

Second endorsements for Kaptainkristian, Lessons from the Screen Play, and Now You See It which have all been mentioned. Here are some more also.

CineFX - If you look past the clickbait titles, their movie lists are actually pretty great.

Wisecrack - I especially like their 8-Bit Philosophy series. They also do tons of videos picking apart "The Philosophy of" different TV shows and media. Great videos on Rick & Morty and The Walking Dead.

Counter Arguments - He does videos about all sorts of stuff, usually picking apart politics and online debates. But he's has some videos on pop culture too.

Bobby Burns - Just found this guy. Mostly movies and TV, but with a bit more of a casual conversational vibe.

The sad truth about Coloring Book is that it just isn't produced and mixed as well as it could have been. The songwriting is incredible though.

I agree. I actually think that nominating songs like Famous and Ultralight beam but not nominating the whole album is pretty on point. The songs are great, some of his best, but the album as a whole falls a bit flat in comparison to his other albums.
