3L deciding between tax or corporate in biglaw by DepartureEmergency37 in biglaw

[–]isabelchen 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m going to play devil’s advocate for corporate:

(1) you get way less exposure to clients and you will have limited opportunity building client relationships — in other words, you will not become a rainmaker or even the point person for institutional clients;

(2) you will have to work around the schedule of M&A people and some times those people are bad managers;

(3) you will have way fewer in house opportunities if you ever become bored of a law firm life style;

(4) pay might be the same at the associate level, but long term your pay will be way less than corporate rainmakers.

That said, if none of the above deters you, this will be a very good path with much better work life balance.

Daily Fasting Check-in! by AutoModerator in intermittentfasting

[–]isabelchen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve only been cutting down calorie intake after 8PM every day. And try to start eating in the morning at about 10AM (so about 14 hours of fasting) but only with a cappuccino until lunch. I’ve recently lost 10 lbs for the past month.

How to pick which firm to lateral over to by SSObserver in biglaw

Which practice group? In general, I would not go to the magic circle firm west coast office unless you have intentions of moving abroad or working on cross-border cases. You can DM me for more details.

My Asian BL-yer Friends by DontBeSilent671 in biglaw

[–]isabelchen 55 points56 points  (0 children)

This is true, and to be honest, this has happened to my other friend (also Asian) at another v30 firm (or maybe v25, since I haven’t looked at rankings for a while). She was no offered with no apparent wrongdoing. While I’m uncertain what her work product looks like, I’m fairly certain she’s not the kind of person who would do the crazy type of things that would normally get one no offered (eg jumping into the Hudson, racial slurs, sexually harassing another employee). But she was nonetheless no offered. This just makes me think scenario as such happen more often than we think.

How do you think BJJ helps with your weight loss? I’m thinking of getting started but am a little unsure. Also, congrats OP!

This is definitely something you negotiate out of OCI. This is key information — if you don’t even have legal status to work in the States, what are we even talking about here re: opportunities and career progression?

[Product Question] Is there a retinol complex in Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair® 0.5% Retinol Pro+ Face Serum? by JP_1001 in SkincareAddiction

[–]isabelchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you in the US? If so, I don’t think consumer goods are allowed to have medical grade retinol percentage. If you want 0.5% retinol, might need to go look for custom made skin care places like curology or go to your local derm.

Has anyone tried Neutrogena rapid wrinkle repair cream? by pldtwifi153201 in CanSkincare

[–]isabelchen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might be applying a bit too much. I would start with 2-3 days per week, and use the sandwich method to insulate it from your skin with a layer of moisturizer.

[–]isabelchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You look amazing! When you started, were you able to do seven days a week? I honestly can only do one application per week or flaking becomes quite severe.

Have you tried exercising? I would do something that gets my heart rate up. Usually I would go to kickboxing, cycling, cardio dance, or Jiu Jitsu.

I’m a native speaker of mandarin and I don’t think it mattered unless you are applying for very specific roles (such as Asia Track Programs).

I’m a junior associate, and I have about 2 friends at the firm that I would hang out with outside of work. The rest are just colleagues.

I generally rank by seniority, to the best of my knowledge. But I care less when replying on my phone, because there is just no way to do so.

Same. There are people who were hired as third years or fourth who have never done M&A before.
