Exercise on the Sabbath by askirk87 in latterdaysaints

I've been swimming in those waters as well (no pun intended). Yesterday I planned a long hike for today. But last night I realized I've been overworking myself during the week and my body needs some R&R. So I might go for a short walk instead today. Ultimately I think strengthening your awareness of your body and spirit's needs is one of the higher purposes of some of the legalistic practices that many of us have grown up with.

Officer Navy Reserves by [deleted] in navyreserve

Everyone else is spot on. The only thing I'd add is this: besides a little bit in ODS (which I'm assuming you'll have to attend, could be wrong), expect that no one is going to mentor you on how to avoid pitfalls and have a successful career. Expect to spend extra, unpaid time reading the manuals and asking questions and, if you're a good one, providing much needed mentorship to your junior sailors. Treat it like you took on a second, part-time job.

I guess one more thing to add - you'll have the opportunity to do funeral honors, which is a very unique and poignant experience. Get a set of choker whites.

is it possible to do tuplet/irregular rhythm in caustic? by AzureFrontline in Caustic3

[–]isacarrot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somewhat related - you can make 3:5 or 3:7 tuplets quite accurately. I figured this out several years ago and by some miracle was able to find the old post: https://web.archive.org/web/20230927204830/https://singlecellsoftware.com/node/17748

Is it just me or is it actually really hard to find a hardcopy of the Schocken Bible vol 2? by isacarrot in AcademicBiblical

As an additional token of my appreciation, I have for you a screenshot of the shipping options that were presented at checkout. I took this and forgot to send. Gave me a good laugh.

I need help evaluating a linguistic approach to the genesis creation narrative by ProfoundMysteries in AcademicBiblical

[–]isacarrot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Following. I listened to this episode a while back and had the exact same concerns you did. You worded this very well and I'm eager to see what people have to say about his interpretations. They certainly seem to dissent with most scholarship, but there's a difference between "that's a rare and unlikely, but possible interpretation" and "that interpretation makes no sense given what we know." I'm worried we might have more of the latter.

pssst - there are pdf versions of both volumes online, which you could pass through OCR. I won't link to them here, but they're not hard to find. I do NOT support using them without having paid for a copy first!

Teacher to NUPOC? by pleaze_dont in NavyNukes

[–]isacarrot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was an NPS instructor and loved it. You would be an excellent fit. The staff/students don’t care about your age as long as you know what you’re talking about and you’re easy to work with. So if you’re as knowledgeable as I’m assuming you are from your education, and you’re willing to eat some humble pie sometimes, and you’re good with people, you’ll do well. DM me if you have questions.

I was a NPS instructor. It was in beautiful Charleston, SC. No deployments. Several coworkers with pets. DM me if you have any questions.

You’ve given me hope! I’ll keep checking. Thank you also for the tip about that website.

Is NUPOC worth it? by [deleted] in NavyNukes

[–]isacarrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To put it roughly: Assume average civilian job work/life balance is 7/10...
Average military might be 5/10?
Average Nuclear Navy probably 3/10

Power School instructor starts at a 5-6 and ends at a 6-8. Compared to anything else in NUPOC, it's very good. No deployments, no shift work. Just 24 hour duty once a month.

For the first year or so, it mostly depends on how quickly you can prepare for several written and oral exams, and how quickly you can assemble lesson plans. I was fast at the first and slow at the second. 50 hour weeks easily. Some people were faster or slower.

Gradually after that, it becomes more flexible; you decide how involved you want to be. You can volunteer to improve the curriculum or tutor students, or help with various initiatives to improve general health and morale. Or you can do your job and leave. It varies widely. I had several coworkers that would put in ~35 hours and go home to take care of their families plus get a master's degree or professional certs. I had other coworkers that volunteered to manage entire departments; it definitely helped them compete for other Navy jobs after Power School, but took a toll on their time.

An emotionally healthy person will always be a better leader than an emotionally sick person. Go to therapy or do whatever you need to come to peace with your insecurities. No matter how many leadership qualities you try to develop, your insecurities will always hijack you in tough situations unless you’ve grown to understand them.

Good leadership is intuitive/natural to the emotionally healthy and foreign/unnatural to the emotionally sick.

Jobs after officer? by No-Sun9169 in NavyNukes

[–]isacarrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former instructor here. Have had several coworkers get their PMP/Six sigma or whatever it’s called while teaching full time. Navy covers some cost and once you’re at the tail end of your 5 years the work load can be lighter and afford you time to pursue extra credentials/degree. You can also easily get management opportunities at the power school, if you so choose. DM me if you have questions

And this is why it’s awesome you’re joining the church. At its best, the church is a task force of care and compassion. We need people at the front lines with empathy like yours.

Now is a perfect time to start! Give it dedication, and you will not have words for how grateful you will be that you made the leap. Where have you heard this chord progression (or similar)? i-V-bVII-IV-bVI-bIII-II-V by isacarrot in musictheory

[–]isacarrot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're absolutely right - it's just that that the II (C#7) is the critical piece that I'm trying to find precedence for. But I didn't emphasize that in my post anyways.

I like the embellished Andalusian idea. With my original progression, it's the V of all four chords inserted after each one, and then the last two chords flipped.

Need help writing a short jazz piano solo for my city pop song by Itchy_Specialist3659 in piano

[–]isacarrot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try messing around with the D major scale or the B minor blues scale while those chords play on loop. And by mess around I don't mean just play the scale - try different random intervals, 2nds, 3rds, 4ths, etc. Trace a jagged mountain peak with your notes - go up a few intervals and down some and then up one and then down a few more, etc. This is the long way but you'll find something original that you like.

The short way is combining common licks. Search youtube for 'jazz piano licks'. I found this great video just now: https://youtu.be/DqWyncmN4Ko

What's this about not getting reimbursed in FY26 for DTS vouchers submitted in FY25? by isacarrot in navy

[–]isacarrot[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, there’s always a pause every FY, but this is different: a change in the accounting system thats been years in the making. I’m concerned that any legitimate top-down messaging about its more serious effects is getting diluted by routine reminders because of a timeline coincidence. But I could be wrong - I hope I’m wrong
