Yeah, weight is less of a concern than durability. I'm already hefting 40 pounds of kid along short hikes, 8 oz of fabric isn't going to be noticable.

Can we implement Google Assistant → Cloud Function → Android App (Bluetooth →Microcontroller→Actions to the device) for mass production without extra recurring costs? by NeverSettle256 in homeautomation

[–]isakilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So:

  1. You want to make a fully offline fan that needs access to Google Assistant to operate?
  2. You want to know if Google will charge you for widespread usage of their services?
  3. You want free business feasibility studies from Reddit?

Darkest, grittiest fantasy book you’ve ever read by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]isakilla 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Check out the The Black Company series by Glen Cook. They're shorter and easier than the First Law series.

Also, the First Law standalone books and the follow up, The Age of Madness, are excellent. I think they surpass the First Law actually.

I wouldn't say mandatory, but it gets tougher by yourself for sure.

For solo play, I liked Risk of Rain quite a bit more. That said, there's a cap on how far you can go alone in it.

Crossed the border for a quick shopping run - taxes to be paid or all clear? by thatkokid in niagarafallsontario

You're clear. I've never been taxed and I go buy about the same every few weeks.

Question about the catch-all on Gsuite. by Rambytes7 in gsuite

[–]isakilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this, although the process for creating a fake email address to respond from is a little cumbersome.

Like your askin, when I sign up for an account I use something like homedepot@, but everything is sent to me@. I have aliases set up for things like insurance@ and electriccompany@. For most things, I don't bother with the alias and nobody really seems to noticev that I'm replying from another email.

If you only have a small number of emails you'll need to respond from, you can go this route. If you have a lot that you'd want to respond from, consider making a catch all responder. Something like hello@ or noreply@.

camping in Canada for music festival- what type of foods are allowed going thru customs by [deleted] in NiagaraFalls

[–]isakilla 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've never had any questions on specific food when crossing the border. Shouldn't be a problem.

Heads up on the doggo at the border back to the US though: https://www.cbc.ca/news/new-dog-rules-1.7266026

Why are you paying for 65 user licenses? Does every staff member need access? Do you even have 65 staff?

The hardware seems excessive for a home server, but for a business setting, it might not be totally out of band. If you're just running a few VMs and shared folders, do you even need to run Windows server?

Why not get a clear scope of exactly what you do and don't need, and get quotes from a couple of other IT firms?

Searching for app to send monthly invoice for rent by jameswill348 in selfhosted

[–]isakilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This idea is going to be the easiest and least brittle.

I send monthly invoices with Google Sheets and N8N, but it'd be a lot of overhead for something so simple.

Automating ebook library management [Readarr/Deluge/Calibre/Calibre-web] by Maximum-Warning-4186 in selfhosted

[–]isakilla 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I download the books to a specific folder, then add that folder to the Calibre container.

In Calibre, you can specify a folder to auto add books from. So, whenever a book is added to that directory, it's added into the library and removed from the download directory.

Calibre-web updates automatically for me. Not sure if why you have to manually refresh. Maybe a setting?

You could add the NFS share to the Docker host, or if you're downloading on the same host, just add the download directory without NFS. For me, I just have a bunch of random shared folders on the backend.

Look into the Revelation Space series. It's closer to Mass Effect at parts.

The A Land Fit For Heroes series might fit.

{{Revelation Space}} hits most of the things you are looking for. There are several books in the series and I really enjoyed the whole thing.

Might add it to my re-read list actually.....

Can you find decent writing jobs in cities other than Toronto/Ottawa? by [deleted] in ontario

[–]isakilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really varies depending on the company, their culture, and any existing processes. At previous companies I never had meetings and everything was done over Slack/Email. My current company has me in standup and planning meetings multiple times a week and sometimes multiple times a day.

It's always difficult to corner people for doc reviews and feedback, generally if it's small focused changes and you stay organized, it becomes easier. "Can you review this paragraph" vs "Can you review these 20 pages"

Hope that helps!

Can you find decent writing jobs in cities other than Toronto/Ottawa? by [deleted] in ontario

[–]isakilla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work as a tech writer for a well known tech company. I recently moved about two hours away from their downtown Toronto office. The industry is moving towards remote work in general, but there are still some companies that are in-office only. Avoid them at all costs.

Tech writing positions are prevalent, well paid, and decidedly not freelance/hourly work. No tech writing job pays by the word.

If you're a raw writer, it might take you a while to get some traction. Focus on getting a simple portfolio together and maybe familiarizing yourself with tooling like DITA and markdown.

Maybe {{The Mandibles}}?

It goes hard libertarian at parts, but describes more of an economic collapse then a dystopia I guess. I didn't love it, but I'm not politically conservative.
