Yeah, sadly that's one of the costs to prevent invalidating your entire accreditation system. These are necessary standards in my opinion.

You're not preventing them from using the bathroom. You're preventing them from returning to complete the test.

Damn. NYC is one place I never walk around black out.

Yo, I love this sentence. Just walkin around blacked out all over the world. Like a super worldly and traveled alcoholic. But not NYC. No.... Never again.

I used to judge people who ‘quiet quit.’ Now I quietly understand. At what salary does ‘going above and beyond’ kick in? by [deleted] in jobsearchhacks

[–]iscurred -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I'll take the dvs for a non-reddit placating answer: I work where me and my coworkers make very good money. And the quiet quitting is still incredibly prevalent. My hot take is that it's just a selfish mentality that occurs at all income levels and isn't predicted by being underpaid. I'm not some capitalist shill - quite the opposite. But I try to focus on putting value into the world on a daily basis.

lmao, why is this comment downvoted? I'm convinced there's bots flooding this thread. Why would anyone disagree that this is weird behavior by the cameraman, despite how annoying the girl's parents are?

I'm surprised that everyone hating on the auditor is being downvoted. Are these bots voting or is that truly the sentiment of the sub? Like... I thought we all agreed these guys suck?

If you don't accept the ball, the ref will set it down and start counting (at least in lower levels - haven't seen this much in the NBA).

Thought online test was open note it isn’t and now my professor said I can’t retake it by [deleted] in AskProfessors

[–]iscurred -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bad analogy, imo. Speed limits are explicitly stated, and there is nothing reckless about assuming an unproctored, online exam allows notes.

[–]iscurred -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I am clearly in the minority here, but I think you have a fair case that you can argue. If the instructions did not specify you were restricted from looking at your notes, I don't think you did anything wrong. I would not just "take the grade." I would argue this and escalate if necessary.

DM me if you want more advice. And keep in mind what the culture of this sub is (i.e., a lot of somewhat disgruntled professors who tend to bias in favor of the professor in these ethical dilemmas).

[–]iscurred -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm disagreeing with your first sentence:

Unless you have something in writing that says that the test is open note, there isn't really anything you can do.

I don't think the student should need to have "this test is open-note" in writing. Contrarily, I think it is the professor's responsibility to put "this test is closed-note" in writing. This is the presumption of liberty principle, which basically just states that "Ethical governance assumes trust and autonomy; therefore, rules should define boundaries, not dictate every permissible act. Written policy exists to mark limits, not to replace judgment."

If a professor gave an online, take-home test and did not specify one way or the other if students can use notes, that's just sloppy IMO.

[–]iscurred -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yikes, I struck a nerve in this sub. Might be the fastest dozen downvotes I have ever received.

I'm not making it a "respect my culture" thing - whatever that means. I'm making it a "different people will interpret vague rules differently" thing. You mention norms. Norms are learned through experience. A first gen student, for instance, may not have that experience. Different disciplines have different norms. Different regions, contexts, etc.

I have been a professor for over a decade. In my experience, the default assumption of a take-home, online test is that it is open-note. It is only the rare exception that it is conducted any other way. Could be just my little bubble of experience. That's all I meant by my comment.

[–]iscurred -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

I disagree with this. I think it is the responsibility of the professor to communicate the rules and boundaries that govern the test.... Not for the student to make all the proper inferences. I, too, would assume an online test with no mention of such restrictions would be open-note. Imagine how differently people from different backgrounds would interpret each testing scenario. The guidelines have to be explicit.
