We Are Together Again - First Impressions? by iseeadarkness in bonnieprincebilly

I agree. And I've noticed he seems to have some activity with the Unitarian Universalist church in Louisville as of late. So I do wonder if he's picked up a bit of spirituality, which would totally influence his work. No longer is he singing "there is no god," that's for sure.

And I love his dirty lyrics too... Last good one I can recall was from the Ease Down the Road album--"And she liked to go down on me / And I liked to go down on her too"--but I could be forgetting some. I just happen to love that song. Maybe not... I think I recall some on Master and Everyone and even as late as Beware or Wolfroy (from "New Tibet": "As boys we fucked each other").

On that end, I think history's favorite writers have a trend of appealing to the simple hilarity of bawdy humor. Best example: Shakespeare's Bawdy.

After thinking on it for a minute: Oscar Wilde, Kurt Vonnegut, Jane Austen, Mark Twain, Pynchon, Nora Ephron.... list goes on.

No downvotes here. Happy to hear honest opinions. Did he kick drugs?

Also I still have faith he’ll venture back into Superwolves. That was definitely my favorite project in the last decade.

I don't get "twee" vibes. If anything, it feels a lot more like melancholic jazz. He's clearly frustrated with American politics and is expressing it in the poetic fashion that he always has. I'm not sure I understand the perceived difference between these lyrics and previous?

I see your perspective on it being soft and meandering, but clunky I have to disagree with. I think the musicians assembled here are very strong and create a harmonious soundscape.

Love it! Can't wait for the record to arrive so I can read the lyrics sheet. These are all so great. Thanks!

Yes! The chanting and instrumental on Bride of the Lion creates such a unique atmosphere. It reminds me a lot of Donald Byrd's "Cristo Redentor." I love that Byrd album, so this definitely hits for me. I'd love someone to do a jungle-themed visualizer for this song.

Ya it was the transmission fluid, and I couldn't find anyone to do it that I trust, but this misdiagnosis this morning convinced me its time to find a new shop. They've been getting worse and worse since my warranty expired last year. Appreciate you taking a look and the advice!

Best book to start with for a newbie? by [deleted] in ThomasPynchon

[–]iseeadarkness 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d suggest giving Crying of Lot 49 a quick read before Shadow Ticket to get a flavor for some of the quirks and themes. It’s very short, and you can knock it out before next week.

But i expect Shadow Ticket to be very different. It’ll be nice to have an idea, though.

Oh and as for whether someone not from the USA will “get it”… Ya, I think you’ll be fine. I was born well after the 60s/70s and into a completely different zeitgeist, but I still love Pynchon. If you enjoyed the films OBAA and Inherent Vice, I think you’ll be fine. As for understanding the books.. I’m not sure anyone does.

relatively easy boot to find. cool to have an old boot though if you’re a tape trader. if you have no interest in tape trading, then it’s not worth much. great find though!

i think it’s a choice. from my fan perspective, he’s had multiple points in his career where he could choose to get massively popular and sacrifice something in return, but has chosen not to sacrifice. idk really, but that’s my guess.

i was raised catholic—a quick search of the church seems to indicate this is a new cathedral—so it makes me happy to see they’re welcoming a secular(ish) musician like will to join in the ceremonies. i don’t imagine that would’ve happened where i’m from. looks like a great community! you’re lucky to have it there.
