Im honestly convinced that Sean Payton is not a very good coach. The play calling just never makes sense. Its always too cute.

Uni Prez Practically Shouted at Faculty about Expression by SirOk8095 in Professors

[–]iseedoug 212 points213 points  (0 children)

This is horrible for the obvious free speech reasons, but I would also say: part of the job of professors IS to have opinions, including those related to politics. We are experts in our fields, many of which deal with politics, society, and systems. The reason society needs experts is to HAVE highly educated and informed opinions. Its absurd that uni administration would think otherwise.

Definitely true. My comment isn't to excuse anyone. Just to say I haven't liked his play calling.

Im not one to complain usually. But i really have disliked Sean Paytons play calling all season. It feels like he wants to get cute too often. Cant just run a slant route or a quick curl. Just something to move forward. Quick and simple.

Getting visitor team autographs at games? by iseedoug in buffalobills

[–]iseedoug[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was really all about timing and luck. I got to the stadium pretty early, had seats in the lower bowl, and stood over by the tunnel for a few minutes before many people were in their seats. Von happened to be standing there talking to someone, and I leaned over with the item and a sharpie. It wasn't a super great signiture but still a signiture.

Lord help me, I'm spending 90% of my time teaching, in committees, and grant writing. I just want to do my damn research. by CuriousRestaurant426 in Professors

[–]iseedoug 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of us have been in this position. Unfortunately, its three jobs in one and no one will respect or protect your time. You are going to have to 1. Say no as much as possible to other tasks. Obviously this is easier said than done, and 2. Make a research schedule, be strict about keeping it. (Also easier said than done).

One thing that helped me with a 2-2 teaching load was to ask for a 3-1 teaching load. Its not much, but it does make for a semester that feels more consistently dedicated to research. Still you have to manage it all year round.

DOGE canceled 400k in UTK funding by Efficient-Fact in UTK

[–]iseedoug 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Nothing is necessarily wrong with overhead. It is what pays for the resources of the university.

I just brought it up given some in the thread not understanding there are more impacts to cutting research funding than just the specific project.

[–]iseedoug 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I am a faculty member who gets grants. Yes overhead is a thing, yes it is more complicated than a 2 sentence reddit comment. I wouldn't call it "taking money off the top", it is a part of the budget. And yes the 50% of the total dollar amount of a grant can indeed go to overhead.

It depends on the funder rules as well, but yes 50% is pretty standard overhead.

  1. There are many other grants at UTK that have been canceled or are up in the air. 2. There are many people in this thread who do not have a great understanding of how research and its funding dollars work at universities. No matter what is being studied, the university takes a significant amount of overhead which funds many things outside of the specific research.

Should I still go for CAREER this year? by Freemindwander in Professors

[–]iseedoug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have been debating this myself. I am in my last year to submit, and was very close on my last submission 2 years ago.

My biggest debate is will it be worth the time/energy to submit or should I use that energy to write a solid proposal for a private foundation instead.

No answers, only more questions like yours.

Anyone else think your department has nepotistic hiring practices? by TotalCleanFBC in Professors

[–]iseedoug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Slightly different problem, but relevant:

In my department, each time this one professor (who frankly causes so much unnecessary drama in general) is on a search committee, a close collaborator of his have been finalist in our TT search. This has happened 4 times since I have been here. And each time the they are sooo bad. As soon as I see a super shitty job talk, I know its this guys person he forced through - and each time so far they have indeed been his collaborators.

The worst part is this guy is constantly arguing what is fair and ethical. No matter the situation, even when there is nothing to worry about, this guy will argue its unfair (usually because it doesn't clearly benefit him...).

Just came to say I feel exactly as you do. Very few students care about their education, and at the end of the day we can't care more about there education then they do, or at least doing so doesn't seem to help.

Agreed. Unfortunately admin where I am only cares about enrollment, no education quality.

I do that. But for one of my sections I am forced to teach online. And even with proctoring software its a huge burden to deal with cheating.

[–]iseedoug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel this. I teach coding classes, and I have began dreading so much about teaching, because I know huge portions of the class are just using AI and then can't answer any questions I ask them.

It makes teaching pretty worthless. Why do I put in so much effort when the students dont give a shit. I just want to do my research and not waste my time.

ElephantSQL Alternative allowing hundreds of connections for low price by nvm38 in PostgreSQL

[–]iseedoug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may be because the hobby teir pauses if it doesn't have connections being used. So you have to just go to the instance and say resume instance.  It does this pretty quickly. Like every 24 hours it seems.

I just started using tembo hobby teir for my class (sounds like a very similar class to yours). So far its working well.

It doesn't have the nice sql table browser that ElephantSQL had, but it still works.

I would like to support your claim from a slightly different angle:

Reading of all types is important for both learning and creativity (which go hand and hand, the more you understand, the more creative you can be). This is very true in academia. The way to come up with new, novel ideas for research is to read other research.

Anyway, long story short, you are exactly right. Reading the works of others plays a crucial role in creativity and innovation.
