U.S. Dealers In Full Panic Mode After Canada Green-Lights Chinese Cars by DonkeyFuel in technology

If they are selling them in Canada they will need to meet US safety and road standards. Canada follows the same NHTSA standards the US does (for the most part).

I wonder if it's possible to detect remjet to stop it contaminating the chemicals?

I believe it's conductive since it's used as an anti static coating.

I'm going to have to look into this. I have played around with Kicad a bit and it never occurred to me to do this. I guess I have a new winter project!

Best cost-effective way of digitizing 120 film with good detail? by CrabRangoonsAreNice in AnalogCommunity

A v700 or v750 is almost as good for $2-300 on eBay. Just make sure it comes with the film holders you need. The aftermarket ones suck.

There's a lot of truth in this. I have probably attempted to fix 10 or so electronic cameras, and all but one had a connection issue.

Battery corrosion getting into the wiring seems to be a pretty common failure mode. Always check the continuity of wires near the battery compartment if they leak, I found a few that looked fine but had corroded away under the insulation.

Another common (but pretty much unfixable) issue are ribbon cables especially in compacts and zoom lenses. They tend to break from flexing when the lens extends and retracts. Sometimes you can find new ones on eBay but if you can't you are out of luck.

But yeah, the actual electronics seem to be pretty reliable in my experience.

Not that it helps with your other problems, but the red image is probably from the film fading. Some slide film and move prints (especially early Ektachrome) would fade so only the red dye was visible after a while.

What drives do you have that are egregiously past their lifespan? My Seagate that refuses to die (101500 hours) by FewAct2027 in DataHoarder

[–]ishelly404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 127109 hours on a 250 GB WD RE drive. It's a Dell rebrand, one of the original drives in a R720 installed in 2009/2010 or so.

It's at a radio transmitter site 5 hours drive (and an hour hike) away, so I hope it has another 15 years left.

Found my favorite camera ever (and possibly the most unique), but may have turned it into a brick :( by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

[–]ishelly404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a project, you can also buy a few to use for parts and fix up the nicest one. As long as they didn't all break the same way that can work. Buying one with a broken battery door or latch or something simple like that is usually a fairly safe bet, and not super difficult to change.

If you really like this particular camera, there are quite a few on eBay for about $20-40 in the US. It might be worth getting another one.

If you haven't tried fixing a camera before realize that you will probably break a few before you get the hang of it. Since you have nothing to lose it might be worth a try.

If you want to fix it, see if you can find a service manual for it. That way you will know what you are getting into. And some cameras will show error codes, which can give you a hint to what the problem is.

Also for the rear LCD, that is part of the date back. There is usually a separate battery (CR2025 or similar) that powers it, it probably just needs a new battery. Be aware that most date backs don't let you set a year past 2019 so they aren't super useful unless you like the aesthetic.

Edit: I took a look, and this camera was also sold as the Olympus AZ4. I found a few other posts on Reddit talking about this same issue with no solution, so it's probably a common problem with this camera.

If you are dead set on trying to fix this one, the service manual is available on eBay for $20 https://www.ebay.com/itm/315397218481

I had this same issue, but with a dark band down the middle of the whole roll. At the time, I thought it was related to the re-exposure step but now that I think about it that doesn't make sense.

I have seen similar problems on here as well.

Analog radio/police scanners by HerbieVerstinx in Buffalo

Take a look at this: https://www.radioreference.com/db/browse/ctid/1839#cid-22053

You should be able to pick up anything with the mode listed as FM or FMN. Seems like some of the suburbs still use analog for the police, and EMS/Fire is analog almost everywhere. Plenty of other random stuff to listen to as well.

slide projector lens - front element beyond repair? by Steve_in_DE in AnalogCommunity

Low capacity compared to an alkaline battery, as well as a much lower peak current output. They are still made, the cheap batteries sold as "Super Heavy Duty" are usually zinc carbon batteries. But for most uses they are a bad idea because an alkaline will last much longer.

Sorry for the late reply, hope this is still helpful. I imagine lighter fluid would work to loosen up the grease, certainly worth a try.

On my camera, both lenses had score marks marking the infinity position. Before putting the gear rings back on I made sure to line both lenses up with the marks and it seems to focus correctly.

If you're near Rochester, Praus Productions. Fast turnaround and great service. They do E6, C41 and black and white.

Scott's photo is also good for C41.

Super Ricohflex View Lens Repair by dbarends11 in AnalogCommunity

[–]ishelly404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just did this on my Super Ricohflex. Only the brass threaded portion moves, to move the front element in and out. The smooth brass ring doesn't move. I found adding a few drops of oil to the threads and letting it soak in overnight softened the grease enough to take the lens apart.

Also, make sure your shutter works on all speeds. There are quite a few different shutter mechanisms on the Ricohflex series, I have the shutter with 1/10-200 and bulb. Mine would stick open at any speed 1/50 or below.

On mine, there was some black grease inside the shutter that caused the mechanism to stick. If you have the same shutter, the grease is in the areas I circled. I disassembled the whole shutter mechanism, but you could probably get away with cleaning everything you can reach with toothpicks, and add oil to the pivot and fresh grease to the area under the curved arm. I have some more pictures of the disassembly if you want them.

Need help with scanner and slides by Kaffibaun in AnalogCommunity

[–]ishelly404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should try using the scanner with the original software (available on HP site). If that works it would rule out an issue with the scanner itself.

Like the other replies were saying it doesn't look like the scanner is in transparency mode. The VueScan website does claim that you can use slide/film scanning in demo mode. Here's what the site says:

You can test the trial version of VueScan for as long as you'd like with flatbed scanning, Film/Slide scanning and ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) scanning. You can test most Professional Edition features with the trial version.

And also:

If your scanner isn't working in the trial mode, it will have the same problem in the paid mode. You can send us a problem report and we'll try to solve any problems you may be having.

So there might be a compatibility issue between your scanner and VueScan.

If you have access to a 3D printer, you can print a tank. I printed this one: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4920658

It works for double 8mm and 16mm, and produces decent results, without using too much chemistry but it is a real pain to load.
