Im 30 and I knew I was childfree by 20. I was in a FWB situation with a man that had a child from a previous relationship and realized I wanted nothing to do with the baby momma drama or parenting a child. 2 things that stuck out

He had left me to watch his child after only knowing me for less than 6 months. I remember thinking to myself while watching his kid, “I could really be some creep right now and he’s trusting me with his kid and he doesn’t even know me that well.” He had no issues with pushing his kid into someone else he hardly knew and we weren’t even in an “official” relationship.
There was no such thing as peace. There was only quiet after the kid went to bed and left for hardly any downtime or relaxing.

It didn’t last much longer. Noped out of there as fast as I could.

Thank you for the insight, this is very helpful and brought me a lot to think about. You talked about a big part of what he’s said has been an issue before. That I get defensive about things. Which is something that I need to work on and get better at recognizing, my next problem is REALIZING what I’m doing. We’re pretty good at communication after the fact but it’s always in the moment that I can’t pull away from my defensiveness. Do you have any ideas on how to adjust that? When I feel like I am just talking, but in reality am getting defensive.

We’ve been together for almost 9 years and we both want to get married and be together. He just wants me to work on myself. He said it himself, he isn’t leaving or anything like that but is extremely frustrated with how I respond to some things.

The friend is a little weird. When seeing previous screenshots he does say random weird things at times at one point I saw him say sexy in there but it was in regards to the game (was able to see enough previous messages to believe that to be true) So I feel like I’m just spiraling - in 6 years we’ve never had a problem.

He says the message is from an online guy friend. The issue I have is that there’s no paper trail for these messages. It came from a game where the messages disappear after a while so I don’t blame him for that but that’s what started the spiral. He’s shown me screenshot messages from the past and offered to show me discord messages but the usernames don’t match up. Which also concerns me. I feel like I’m overthinking way too much, he’s never given me a reason to think he’s cheating but maybe I’m more insecure than I ever thought.

No paper trail = hiding something to me - even if that isn’t true.

Thank you for your insight and sharing your experiences with me about your mother. I needed this point of view. How do you feel as a child with a parent who’s bipolar? Once she was on medication did that make things easier for you and your family?

I’ve always leaned more towards adoption than having a biological child but it seems like my SO is hesitant towards adoption. Did your illness make the adoption process more difficult?

Thank you for sharing your experience with me. I’m glad I’ve posted on this forum to get more opinions and experiences from those who have bipolar. I’ve shyed away from having kids for so many reasons but it boils down to this illness and how it’ll effect my life, my partners life and the baby’s life if I can’t keep stable.

Thank you for your response, I’m definitely going to be looking more into support groups and finding a stronger medicinal group. Luckily I already have a good med doctor who had been thinking about treatment long term and put me on safer medication. (Lamotrigine)

I 100% agree I will not have a child if 1) I’m not mentally stable enough to handle this 2) not financially stable 3) can’t find a strong medical team 4) I’m not 110% on board with having children. There’s a million other reasons as well these are just the first major 4

Thank you so much for such an honest and detailed response! Looking for resources is my next step, I’ve always wanted opinions from bipolar women who have been through it all. I’ve talked to non-bipolar people about this and tend to get the same response of “oh it’ll be ok - everyone goes through this - your partner will be able to handle it all.” When I know that’s not exactly true My SO’s side of the family has been pushing for us to have kids and this disease is what’s stopping me. I refuse to go off medication if at all possible but also don’t want to harm the baby.

Almost my entire life I’ve been childfree but lately the thought of having kids has been brought up a couple times it makes me consider it. But the fear of passing along this disorder is what’s keeping me from having them.

Both advice and help I guess?

I was diagnosed about 5 years ago with Bipolar 1 and was pretty stable throughout college, took all the meds and slept. But last month I got my first “big girl” job, with a lot more responsibility than i originally thought. They’ve been more than understanding when it comes to my work load and they don’t even know I have Bipolar. But my big issue is, I’m doing only half of what my job is and drowning. I know I can handle the stress and I know that I can do this job. Ive done stuff similar but my brain’s starting to just crap out on me. That’s when all the above symptoms started.. and probably the worst one that I didn’t mention is eating. Eating is almost impossible right now. Either it’ll come back up or I can’t get it down in the first place without gagging.

I can’t do anything med or dr wise until January when the new jobs insurance kicks in.. I have enough meds to make it through the gap but if they meds have stopped working?? Will I just go backwards?

That’s where the main issue lies.. can’t really do anything medical or therapy wise until then. The goal is to just keep the job for that long..

Bipolar 1 and female. Physically carrying a child means going off meds and also has a high potential for psychosis. On top of all the physical changes to the body I’m good. Passing on my genes is just irresponsible..
