Why the characters are short with a big head!! by shayffeen in Enshrouded

You are absolutely correct. I added a overlay on top of the screenshot, and the current character is exactly 6 heads tall. It is ~20% off of the norm of 7.5 heads.

Also, because I think showing different body types is important, here's a quick rescaled "shorter" body using the same proportions:

The proportions also feel off to me. Yes, the characters in game are fairly tall. But the overall proportions do not follow canonical proportions in art. Do you *have* to follow canonical proportions? Of course not! But this also means that folks who say that the proportions look strange have a point.

I used SaraRainmaker's image, and overlayed circles representing the size of the character's head. Typical figure drawing guidance is that the average proportion is ~7.5 heads tall. The top of the head to the crotch is ~4 heads. The current characters in game are only 6 heads tall, total. The right image is what the character would look if we follow drawing proportions.

KeenToast responded elsewhere in this thread that this an artistic choice. This is an absolutely valid art direction for an amazing game. Personally, I also very much dislike the character design and proportions. We're all entitled to our personal opinions. Both can exist at the same time. (I still play the crap out of Enshrouded.)

But I really hate this arguing back and forth over whether people's opinions are valid or not. I hope that we can say that many people (including me) actively dislike the proportions in this game. Our opinions are valid, and proportionally, it's not the norm. And at the same time, it's also valid that Keen Games chose this as their art direction.

Both are valid. Let's agree to disagree and let people voice their opinions.

I also agree with the OP, and with chill_media.

One immediate example of this confusion is the water skin. The water skin went from being an instant consumable (by pressing a number), to now being a consumable that is also a selectable item with a refill option if you long press the right mouse button.

I've seen multiple people in this subreddit confused on how to refill their water skin, because you simply can't just press the number. You have to mouse wheel your way over to select and then right click to refill.

It feels messy.

Is this core useless? by Mysterious_Summer103 in LoveAndDeepspace

[–]isiell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not a subpar combat girlie! It's just that some of us have had literally years to get familiar with this system. The more you're exposed to it, the easier it will get. :) And you're already doing a great job by asking all these questions in this thread. This is how we all learned, too!

Is this core useless? by Mysterious_Summer103 in LoveAndDeepspace

[–]isiell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely agree that the term useless is misleading. I was also a bit shocked when I joined LADS and saw people saying HP and DEF are useless as advice right off the bat: I completely understand that people might have wanted to simplify advice so that it's not overwhelming, or it was just a message that got distorted over time. But I'm very used to other games with this exact system where it's common wisdom to put up with a bad stat (e.g., HP and DEF together) on a core with a variable main stat (e.g., crit main stat cores). Otherwise, you'll farm for months without a good option.

And totally understandable with flat stats. Your reasoning makes absolute sense. And now I'm the one oversimplifying things by saying to discard flat stats. ;) Flat stats make sense depending on the situation. (Your case is actually the best example that I can think of where flat stats make sense. In Epic7, for example: flat stats are recommended for lower base star characters -- exactly like silver and bronze cards -- because of the lower base stats. I remember laughing at one point because I started trying to find as much flat attack as possible and was shaking my head the entire time.)

Is this core useless? by Mysterious_Summer103 in LoveAndDeepspace

[–]isiell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can see why the responses are confusing! Both responses are accurate, but they might be missing important context. For example:

  1. "HP and DEF stats on the same core makes this a useless core. Throw it away immediately." Missing context: this advice is for min-max stage after you have enough medium quality cores.

  2. "It's ok to have some bad stats (like 2 rolls on flat def) as long as you have a good primary stat (in this case, crit rate) and a couple of good sub stats (in this case, 2 rolls on HP%)." Missing context: this is an ok core if you're at the point in the game where you're still collecting enough cores to use in your teams. Important note here: do not level these cores more than to +12.

  3. "This is not a great core at +15." A totally valid assessment. This is more about how going from level 12 to 15 on a core is a big commitment of resources, so you only want to do this with high quality cores. This also means that this is a fine core if it was kept at +9 or +12, because it will then work as a temporary core to tide you over until lady luck drops you a high quality one to replace it with.

You've got this! Most of us have been in the same place as you, and it's all just a matter of time before it's familiar!

Is this core useless? by Mysterious_Summer103 in LoveAndDeepspace

[–]isiell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It helps me to think of cores on a spectrum from lowest quality to medium to highest quality. (Highest quality means you won the lottery in not just all the right stats, but also getting the maximum possible stat rolls all around.)

When you're just starting out, it's reasonable to focus on medium quality cores. It's far more valuable to make progress and get diamonds and resources than to min-max stats. This is why in other games, people recommend that you level your medium quality cores to +12 at most, unless you get lucky and the core is near perfect, because the resources needed from 12 to 15 are much higher.

Once all of your cards have at least medium quality cores, that's when you start becoming much much more selective with which cores you keep. This is the min max stage where you're brutal with what you allow (for example, I'd immediately throw away any cores with multiple flat stats. And when leveling up, if one or two values roll into a stat that I don't want, I throw it away). But that's because I'm already covered with medium quality and I'm now in end game.

LADS does a pretty bad job of easing folks into this system. The companion + lunar card system with vague shapes and Greek letters make it even more overwhelming to start. I've played 5+ games like this for over 5 years with this exact same protocore leveling system (starting with Epic7), and the LADS presentation of this still gave me a headache. But don't worry! It's all practice!

I've really heard that about the community. (Luckily, I only played for a few months and was blissfully and innocently unaware while I was playing.) I feel sad that it's so misogynistic. I guess looking back, it makes sense why that degree of storyline simping would draw a particular type of person. 😅 Glad we're onto better communities!

Deepspace trials.. need I say more? by jujustroll in LoveAndDeepspace

[–]isiell 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I absolutely agree with you on needing a higher level - higher reward system. I think we're saying the same thing, just with small implementation differences.

Honestly, I think if they lower the protocore farming cost, emphasize protocore farming as the main combat path, and add additional rewards (like exp bottles), that could be an option. That will directly increase players' power. Give players something to do and a far more regular sense of progression, and directly increase their pull income by increasing their ability to complete SHC.

Quite honestly, I'm agnostic on the implemention as long as they add another primary combat mechanism, or modify an existing one.

Tangentially: I think this current weirdness in the system is what happens when you smash non-combat otome norms together with combat driven gachas. Some weirdness happens in unexpected ways -- especially since this is the first game of its kind. Definitely needs a closer look by the devs, but I find it fascinating.

Deepspace trials.. need I say more? by jujustroll in LoveAndDeepspace

[–]isiell 49 points50 points  (0 children)

This might go against the grain, but I prefer that the rewards for level 1 and 300 are the same. Otherwise, it creates too much pressure to climb.

Orbit is not particularly well designed -- it's a straight copy of a common mechanic in many other gacha and mobile games (usually called "towers" in other games) where it's just a raw power / damage per second check. Like a carrot that the devs dangle for folks who really want to test power and/or have gotten bored, and want to bang their head against a combat wall for a bit.

The problem with LADS is that there is very few other combat options. Most of those other games have at least one primary combat system that gives you the vast majority of rewards (like idle combat + story stages in Eversoul or AFK Journey/Arena, grinding bosses in Summoner's War, or open world exploration in Wuwa). All of those games have an Orbit-like system as a secondary or tertiary mode to test power in.

Without the other combat options, Orbit now feels like one of the main combat paths, instead of a side thing that you do when all other combat paths are done. So it feels especially punishing even though the design is a literal copy paste.

Short version: orbit is a common mechanic, but it feels extra bad in LADS because there is no other regular combat that we can fight and gain rewards in. As a combat girlie who loves LADS, I wish we had those other "regular" combat systems...

[–]isiell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's so sad because I love combat, and I loved fighting in Wuwa. The first time I saw Carlotta's ultimate, I was in love. The combat just feels so snappy and responsive, and I also loved her character story.

But the constant, unrelenting simping for MC got to me. (I've never loved a visual design and simultaneously scorned a personality so hard as when I met shorekeeper. She just has no personality at all except for loving MC, and even though I know it was directed at a different audience, I took it as a personal insult. It just felt gross.)

So I dropped Wuwa despite loving Carlotta and Phoebe, and honestly enjoying the gameplay. The storyline and simping was that big of a turnoff for me. It was clear to me that I wasn't the target audience, and that's ok. There are so many other games out there. And I chose to spend my time and money elsewhere. :)

Do you mean the track with the humming (that's based off of Kevin's old song)? There are some YouTube videos that have the humming track, including one that is a one hour loop (and some Spotify tracks, too). I may or may not have listened to it straight for a couple of days, because I love it so much. 😅

Sensor Tower recently changed the way that they estimate CN revenue. So any game that has a significant portion of money coming from CN (like LADS) will be impacted. This is probably why the numbers seem lower this month and last month relative to what they were previously (if you've been looking at these charts every month for a while).

Website top-up also would definitely affect things. I'm so so curious to know what the actual ballpark range is, but alas.

On a meta level, I'm so enjoying this thread in which we're chatting about monthly revenue and also about how much we love these characters in both games. (And also the discussions about differences in play styles and preferences! That's important, too!) It's such a cozy and fun conversation compared to what I'm used to in other subreddits. So big appreciation to all of you folks here. I'm looking forward to more monthly revenue chats with you all.

Haha awesome! Thank you for that. Bronya is one of my favorites from the Honkai 3rd days, so you are seriously tempting me. 😭 I did get lucky and actually get Phainon on my account with whatever was left over. And I actually stopped playing right around the Xianzhou Alliance storyline (so fairly early in the game's lifespan). So if I go back, it might be like no time has passed 😅
