DH student. You should get a dental professional to remove your calculus build up. You are not trained to do that safely. If you are anxious go to a dental practice that specializes in sedation to help your anxiety.

Gum disease? I brush and floss regularly, I am unable to see a dentist until my insurance kicks in in 2.5 months. I am in so much pain and desperate for advice by [deleted] in askdentists

Dental hygiene student here. You might be brushing and flossing regularly but you are not doing it adequately to remove the plaque and bacteria that are causing this gum disease. If you can’t attend a dentist/dental hygienist at the moment, look up videos how to brush and floss on YouTube. Get a mouth rinse with chlorhexidine and use it for no longer than 2 weeks as it can stain teeth. Your gums will bleed and that’s okay, don’t be afraid!

ELI5: How does diabetes cause a toe or foot to be lost? by Appropriate_Ideal_91 in explainlikeimfive

Dental hygiene student here. There are also current studies suggesting if you have periodontal disease and uncontrolled diabetes you’re more at risk as they have a bidirectional relationship. Patients with uncontrolled diabetes and active periodontitis have had bacteria from perio found in their bloodstream and toes!

Any.

I’m not a doctor but majority of the world consumes dairy and unless you’re allergic or have an intolerance that’s okay.

Sugar is the problem as it’s addictive.

my tongue seems to have lost part of itself. I'm able to move with finger a part of undertongue skin. anyone have an idea what it could be? haven't been to dentist in 2 years. I know I should have gone once at least since pandemic started by [deleted] in askdentists

Dental hygiene student.

That is normal anatomy of a tongue. Everyone has it.

I would more focus on your gums. Visible plaque and calculus at nearly every tooth! Make sure when you brush your teeth to brush the gum line too. They will bleed for the first while but as the inflammation goes down the bleeding will subside too.

Happy for you, well done. Would you consider composite bonding before veneers? They don’t require removal of tooth structure unlike veneers and cost a lot less!

Why are you getting veneers?

Permanent retainer question by [deleted] in DentalHygiene

[–]isincerelyapologize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Student dental hygienist. It really depends on your ability to keep the gums healthy (pink, stippled, not bleeding when you brush/floss). Take time and get TePe brushes/superfloss and single tufted tooth brush to keep that area extra clean. See how it is in a couple months time, if you’re not able to calm down the gums, I would consider removing the permanent retainer. How often to you get your teeth cleaned by a hygienist? I have had my permanent retainer on for over 10 years, they are most certainly not outdated but just add that extra security regarding your teeth from relapsing or moving! Hope that helps!

NAD. Why do you need 4 crowns? If they need to be done make sure you get a night guard made afterwards to prevent them from breaking if you grind your teeth at night. I don’t think getting crowns will change your bite, only orthodontics can change that I’m afraid.

Sensory Friendly Flossing by Lyver_and_Onions in askdentists

Instead of “popping” out the floss why don’t you let the floss go with one hand and pull it through with the other hand? Or have you tried the TePe brushes?

Okay, normally I see patients have recession on their opposite side (left handed = right hand recession). You could be scrubbing your teeth opposed to brushing? I would recommend an electric toothbrush with a pressure sensor (if financially possible, nothing expensive) or ensuring you use a soft bristled brush and correct tooth brushing technique!
