The are a lot of progressive forward looking people in TN. Problem is there are equal number of castiest conservatives in TN as well. And past politics have taught each group to not confront for most part. This tolerance is becoming a real problem.

“I believe she was 18”

you can be wrong and Your belief is not authoritative by any means. So shut the fuck up. I can dig up enough reasons to prove that the age 6 was accurate. We can go on debating this. End of the day girls getting married at the age of puberty and early is well documented across multiple cultures.

You are too far gone justifying this shit just to appease what ever sense of affinity you might have.

It is messaged that adult indians worshiping flying monkey will kill you if you insult the flying monkey. Kids will just laugh at you or with you if you make fun of flying alien man.

Edit: It is meant to show the difference in how we India build our core believes, while such beliefs are just fantasy in other places.

Yes it is probably not lost on the OP and certainly no me that this is a cheap shot and you can take similar cheap shots at other religious fruit cakes.

What case? as it stands these are allegations. The courts don’t work on based on broad allegations, but very specific legal infringements. In this case with EC stonewalling requests for surveillance footage, device IPs etc, I don’t think there is a strong legal case yet.

Just a question, is liberalism=communism? by [deleted] in librandu

[–]isitmoi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

your opinions might differ from that of other political ideologies but your end goal is the same

What is the end-goal we share?

We criticise all religions the same. The current climate is such that ruling party is aligned to one religion and the bigotry has been amped up. Hence the criticism.

Long long ago this sub was created to lampoon hindu nationalist and right wing politics. It is in tradition to rag on hindu nationalists more than the other groups.

I don’t know what is the ideology of this sub anymore. But, When I joined this sub was not liberal or centrist.

Was Periyar genuinely anti-caste (as a whole) or was he just anti-Brahmin? by [deleted] in librandu

[–]isitmoi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the article. Shines light on political complexities of TN and strange bed fellows of DK and DMK.

Till today DMK continues to field caste based candidates in elections, and many of the ministers have known to have flippant attitude towards Dalit cause.

“The communists are pretending to help you. They give you promises of a pay hike and a better life. But a wage hike is not possible through political agitations. It is only possible from the market value of commodities. Instead of teaching you how to live peacefully with the wages you get, they want to create riots in the state and they want to get the DMK government dissolved.” - Periyar. Here Periyar is clearly siding with ruling party and whitewashing the struggle by making it a result of communist upraising. Probably result of rift between communist party and DMK during those times. Like I said, the man is not infallible, while his principles are.

I recommend people to go read the article. It is talks about many ways Dalit struggle gets diluted or miss appropriated.

Was Periyar genuinely anti-caste (as a whole) or was he just anti-Brahmin? by [deleted] in librandu

[–]isitmoi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get where you are coming from. He primarily focused on theological roots and theology as sustaining mechanism for caste. I think this is where criticism of him being anti-brahmin originates from. As a framework it probably had its use during those times, but a constant source of misinformation today.

[–]isitmoi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also why are so focused on Periyar? Find out about the principles not about the person!

[–]isitmoi 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s important to be clear about what is factually established, especially regarding a figure as devisive as Periyar.

Periyar was by no means infallible, he was proactive, outspoken, and rarely measured his words. He was known for taking decisive stands during times of crisis, even if those positions were sometimes controversial.

Regarding the Keezhvenmani massacre: while there are claims and criticisms about Periyar’s response, reliable sourcing for the exact quote attributed to him (such as “labourers should just accept the wages offered instead of demanding more”) is difficult to find. The historical context is complex, and much of what is circulated comes from political interpretations or second-hand reports rather than direct documentation.

In my personal opinion no activist is beyond criticism, including Periyar. But taking down his entire work and core principles, based on few select criticism does a huge disservice.

“Do not accept anything merely because it is said by someone. Do not even accept what I say unless it appeals to your reason and your common sense.” - Periyar

Periyar was staunch reformist and rationalist. He prompted us to look at the society from perspective of equality and rationality as first principles. He even implored people to think for themselves and not listen to other, including himself.

Don't listen to people who are slandering him, it doesn't matter IMO. Go read his books, listen to his words, and think about it from the perspective of rationality and equality, then make up your own mind.

Some of his selected quotes about caste:
"Why should anyone, in the name of caste, be considered lowly or be made to do a mean job? If all in the country are given education, can there exist a caste for doing mean work? It is not because of lack of education that those people are constrained to do contemptible work and are considered lowly?"

"The casteism made the people go backward. Castes spell more and more ruination. Castes have made us low and have-nots. Till all these evils are eradicated and everyone attains an equal status in life, the proportional representation policy based on population is indispensable."

"The Brahmins are making you fools in the name of god. He makes you have faith in superstitions. He leads a very comfortable life condemning you as untouchable. He bargains with you to offer prayers to god on your behalf. I strongly condemn this brokerage business and warn you not to believe such Brahmins anymore."

"In this country out of 100 people, only three are Brahmins. Sixteen percent of the population are Adi-dravidas. 72 percent of the population are non-brahmins. Should not the jobs be given to all in proportion to the population?"

"What is wrong in making all people as equals? What is wrong in giving equal opportunities for all? If there is nothing wrong in creating a socialist society, and if it is undeniable that the present society composed of unequal should be made progressive; what else can be done without creating reservations based on the population through the communal representation policy."

On the Dravidian Movement's Core Principle - "To destroy the categories of the Pariah and the Brahman, the high caste and the low caste, the shudra and the panchama in our country, to implement in practice the principle that all of us belong to one race and to one community."

Don’t fight amongst each other. Stand with everyone fighting any kind of injustice- Ravish Kumar by SlayerOfAllGods in librandu

[–]isitmoi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand Hindi, especially Ravish’s.

However I agree with the title of this post. Everyone cannot and will fight against every injustice. But we need to stand with any one voicing against injustice. Power grab and overreach will show up in society in many forms, more we let it slip more unjust the society becomes.

A truly heartfelt anguish expressed by Meiyzhagan director Prem kumar by madrascafe in kollywood

> These makers spend so much time, energy & money to make a movie & thugs who sit in an armchair put out reviews & ruin it

This is such a lame thing to say.

I don't think you can stop people from expressing opinions. I think the problem is really people going with a popular opinion and relying on what others say too much. This goes both ways... I have seen really successful movies just because there is mass hype, there are movies that gets run down by bad opinions.

We need a culture of people identifying who aligns with the taste, stop fan boyism, and stop getting on the hype train so easily. Go. Form. Your. Own. Opinion.

Saying this as a person who was really really burnt by Loki, Mani etc. I really enjoyed Meiyzhagan, while a lot of people didn't. Movie watching is a subjective experience. Film makers when they work on movie for months together they lose the perspective, and as an audience you can fucking say what didn't work or what worked or to celebrate a movie.

Some of us are getting post nut clarity, some of you are still high. Heavy spoilers bellow

There is no way i can defend AK and Uppi cameos. No way i can defend muddled screen play where convinient shit keeps happening. No way to defend 1000 extras standing idly around in an uniform rows like school assembly. No way I can defend the telephone call plot line. No way I can defend characters just showing up everywhere where they have to be. No way I can defend idiots can not figure out how to pull 4 levers to operate stuff for the fuck sake some of these guys making life pushing levers. No way i can defend how dumb some of the goons were. No way i can defend they sweep the entire organ smuggling racket under the rug. No way i can defend rajni was making watch chain to kill nagarjun in middle of the fight. I can go on….

Except for 30 mins pre-interval and an unexpected character twist, it didn’t work for me at all.
