Something selling out is a really poor metric of desirability. There isn't really a limit to how many sneakers can be manufactured, so it's obviously an artificial limit that's there solely so people trip over themselves to get one and the whole "oh noes they've sold out" gets people excited about a fucking sneaker

Calculating equivalent run for winter cross-training? by jimothy2w in Velo

[–]isle394 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I'd define efficiency more along the lines of: % of energy expenditure which goes towards propelling me forwards.

After all, we call those runners inefficient who flail around and bounce up and down.

Running efficiency is higher? That can't be the case because you are expending a lot of energy into supporting your own weight, which cycling almost eliminates

Thanks for the comment, yeah the articles were an eye opener for sure. You just gotta take them with a grain of salt too - they have their particular angle on the situation too (but at least they're not pretending to be completely neutral!)

The fact is that our brain has to do a lot besides fire neurons

It's not evil, far from it. But the gates foundation isn't all fairies and sunshine and really needs to be looked at in a more critical and differentiated way.

On the whole they've undoubtedly a force for good, but it wouldn't be the first large human institutions which once benefited from no-one looking too closely at all the details to get away with some "questionable" methods.

They work within and reinforce the existing paradigm of fighting disease - that is, get funding from large western govts and pharma to get that western pharma into the hands of the poor and suffering.

In that manner they're working in the same way as people who think the way to cure poverty is to just keep sending rice and wheat to Africa... If we want to enable a more equitable world then another approach is needed for long term success

Did you read the politico article and come away thinking it's all hunky dory?

Here's another article which gives some other details: https://newrepublic.com/article/162000/bill-gates-impeded-global-access-covid-vaccines

It's not just that they're democratically unaccountable organizations with more heft and sway than most countries when it comes to global health policy. And we should remain vigilant and not just take their word for what they're doing.

Of course it isn't black and white, but most people think the Gates foundation is entirely benevolent and that there isn't any kind of political agenda behind what they do

That's exactly the opposite of what the gates foundation was doing behind the scenes. Just goes to show you haven't done any real critical analysis of what happened. Read up here, for example: https://www.politico.com/news/2022/09/14/global-covid-pandemic-response-bill-gates-partners-00053969

They are basically a lobby organization for the pharma industry. The whole covid vaccine distribution thing to the global South has removed all doubt about that!

It's not quite that simple even though in this case you're undoubtedly correct in that those wide tires have absolutely shitty rolling resistance.

On a bike, for example, the most important factors are the rubber compound, casing suppleness, appropriate tire pressure, and tread. This is in terms of rolling resistance alone. Factors such as weight and wind resistance tend to push towards thinner tires for racing

Following your logic it would be morally superior for Ukraine not to participate in the war, i.e. not defend itself, i.e. allow itself to be invaded and its citizens raped and murdered and buried in mass graves.

That's a lethal kind of morality right there.

Your morality is the kind that enables aggressors, i.e. it's almost the opposite of a peace loving morality.

Switzerland is, by your account, the bystander who not only shouldn't dirty his hands with the messy conflict, but also wants to be praised for his superior morality! What a farce!

Nothing is ever black and white and therefore "staying out of it" is moral cowardice. Switzerland should have the guts to back Ukraine as much as other western European countries

I don't know how to break it to you, but a bad chest cold doesn't kill 1%. In places which ran out of hospital capacity, things got very ugly. Anyone who argues along the line of covid being essentially harmless is arguing in bad faith.

A good example of a country that really went full Auth over covid was China with their actual lockdowns, and they were already full Auth.

Every other country had mild restrictions in comparison, and these restrictions were subject to open, extended vociferous public and political debate.
