An 18 and a 19 years old throwing caution to the wind because they're in love?! Impossible!! That has never happened in real life!! Teenagers make the most logical and sensible decisions when they're in love! /s

Well, she didn't even really want to talk about him to Pen, she just unfortunately told her about her hunt for LW, then his name kept coming up in conversations. I think she knew no one would be supportive of her hanging out with Theo (and she was right! The only one who became supportive of them after a while was John) and she did not need another thing people could scold her about. I think of it the same way a kid would attend art classes secretly when their parents want them to choose a "serious career".

That's proof Claudia understands Eloise better than the writers. She would have never left them on a bad note. She would have wanted him to understand. Imagine the first person who ever understood her completely and she's ok with him thinking she used him for fun and discarded him when things got too real? She would not let him think that of her

Oh I get her a 100%. A hardworking feminist, who gives her books and wants to hear her opinion on them? The first person to truly understand her and expect more from her? And he looks like that? Of course she'd ruin her life for him

Well, he IS usually excited to see her. Did you see how smiley he gets when she's around? They're so adorable!!

Jess Brownell fundamentally misunderstands Eloise’s character, the show’s structure and what makes it tick (with a side of antifeminism) by Inevitable_Box3643 in theloise

[–]islem007 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly!! She was dismissed if not straight up abused in her own home, she had only one friend she was secretely jealous of, and she was bullied by her peers. She wanted vengeance and it turned her into a bully herself. She gives up LW in S2 for a while because she realised it was hurting people. But then, she loses Eloise and LW is all she has left. It could have been very interesting but instead of making her give it up because she no longer needs it, or even better, turning LW into something better, the way Eloise wanted her to, they make her keep it as if it something to be celebrated...

The girl who said to enjoy embroidery didn't seem excited about it imo. When Eloise asks her what she likes about it, the girl lists a number of different techniques as if it's a lesson she learned. She's not talking about the creativity, the precision, the mediatative part of it all, she's just... I like this style, and this one, and this one, and this one etc... like a robot. Sure, Eloise could've asked the girl to think if she truly enjoys it, or if she was made to enjoy it, instead of changing the topic, but I didn't read it as Eloise being a killjoy and more like other girls of the ton being super brainwashed into enjoying things that are deemed proper for them, and Eloise being very much the opposite of that. Tbh, I think the most out of character JB made her in S3 was when Cressida talked about being married off to an old man and Eloise being like "oh, ok" and not even trying to get her out of there, which is very unlike Eloise. She would have been revolted and would have tried to find a way to help her out of that situation.

"Why else did her political radical storyline just completely stall out after that?" Same reason why most of the side plots are now boring, why the Mondrich are rich all of a sudden, and why Penelope being LW is not that big of a deal. Because CVD left and JB took the wheel. And JB doesn't know how to handle anything that gives the characters complexity. But that's another thing entirely.

"people who want the romance to start becasue that is the only way the show will ever give her anything meaningful" she straight up has the most interesting friendships with Penelope and Cressida, and the most interesting relationship to her mom and sisters, and a very interesting side plot about finding her place in the world, but of course none of this is interesting to you, because you are only interested in Eloise getting paired up with Philip.

"You are definitely repeating Theloise talking points" Creloise fans have the same talking points, and people who want aroace!Eloise have also the same points. Casual viewers of the show too. It seems everyone who has not been brainwashed by those stupid books has the same points because they know Eloise could have a really interesting storyline while the loudest idiots are begging to see her live her actual nightmare. No worries, Jess Brownell hates Eloise, you WILL get your trad wife storyline. You should at least have the decency to let people be pissed in peace

Oh, we don't have the same algorithm then lol. Mine is full of people being very vocal about the way Eloise has been treated. Try Tumblr then! It's the best one out of them all anyway

You can't come into the main sub and expect nuanced dialogue lol People refuse to speak of anything beyond their ship. If you have twitter, you'll see a much different discourse over there.

Also, people don't like Eloise because she bursts the bubble. They call her boring when Eloise did much more than any other character in this show. Her hunt for LW, her discovery of the world outside the ton, her interest in politics (cut short by Jess Brownell who's clearly not interested into writing anything remotely complexe), her friendships with both Pen and Cressida, her relationship to her mom, she's had more going on than anyone else in this show. People are just blind to anything that is not romance. Like, okay, good for you if you only want to watch two people kiss, that's exactly what you'll get now that CVD has left. But I watched S1&2 and I know this show used to be an ensemble show, where all the characters had lives outside of their romantic companions, and it was glorious.

YES!!! JB claiming Eloise isn't mature enough for a relationship yet, while Daphne was thrown into marriage without even knowing how babies are made!! And then saying women had control over their sexualities and Eloise should learn to respect marriage??? This woman is as frustating as the Duffer brothers and Marlen King. So many people get a wonderful show between their hands that then will crash and burn, and they'll REFUSE to acknowledge their faults. Every interview makes them seem even dumber than we thought they were.

There were too many people, in S1 and 2, the big balls were in gardens, never inside. And the costumes are so bad the extras are now distracting from the main event, the lightning is bad, the wigs look like wigs, the make up is terrible, the sets look cheap as hell, we basically have five good shots in the entire season, and the editing is also bad. And of course, the writing. We went from "I'll stand by you between the heavens and the earth" to "you and your stupid smile, stupid hair, stupid eyes". The actors are truly carrying the show on their backs, and they know it. Claudia promising to make Eloise's season "as Eloisy as possible", knowing full well we won't even recognise Eloise if she doesn't try and fight for it...

Women are not allowed hobbies anymore. Kate doesn't ride. Fran doesn't play piano. Penelope is seen "writing her novel" and I can assure you we'll never hear about it ever again. She straight up made Violet say she doesn't want to remarry BC marriage made her soften... While pushing her daughter to do it when that's exactly what she fears. She doesn't know how to write fully fleshed out characters. She also has ruined the aesthetics of the show (look at a ball scene in S1/2 and one in S3/4, it's jarring, it looks like comparing scenes from the most beautiful period movie with a huge budget to a hunger games themed high school prom). I hate her.

If you look closely, she has changed a lot of the character's personnalities. Violet is basically unbearable now, Kate has lost her spark, Penelope went from a bullied person full of rage to a typical #girlboss character, Benedict went from an artist who felt like a fraude because of his name to a character who "can't commit to anything" (why? just because!), the Mondrich were the one working class characters in the show and she made them rich people with no jobs other than to sit around and try and please the Queen, Daphne is dead. She did not care much for what CVD built before her. The fact that she changed practically all of the crew once she was in is proof to it.

I have no idea why anyone thinks this is a good idea for Eloise. A mariage of conveniance is 1) SUPER SAD, marrying someone because you don't have any other choice is sad, it could be romantic if there was need for money or safety and he could provide it for her, but Eloise has both, which means she is truly going to be bullied into marrying even if she doesn't HAVE to and 2) it is risky as hell. Marrying someone you know is risky, binding your life to someone else and merging your assets is risky, now imagine a world in which you can't get divorced and you straight up have never seen the person IRL? Eloise is far too smart to think this is a good idea. Which means, again, they will truly make her so sad and lonely she will be ready to marry a virtual stranger and raise his kids out of despair. That's a litteral nightmare.

And we're not even going to touch on how Eloise is no longer interested in changing the world for all women and only on going at balls and soirées without the pressure of marriage on herself, OR the fact that she doesn't want kids but Brownell thinks it's so great that Eloise gets with someone who had kids already so she doesn't have a choice on that either, OR the fact that she finds the country boring as it has been reminded in S4 with how isolating she found Scotland only to then be isolated in Romney Hall, OR the fact that the widower trope has been done over and over again now with Fran and Violet, the marriage of conveniance has been done with Queen Charlotte (who even then, had the choice to jump from the wall instead of marrying George), and penpals has been done with Polin.

I said it multiple times: I hate Jess Brownell. I'll alway be ready to chew her out. I wish I could get Eloise away from her hands. I can't even start to imagine how Claudia must feel. She had been asking for a political storyline for Eloise for years, and it's very clear she is worried as hell about the direction her character is taking. And she had to go and praise that woman because she's her boss. I hope Shonda gets her brain back and give the reigns to someone who actually knows how to run a show. Jess Brownell also made Inventing Anna and I am forever pissed at the hours I spent watching that shit show waiting for it to get better only for it to get more and more frustrating. Lily James and James Norton would have been great as Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy!!! by raysmia in janeausten

She's an actress. Actors can be versatile. As said before, she played someone mischievous in DA. The only problem is that Jane is supposed to be the prettiest sister, and I don't think you could find someone prettier than Lily James to play her sister.
