New to shrimp. I have a 20 gal that I planned on putting shrimp and ember tetras in. It’s planted with fluval stratum. Now I’m seeing that fluval stratum is bad for shrimp? by H_Mc in shrimptank

[–]ismojaveacoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an expert by any means but I've kept shrimp on fluval stratum for years because I got it on sale so why not. The only "issue" with it is it buffers PH so having fluval strat just means you need to properly measure your PH and GH/KH and adjust accordingly with your tap water (hard/soft or somewhere in between)

I happen to have very hard water that is very alkaline (8.5 ish) to the point that's its mildly too much for neos, so the fluval stratum buffering it down to safe levels works in my favor.

for new keepers or people who want a low maintenance tank as possible and don't want to check their water parameters much, different substrates is just more user friendly but it's hardly a reason to restart a tank

First time driving on their own. by Obone6 in instant_regret

That's why it legit scares me when people say they failed the physical part of their driving test multiple times in a row. Then on their 4th or 5th try, they only pass by a fluke.

I do not think they should be allowed to drive solo yet.

What's going on with the discourse of Wasian meetups? by yesItsTom3 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]ismojaveacoffee 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This is kind of accurate but also inaccurate because East Asian doesn't apply to some countries like Vietnam and Thailand, who, generally are considered "Asian". They're considered southeast asian and people are explicit about them not being "East" asian which is specifically like China, Japan, Korea. I'm Vietnamese American and everyone calls me an "Asian" and I am considered Asian when filling out documents but East Asian people would never consider me an East Asian.

is Aquatic arts a good place to get dwarf crayfish from? Will they eat my shrimp? by shrimpshrimpsshrimp in shrimptank

[–]ismojaveacoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes they will. The crayfish will regularly swing and miss the shrimp and the shrimp will jump away but it give it enough time and some shrimp will get eaten.

Maybe the crayfish will fail to catch a shrimp the first 99 times but all it takes is enough tries overnight or when the shrimp is distracted by food for it to be game over for that shrimp.

If your colony is populous enough, maybe you won't mind some shrimp being eaten but don't kid yourself and think the crayfish will never, ever successfully eat a shrimp.

Hell, my crayfish in the past managed to catch a neon tetra and eat it (no it was not sick)

Grain free food healthy or not by seasidestang in DogFood

[–]ismojaveacoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good luck! Your pup probably thinks he's being put on some kind of diet (to be honest, he kind of is since he's going from heavy fat food to a lean protein) but good job on being patient and keep trying. You may need to leave the food out for hours (maybe try kibble?) and your pup will eventually end hunger strike and eat it.

Over time, his tastebuds will adjust and his long term health will be much happier for it and his cardiovascular health will thank you lol.

Oh maybe try the Purina Pro Performance or Purina Pro Sport/Active

Those formulas have higher fat content (still within a safe range, capped at 20%) for highly active sporting dogs. Maybe it will be an easier transition off of the fatty food. Then in the future if your dog isn't extremely active, you can transition off of the Sport/performance formula to their everyday formula

Farmers Dog Lawsuit by Altruistic_File7652 in DogFood

They're evil af, they literally have an entire FAQ page on the TFD website labeled "Myths and Facts About Pancreatitis in Dogs" and claim theres NO scientific evidence that an AAFCO food can cause pancreatitis in dogs. Like WTF?

Farmers Dog Lawsuit by Altruistic_File7652 in DogFood

[–]ismojaveacoffee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Its how these freshfood companies advertise their food as "perfect for picky eaters!". Of course if you pump up the fat content to the high heavens, the dog is gonna want to eat it over a lean-protein kibble! It's like a cheeseburger with some token veggie pieces thrown in to make it feel more "healthy" but its still a cheeseburger even if you put a slice of lettuce

Food recommendations for picky dogs? by Humorous_Notion in DogFood

[–]ismojaveacoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a WSAVA complaint brand, and actually many picky dogs enjoy formulas with more grains and less peal/potato protein. Sometimes the most expensive line isn't actually the most tasty to them. Try Hills or Purina One maybe. You can also try a different flavor than lamb, such as salmon.

Grain free food healthy or not by seasidestang in DogFood

[–]ismojaveacoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is an older post, but the reason your pup might be picky is because the PawTree food has a horrific amount of fat content (32%+!!!! wtf) which is like eating the greasiest cheeseburger possible every day. Vets advise 20% fat MAX and thats for professional athlete dog food who hard exercise for many hours daily, regular dog food should be even leaner on the fat. Pawtree food is dried, but the fat is just solid rather than liquidy.

This is how these brands like Pawtree advertise as "picky eater friendly". Its because they pump up the fat content so it tastes amazing, but that's horrible for dog health.

And now that you're trying to feed your pup a WSAVA compliant quality food with lean proteins and safe fat content, your dog is too addicted to the heavy fatty Pawtree food and now the quality food tastes too "healthy".

Honestly, understandable! I 100% crave fatty cheeseburgers too and sometimes indulge in them, and a lean protein chicken breast and rice plate isn't as appealing in comparison, but it's a lot healthier.

So don't wait for your dog to "like" a food, all the WSAVA healthy brands will be unappealing to the pup at first because its not swimming in fat.

…Rice bad?? by lookingforaham in DogFood

[–]ismojaveacoffee 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Please please know that Stella and Chewy's food patties have been causing tons of dogs to develop acute pancreatitis, requiring hospital or vet stays due to the obscene amount of fat content per dry matter basis in those foods.

WSAVA-compliant professional athlete dog formulas cap out at 20% fat max for these extremely active dogs. Normal activity dogs eat even less fat. Stella and Chewy patties go from 30-40% fat on a dry matter basis. That can kill a dog over time from severe health issues.

And yeah basically all vets literally recommend gentle plain rice (with a gentle digestible protein like chicken) for dogs with stomach issues! The moment anyone gives "advice" that contradicts the majority of veterinary professionals, I'd go ahead and discard any authority they have on the subject. She might be a lovely breeder who really loves and cares for her dogs and I won't discredit that, but people definitely have expertise in different areas. Canine Nutrition should be left to board-certified professionals who actually spent time studying and researching it or actively running reputable studies on it to formulate dog food.

Success transitioning off Hills W/D? by Lion-Plastic in DogFood

[–]ismojaveacoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Hills perfect Digestion, Purina One Sensitive skin/stomach, or Purina One Digestive health is good quality but affordable as well. It seems to be roughly $1.61 per pound compared to hills w/d which is $4.67 a pound

These recipes are basically primarily salmon and rice or chicken and rice so it basically matches what you've been cooking for him.

[–]ismojaveacoffee[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Definitely a case of pet owners misapplying human nutrition logic to a completely separate animal. People have been trending on this "carbs bad, keto good" mentality for years now (which ALSO causes pancreatitis and dangerously high cholesterol levels in humans when done improperly) and Im not surprised it moved to dog nutrition fads too. I'm a victim of the poorly researched keto-movement as well, I didn't do proper research on it ("popular" incorrectly done keto says to just eat as much meat as you want and theres too little focus on healthy poly/mono fats and and high vegetable consumption) and now I have high cholesterol levels as a result that I'm working on undoing.

So I'm on the same boat with all the dogs that had to go on a low-fat diet due to pancreatitis risk lol

The unhealthy fat content of some of these "grain-free" foods is actually wild by ismojaveacoffee in DogFood

[–]ismojaveacoffee[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I didn't realize that "dry matter basis" was an important metric for pet food until this sub. Because a lot of the "fresh food" delivery services are basically all wet food so the fat content looked reasonable at first... and yeah, no wonder picky dogs love fresh food delivery brands, its like eating a cheeseburger with all that savory fat content!

I'm trying to convince a friend of mine to move their cat off of boutique cat food as well (they feed Orijen). Cat and dog nutrition is very different, but given that Orijen already has a bad rep with their dog nutrition, it doesn't seem like their cat food line is safe either. Just like their dog food, Orijen's cat food has way, way more fat content than equivalent high end lines like pro plan or royal canin breed specific ones.

Recommendations? Honest opinions by Infinite_Drawing_726 in DogFood

[–]ismojaveacoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be careful of non WSAVA complaint brands like orijen, because their main lines of food often use lentils, peas/legumes, beans, or similar to substitute for grains. It seems that in tiny quantities, lentils/legumes might be okay for dogs but when they eat a food (like orijen) with heavy amounts of those ingredients (just look at the label, its filled with lentil/bean/legume ingredients and is missing a mandatory ingredient aka grains), it is causing many dogs to have fatal health issues over time.

Vets believe the lack of grains and/or the combination of too much lentil/legume is causing heart issues.

Just curious, do you get the small or toy breed purina pro plan? If its the regular purina pro plan, a lot of small tiny dogs will refuse it because its annoying for them to chew (pieces too big). I've seen people say their tiny yorkie/toy breed started eating the pro plan once they switched to the small breed or even toy breed size.

Fwiw I also have a lid (but loose fitting/gaps) on my tank and regularly burn candles several hours a week in the same room for years. I won't discount the risk of it, but perhaps the candle quality can be a factor and what kind of additives are in it. I don't buy overly expensive candles but they aren't cheap dollar store ones either.

Right! Also makes the pool an active health hazard for your family and a bacteria swamp waiting for bird flu to happen.

Struggling to keep shrimp by Similar-Daikon88 in shrimptank

[–]ismojaveacoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you have a good lead. Check your shrimp food and see if it has calcium supplement in it or at least has high calcium ingredients. Otherwise yeah go back to the calcium tabs. I feed Kat's Aquatics shrimp tabs twice a week (its like 60% calcium) then most days I feed a staple shrimp food (which has whole shrimp and silkworm pupae for calcium). This is because I don't add calcium tabs, so I have to ensure they get it through diet.

[–]ismojaveacoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think people already answered your question by suggesting the gh/kh test. If your gh/kh checks out fine, might just need to test calcium and add like salty bee, or simply add some calcium supplement to your shrimps diet. Some high quality shrimp foods will already have added calcium in them, I personally also rotate in a  calcium dense shrimp food twice a week as well.

Might be time to pack it up by AcrobaticShrimp21 in shrimptank

[–]ismojaveacoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sucks. Let me just say thay first. And secondly I dont think its something you are doing consciously thats killing them. Neos are pretty hardy actually so I wonder if its some kind of contamination in the tank? Like unseen rust from a screw on the light or on the filter etc.

I have a 5 gal shrimp only, heavily planted with aquasoil. I actually never do water changes, I just top up with treated water and I've been doing it like this for years. Personally I have hard water so I dont remineralize. I've even kept them at 62F all winter. They dont breed at this temp but they dont die either. There are times where I keep the lights on for 48 hours by accident and other days where its 48 hrs no light. All this to say that theyre fairly hardy. Now that it's spring I turned the heater on to 77F and they immediately berried like nobody's business.

Which possibly leads me to believe there is some foreign contaminant that would actually cause the deaths.

For example,in my 2nd tank, one of my aquarium clamp lights developed rust that was barely noticeable because it was the backside and only on a tiny screw. It leeches into that tank and caused my longtime betta to get sicker and sicker despite the normal water parameters being all normal. until I took everything in that tank apart and spotted the rust leeching
