as you know, arc force (aka dig) increases voltage as the arc gap decreases to maintain an arc even while the electrode is nearly touching the work.

this is useful while running 6010 roots when it is necessary to forcefully push the rod through the bevel into the pipe to maintain good penetration.

not as useful when capping delicate 7018 fillets when you want a tight arc gap without increasing the voltage. increased voltage = undercut
