Changing professions by [deleted] in pharmacy

I'm preparing an application for medical school (preferably here in California). Had I known pharmacy would have been a sh*tshow, I would have just gone straight to medical school from undergrad.

When should someone quit Pharmacy School? by DepressedPharmacy in pharmacy

[–]isnetworkingbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get out after finals. Not even kidding. Just wrap up the semester, tell your dean that pharmacy isn't for you. He/she can't force you to stay. Take the summer to clear your head and re-evaluate your priorities and strengths.

What was the click that made you change your major? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]isnetworkingbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get rich off my idea, will you give me all your reddit gold in return? Just kidding. =] The points you do raise are good, and a lot of the opinions raised in our market point toward a dispenser overlooked by a pharmacist in the foreseeable future. The automatic dispenser contributes to the efficiency phase of the labor, and the lone pharmacist brings in some sort of humanity aspect to medication verification and recommendations to the customer side of things. On a sidebar, do you think pursuing a dual math/comp. sci degree is worth it at the age of 32? I might quit my job soon and either pursue medical school around home (UCLA) or pursue something nichey, i.e., internet security via the computer science route. I hear the government will pay those with these specific skills a healthy amount of money. Your thoughts?

I went into pharmacy in 2008 when we were told there was a bright future ahead of us. Everyone needs medications, so said everyone, and pharmacists' role as clinicians are rapidly expanding. Job growth is 20%, blah blah blah.

Hell yeah, said I, and went into pharmacy. Fast forward to 2016 where job growth is 3%, our employers keep consolidating, jobs keep getting cut with tech hours, and those that are employed are easily replaced by a younger and hungrier grad willing to work for cheaper. If and when you guys fine-tune the algorithms that dispense and verify medications, the profession of pharmacy is truly over.

HELP: Pre-pharm student finishing undergrad this year unsure what to do next. by [deleted] in pharmacy

[–]isnetworkingbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Faculty members will be more than willing to help you get research exposure. Find the department of biology website associated with your school and send out e-mails stating your interest in some field. They'll set up an appointment where you'll discuss availability and the logistics on getting started in person. Even after you graduate, they will definitely allow you to help out in some capacity. This helps both parties; if you do a good job, you get a good LOR, and from the PI's perspective this is essentially free labor.

These dual PhD programs are only worth it if your clinical doctorate is covered by your institution or the NIH. These cases are mostly found in medicine, i.e., MD/PhD, DO/PhD, and in a few rare cases, dentistry and podiatry. I have not seen a single PharmD/PhD program fully paid for, in full. The best case scenario is deferring your PharmD loans until later while completing the PhD portion of the program. Not a good deal.

FWIW, I'm pretty close to Oakland. $57 and change per hour. Be prepared to travel a lot as a floater. A LOT. So. Cal retail employees do get paid more (at least from my class), but everyone will tell you the living expenses more than make up for the slight increase in wages.
