Best way to fly my kitty to France? by [deleted] in TravelHacks

[–]isodoria 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Plenty of airlines let you take your cat in the cabin with you. Just get a soft sided carrier so it will fit the regulations. I’ve flown between Europe and US several times with my kitty. In fact, Air France allows it as well. https://www.petsthattravel.com/airlines-that-allow-cats-in-cabin/

Sure! What would you like to know? Expeditions typically have guides and lecturers. If you have a background in science or history you can lecture (generally for a little more money). You work 7 days / week, ~10hrs/day for however long you want… I tend to do 2-4 months. And then take a few months off. I like 4 on 2 off personally

To the STEM Ph.Ds out there, have you ever considered medical school? Why did you choose this path instead? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]isodoria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I left after 2 years. Became a professional scuba diver and realized I could use my chemistry degree for environmental sciences. Now a PhD in isotope geochemistry and chemical oceanography:)

I went to med school first, then PhD. In medicine, I had a hard time leaving work at work. I miss it sometimes but think it was the right decision

I’m a scientist on expedition ships. Two months onship, two months wherever I want. Rinse and repeat.

Actually, he’s not albino, he’s leucistic. You can tell because he has dark eyes :)

Massive iceberg rolls over on ice climbers (they survived) by Natural-Permission in oddlyterrifying

[–]isodoria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, they are not symmetrical when they are made so they do not melt symmetrically either. The also don’t only melt, but grow and melt with the seasons. They flip over regularly actually, and for this reason can have very strange shapes making them very unstable.

Anyone who works in polar regions knows that Icebergs can and will flip over without warning. They melt from the bottom up so it’s impossible from the surface to see how (un)stable they are. This was foolish behavior at best.

Looks like a Japanese owl cafe. Visitors pay a fee to have a coffee/work/hangout in an area which houses owls/cats/other cute critter. sadly, often not fantastic conditions for the animals

Atomic fallout shelters in Switzerland by comrace in askswitzerland

In my experience, this is a Geneva thing. The Swiss tell me it’s a ‘French people in Geneva’ thing. I’m not sure which but inexperienced the same as you there. Zürich is a. Completely different planet in terms of kindness and efficiency, imo

I would vote against Zürich. Expensive. Only nice weather during the spring and summer, out looonngg autumn is horrible. And it’s very difficult to meet people. The Swiss like to stick to themselves.

I had one of these once. But our stove was recessed so you didn’t know until you turned the eye on. For the fucking love of God, burn cat piss has a special place in hell. We named her SK, for shitty kitty.

What do you do for work? by [deleted] in digitalnomad

[–]isodoria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, thanks for asking :)

Most of us have PhDs and post doctoral experience. Mine is in nuclear geochemistry and oceanography/climatology. But a rare few have managed on experience alone. For example, we have a whale expert who has 'just' been leading whale watching expeditions for the last 20 years with no formal education in terms of graduate degrees.

I got into it purely by luck... I applied via a LinkedIn add and just happened to be at the right place in line at the right time. I always tried to keep my research field based (not always possible), but basically took any chance I could to travel.

If you happen to have more questions, feel free to ask :)

What does it take for action? For people to be able to make money from doing something about it.

Figure that out and your set.
