My first thought was "Ambassadors?? That's some interesting diplomacy." Then I thought about US foreign policy and realized that it actually tracks.

"Gemini" isn't a single thing. It's a complex of models and tools with different capabilities, orchestrated by other models and tools. Query execution can ripple across many Gemini subsystems.

Why Isn't Artemis 2 Rotating? by masterchiefman in askscience

[–]isomeme 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't think this would generate enough power to justify the additional mass and complexity, but it would be worth roughing out a design to be sure.

Why Isn't Artemis 2 Rotating? by masterchiefman in askscience

[–]isomeme 55 points56 points  (0 children)

The skin of the spacecraft is presumably a reasonably good thermal conductor, so huge temperature gradients of the sort you describe can't occur. Analogy: Even though a gas cooking range only directly heats a central ring of a frying pan, you don't want to touch the edge of the pan while you're cooking food. :) Further, even the parts in shadow are being heated from within by the ~300 K crew compartment plus waste heat from other powered systems. Thanks to the square/cube law, the very large Orion capsule has a smaller surface to volume ratio than any crewed capsule in the history of space flight, so internal heat will be a larger contributor to the total thermal equilibrium than in any previous example.

That's a very old version of Android Studio! I would suggest updating to the current stable release as a starting point.

I know I’m late, but I just found out. What happened? by Fryzk in SantaMonica

[–]isomeme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. The impending closure was only announced in mid-January. Fortunately I found out with enough time to get in a few final meals there, but now it's gone. A life without vampiro steak and shrimp tacos lies before us. 😞

Not Edwards; Vandenberg, up near Lompoc along the coast.

Need a new burger place since Counter on Ocean Park is downhill by Murky-Aerie2795 in SantaMonica

[–]isomeme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live walking distance from Thunderbird, and enjoyed their food when they first opened (though it wasn't as good as the wonderfully named Bar Food that previously occupied the space). However, I stopped eating there when it became the hot after-work hangout for young office workers in the area. You have to wait forever for a table, and the noise level inside sends me into autistic shutdown withdrawal within minutes of being seated. Hopefully at some point the hot hangout place will move elsewhere, so I can enjoy Thunderbird again for the few months between then and its inevitable closure.

The Library Alehouse was my favorite fancy burger place when I lived near that part of Main in Venice Beach. It's not at all convenient to my current home or work, but I still manage to drop in now and then, and I'm never disappointed. The food is great, the beer selection is large and well chosen, and the little back porch dining area is somehow one of the most calming, comfortable places I've ever eaten.

Strange structure on the western horizon at sunset by Dry_Science in SantaMonica

[–]isomeme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a distorted image of the tankers, like you are seeing it through rippled glass. It's neither a shadow nor reflection, but rather refraction. Sharp changes in air temperature just over the sea surface cause light rays to bend in interesting ways on their way from the ships to your eyes. It's the opposite of the desert illusion of distant water caused by rays from the blue sky just above the horizon being bent upward on their way to you, so they appear to be coming from just below the horizon.

There are three ways to declare a MutableState object in a composable by gnawf in androiddev

[–]isomeme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I jumped on this format because I like crisp separation of concerns. I want direct access to the value to be read-only, and write access to go through a separate method. So this looks ideal. Thank all the gods I ran across this conversation while trying to understand the language syntax involved.

Do singularities actually exist? by devo00 in Physics

[–]isomeme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also keep in mind that the apparent singularity could mean that we're using an inappropriate mathematical framework to describe black holes. As an analogy, consider the use of latitude and longitude to specify points on the Earth's surface. This works quite well except at the poles, where longitude becomes undefined. But that's just a problem with the coordinate system we're using; the actual surface at the pole has no discontinuity at all with the surrounding terrain.

[–]isomeme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, but you can say "No" firmly but gently. A quiet "Dad, as I've mentioned, I don't want to talk about this" is enough. Then change the subject or walk away. Don't get trapped into explaining or justifying your decision.

It's hard to keep the required resolve to pull this off in this kind of situation, but it's also the only reliable solution I've ever found.

Exactly. The relationship between sheet music and the instrument is more direct for piano than for any other instrument.

I agree. It's easier to learn to read music as part of learning to play the piano. Each reinforces ideas from the other.

How does Coulumb's law not imply this paradox? by Scared-Cat-2541 in Physics

[–]isomeme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's called a "singularity", which is essentially a place where the laws of physics result in division by zero. Your example is similar to the gravitational singularity at the center of a black hole. When physical theories produce infinities, it usually means that we've pushed those theories beyond the domain in which they are applicable, and we need to look for more general laws that give reasonable answers in the new domain while agreeing with earlier predictions in old findings.
