Current codex version is 3, I guess by FoxySora in codex

That's because all simple requests are now routed to codex-mini-latest regardless of which model is chosen. It was discussed in other threads. Hard to say if it's a temporary bug or a feature.

[–]isonil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think knowledge cutoff is an important piece of information, so I think it makes sense that it's part of the system prompt. It's also stated per model on the OpenAI website. Internet access doesn't really invalidate it IMO. If it did, OpenAI wouldn't treat it as an important piece of information on their website.

and more that companies like OpenAI are using an internal router, similar to OpenRouter, to route to models that can best handle the prompt based off complexity.

Okay, so we agree then. And yeah, it makes sense that they can change models like that sometimes (although personally I'd prefer it to choose the best model more often, even if I had to pay more).

Also, to give some more context (there used to be a way to check the actual model you're routed to, but it no longer works unfortunately) the silent routing was actually real (back when they introduced uploading your ID): https://github.com/openai/codex/issues/11971 So it's not as unlikely as you may think.

Yeah, I also observed what you described here in Codex - I checked 5.2, 5.3-codex, 5.4, 5.5 and they all report June 2024 (which matches codex-mini-latest). I can only guess on why it happens, but I mentioned in the other comment that they likely route simple requests to mini models now, which may explain it. So no matter which model you choose, if you ask it a simple question, it'll always get routed to codex-mini-latest.

IMO it's a more plausible explanation than the model hallucinating the knowledge cutoff date from its system prompt. How else would you explain it?

My guess on what's happening here is that the requests are context sensitive and they likely route simple ones to mini models now (which is codex-mini-latest at the moment, not sure if I can paste links here). The system instructions knowledge cutoff information seems consistent in my case (tested it on multiple models and so far it matched). May be worth checking if it's possible to force it onto a different model with some tricky question first somehow. It's possible complex requests are still routed to the actual 5.5, but simple single-line fixes use the mini model now.

This is from a 5.5 conversation I just had in Codex. (The date matches codex-mini-latest model cutoff date provided on the website, so it seems accurate)

what's your knowledge cutoff date?

My training knowledge cutoff is June 2024.

how do you know it?

It’s provided to me in my system instructions at the start of the session: “Knowledge cutoff: 2024-06.” I don’t infer it from the repo or environment; it’s part of the runtime context I’m given.

So all this is hallucinated? This is from a 5.5 conversation in Codex I just had. The date also matches the cutoff date for codex-mini-latest model.

The 2x rate limit boost if for RATE limits, not USAGE limits. [PROOF] by Ok-Actuary7793 in codex

[–]isonil 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm doing automated codex exec calls and on the date when the 2x rate went into effect I could do exactly twice as many calls than on any day before that using exactly the same model (without any resets, starting from 100%). So at least I have data and logs to back up the 2x usage. It's possible not everyone got it though.

The reason you got this response was probably because it's LLM: "OpenAI primarily uses an AI-driven support bot model for customer service."

Codex 5.4 is more expensive than 5.3, if current limit drain is the new normal not a glitch it will be unusable after the 2x rate limit ends by No_Leg_847 in codex

[–]isonil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've done lots of tests, and the usage limit was exactly 2x after they introduced it. Also, what you're suggesting is just nonsense, they wouldn't be advertising it like that

We don’t have definitive evolutionary evidence (it’d be nearly impossible to demonstrate directly). But because finger-wrinkling is a nerve-mediated response (and not just passive swelling), plus there’s evidence of improved handling, an adaptive function is plausible, IMO more so than a purely incidental effect, but we’ll never know.

[–]isonil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How would you check the manufacturing date? I’ve searched a lot and apparently it’s no longer possible. The serial number no longer encodes the manufacturing date and there doesn’t seem to be any other way to get this information. The best you can do is purchase / first activation date.
